I appreciate the courtesy and am happy to see that good sportsmanship still exists. WP and/or TY are polite. If you're not taking it that way the problem might just be of the pebkac variety.
If they've been spamming the whole game they should already be squelched so you never see the last one, anyway.
How is "thank you" after a win polite?
Someone thanking you for a game . . . how is it NOT polite? Saying Thanks or GG is what people do when they've finished to acknowledge the opponent's time and effort. The outcome is irrelevant. It's good manners to say something like that, just as it is to line up and shake hands after a sports match (in any sport, ever) at most levels.
The problem here is that Jaina's 'Thank you' sounds incredibly sarcastic. And for some reason it's usually Mages who BM to begin with.
Maybe I have really been away for too long, but I usually say "Thank you" no matter if I win or lose the game. It is simply a replacement for the handshake after card games IRL.
Perhaps I should stop doing this or something?

Well mate ask yourself if a well played just before you are about to finish or when opponent concedes might be a better choice. A Thank you emote adds more salt to the loss since it´s basically says: Hey mate thanks for the free win.

Imagine tennis player after loss when opponent want to shake hands instead slap his face and say FUCK YOU, YOU LUCKY BASTARD! I don't see anything wrong of saying thank you after match no matter you win or lose. Someone being polite is BM only if you make it to be BM in your own head.

Alas, mate, it seems someone disagrees that "Well played" is a proper response.

so it looks like some people don't mind at all and it creates negative emotions for others. i don't see having a reaction to perceived negative behavior from an opponent in a game you're invested in as a lack of maturity. your response to those emotions is probably a better indication of maturity. i personally see no value in the emote system for myself. it just never seemed to have a net positive impact on my experience, so now i instantly squelch every match and everything is fine.
what i think would solve a lot of problems is if blizzard just added an option to auto disable emotes or auto squelch every match for players who don't care for them. i know it takes minimal effort to squelch, but it's unnecessary. other card games provide that option, and it's a small thing, but it would likely improve the experience for a lot of players.
It annoys me. Only because it makes me think that they think I am bitter. I don't say "Well Played" until the exact moment I die. Just in case it is a bluff, or they mess up. But I wonder if they think I don't plan on saying it at all, so they say it to point that out. Like the equivalent of someone in frustration saying "You're welcome", before you say "Thank you". Rings similar in my paranoid mind.
Greetings when they kill my annoys me to no end though.
I used to do that when I first started, mostly to say thanks for the match, regardless of it being a win or a loss. Then a friend told me I was going to come off as smug and infuriate people. So now I only say thanks as a response to well played.
When I started playing, I used to Greet at the start and WP at the end of every game (win or lose). I also used other emoticons for fun as I saw the games as very lighthearted, and quite a few players joined in on that as we commented funny moments in games. I guess it's a newbie thing, and it does lose it charm after a while.
Only after hanging around here did I realize that so many people project BM into these simple statements. All the other online games I played regularly had a "gl hf" and "gg"/"gg wp" exchanges as a matter of common courtesy.
So yeah, now I don't do it so often, which is maybe in self-censorship so as not to trigger any sensitive folks out there which apparently there are many of. I do find this forcing of a "walking on eggshells" behaviour sad though (not so much in HS but that it is all around us nowadays).
If I think a game was good, I will still likely say "Well Played" (even if I won, and even the opponent didn't say it first), but only while/after already dealing the last damage. Saying it on opponents turn while winning (seeing a win on your next turn) does look like gloating, and is akin to the pre-emptive gg in other games that tries to say "just quit already, you're losing".
As with many things in communication, timing and context matter.
I only hate it if I do a "Well Played" at the end of a loss and they respond with a "Thank You". I wasn't complimenting you on your amazing skills of drawing and playing on curve, idiot. It was just a handshake "Good Game", which apparently you are too good or cool to return the favor. It's always aggro or mid-range players who reply with it too, as if they really think they played a good game.
On a side note, I generally don't emote anything in a win unless it was a drawn out fun game (far and few between these days), unless they emote a Well Played first. Figure most of the time the opponent doesnt want to hear me.

Is it considered gloating if I do it when the opponent ends the turn? Say, I have lethal and will kill my opponent, so I emote Well Played the moment my opponent passes the turn and my turn starts. Is it considered?
Not in my book, but I guess it depends on the person.
For me, it's more about talking on my turn vs his own turn. If you talk on my turn, it could be distracting, and is the only reason I squelch people. If they wish to talk on their turn, I'm cool with that (even if it's a "heh, greeting" lol)
Quote from moloch519 >> What triggers me are people who try to add me after they loose. I usually prepare a small sentence like "salty?", accept the request, paste it and then remove the guy from the friendlist before he can answer :) I am sure this triggers them hard XDXDXD
Wow, I can't believe how proud you sound saying this. What if they wanna add you to ask about your deck? Your attitude makes you look like an ass.
You should be ashamed.
That's what I was thinking too. If someone adds me after they've lost I prepare for the worst, but more often than not they just want to say well played, ask about deck list, etc.
Emoting "Thanks" or "Well Played" just before winning is incredibly insulting.
Well, I emote Well Played when it was a well played game on both sides, I emote Thanks when it was not well played on the opponent side, or simply if they are playing some cancer deck. I say Thanks in a "Good try but maybe better luck with a deck that requires more technical play and not just curving out or smashing face".
I interpret "Thanks" or "Well played" as "THANKS FOR THE FREE WIN YOU PIECE OF SHIT LOLOL," usually the BM emoters are playing some stupid ass aggro deck that won by pure luck of the draw anyways.

I do this if opponent BM:ed during the game.

Ah.. I have really taken too long of a hiatus as I completely forget they have the "well-played" as well. Thanks for the reminder.
But then why don't they just put "Good game" into it?

I feel oblivious. Because I have no clue if they emoted at all since the first thing I do after the mulligan is squelch.

I emote TY after every match , win or lose , I see it as polite. I will not change this.
It shows a lack of manners imo. I assume that they were raised poorly.
