I have a simple question, was there ever a time where the strongest decks in the meta were actually really fun decks, that didn't leave a bitter taste in your mouth. I am not exactly new to this game, but i have only joined in KaC, so i have no clue what the previous metas actually looked like. Now here is my problem. I want to play decks that win, but in a fun way, smorcing your enemy down is not what i enjoy. Two months ago i could always enjoy myself when climbing to rank5 with some funny deck, but now after the season i am at rank5 immedeatly, where ppl already tryhard and i have to play some overpowered tier1/2 deck to win. (currently i tried quest druid 50% winrate and divine shield paladin 44% winrate, so obviously there is no progress). I don't wanna play casual either before that suggestion comes.
so, how did previous meta's looked like: i'd like to hear good and bad meta's, what made them good and if there is hope for me to ever play what i really enjoy for competition.
The last time I enjoyed playing hearthstone and being successful was when dragon warrior was a thing. That is coincidentally the only time I've ever hit legend.
I think every patch has spawned a ton of "this is the worst meta ever" posts, people both have a short memory and are nostalgic for a past that never existed. People always find a reason why the best decks are unskilled and unfun and OP and push their decks out of the format. If you value playstyle above winning then it's unlikely you'll be excited to compete in any meta and fall victim to screaming for nerfs rather than adapting.
That said, early Journey to UnGoro was great because of the wide deck diversity, I loved pirate warrior mirror matches when Mean Streets first came out because there was no margin for error, and trying to play patron warrior well was fun when that deck was super busted. Hearthstone is fun and competitive and I can usually find a good deck that wins and fits my playstyle.
yeah i've seen those "this is the worst meta ever" posts a lot here. There are some dumb decks imo, but they are winnable so that's fine. What i find pretty irretating about this game tho, is the rock-paper-scissors theme in here. Also instead of developing a tactic for your deck and improving your gameplay, you are basicly just improving on how to counter your enemy, that's how i feel. I would REALLY enjoy it, if decks would be a lot more complicated and harder to pilot. :P
Since your post was fairly generic about what you find fun, it sounds to me like you just don't want to be playing something popular. Which btw, I dont fault you for. Sometimes I tryhard meta decks, sometimes I build homebrews. Play what you find fun, brother. However, all you said was that you don't want to smorc your enemy down and since one of the best decks in the meta right now is control Warlock, clearly you don't need to be playing off-meta Tier 3/4+ decks like Quest Druid and Divine Shield Paladin to play something that isn't just smorc. So, by the definition of not-popular decks being fun, no the top meta deck has never been fun. Because that's what a meta is; It's just whats popular to play. If you are more specific about what you find fun and what you don't find fun then maybe there is a discussion to be had but from where I'm sitting it sounds like you would never be happy with any meta.
We've had just about every kind of deck be powerful enough to warp the meta. Aggro (Face Hunter), Combo (Razakus Priest), Control (Warlock, right now), Midrange (Secret Paladin), OTK (Miracle Rogue way back before the Leeroy/Auctioneer nerfs), Ramp (Force/Roar druids back before Force of Nature was nerfed). It's all a matter of your outlook on what's fun, not a question of if different styles of decks can be popular.
Well, it is always subjective. I liked the time in 2016 when miracle Rogue was tier 1 and really fun to play. Then there was freeze mage which I enjoyed a lot. N'Zoth Paladin had a high Tier spot for a bit too. After that the full control C'thun warrior was an amazing deck that I really miss. And, yes I admit it, I think Cubelock is also a very fun deck.
These were my favourite top decks within the last two years. But I admit there were meta states when there were more fun decks which were still viable enough. I really enjoyed Crusher shaman right before Un'Goro launched.

Ah sorry, i love Combo and Otk the most. I wish i could have played Razakus when it was at it's prime. I was really happy with the KaC-Meta at first, it just was a little tiring after it going on for so long. I did not have the intention to sound salty or anything like that. :)
Most fun I had was post-Caverns Below nerf during Un'Goro meta. There was a crazy number of different truly viable decks you could play. Yeah, Jade Druid was around, but it wasn't oppressive at all like it was after Frozen Throne came out.
Our current meta is meh overall historically. It's not the worst I've seen (I've been playing since Goblins vs Gnomes and I felt the year of unending Shaman was the worst), but it's not in the upper level either.

To be fair, nobody has the intention to sound salty, lol. Some people just are. ;)
TBH, the devs have gone out of their way to make OTKs difficult/impossible so if that's your preferred style, and it used to be mine as well, then you're going to need to either accept losing, play wild, or open up to new decktypes. Every time a strong combo/OTK deck has been top in the meta they've nerfed it. That said, it sounds like you would have enjoyed the Patron Warrior days. Look up some videos on youtube of Patron Warrior if you want to see a meta defined by a combo deck that could play for board or OTK. Raging Worgen OTK was also viable for quite a long time, that'd be another fun one to check out. Especially the versions that ran Emperor Thaurisan, I used to love playing those. Quest/Exodia Mage was really fun at times. Malygos Miracle Rogue or Malygos Druid would also be worth checking out. Those weren't exactly top tier but they were viable in certain metas. Aviana, Kun, Malygos Druid is still viable in wild. All of this is to say that while that style of deck is not promoted in Hearthstone, it crops up occasionally and may be playable again in the future.
If you want Combo-y decks that are somewhat meta, check out the Mind Blast Priests that've been going around or StrifeCro was playing a Devilsaur Druid on ladder last night that was sweet. Go to his twitch page then the videos tab and about 2:20 into his 5/10 broadcast you'll see the deck.
Someone said it before. Decks that start out fun can quickly turn ugly and boring once it becomes the norm. I enjoyed even paladin at the start of this expansion. However it took like one week only for everyone to realize it's actually much better than odd paladin, and now I seem to face it every other game. I enjoy diverse metas where games do actually play out differently. Thankfully there is room for interaction and fun games when against paladins. Cubelock, however..... Every game plays one of two ways. Either they don't have Dark Pact on turn 6 and I manage to burn them down, or they do get it and, well, everyone knows how the rest of that game plays out.

I actually think the meta is unfun and These decks are OP is a sign of a healthy meta where a lot of new players are coming in and whinging. It's ironic that there's a lot of whiny post when the game is doing better.
"was there ever a time where the strongest decks in the meta were actually really fun decks, that didn't leave a bitter taste in your mouth."
The strongest decks, and hence the most oppressive ones, in the meta are always the most played. Them being the most played always makes them the most unpopular, regardless of what playstyle they are, since people get bored of facing and losing to them. Do you find control warrior fun? They were good, and hated, way back when. Do you find aggro fun? They have been very good, and ubiquitous and hated. Do you find combos fun? Cubelock and taunt druid have their fair share of hate, even though they are fun for people who like combos and control.
To most people, fun = janky and not tier 1. So to answer your question, the strongest decks will always be hated by people who don't play them, regardless of whether you find them "fun" or not.
I LOVED the Secret Pally meta! All the divine shields and christmastree full of secrets....Dr's 6 then 7 then 8...THOSE were the times...those were the times.
I don't think the problem is with the decks that are good right now I think the problem is when the decks that are good now are the same decks that were good 4 months ago. When things don't change then yes you will get frustrated and bored. That's why the future of wild looks really, really bad.
GvG, Dr. 7 and mech mage. Those were the times! <3
I was actually one of the best meta I have ever seen in HS. And I have seen them all. Dr Boom <3 (even if he would be considered s**t it today power creep meta)

The real cancer is the constant "xyz is cancerous!!11"
Every meta deck has something unfair about itsself, that's why it's a meta deck.
