Yeah, I used to buy 60 packs when expansion launches, plus 60 after a month or 2, but buying adventures with earned gold. Now, with a son and wife, If things are smooth I buy the pre-order and that's it. But that's not a priority at all.
I also like to ask my wife to open packs, she seems to be pretty lucky :P
I'm in a similar boat not wanting to spend money going forward but don't think it will be an issue if you keep up on the dailys and brawls. Even if you don't hold quests and optimized gold earned, you still get 45 gold per day plus a pack a week before counting any ranked wins. That's 16,000 gold there(another 3,650 if you win 3 games a day) plus 52 packs which averages to 5200 dust. If you assume the adventure is 3000g, you have enough gold to buy 80 packs of each new set. That should be enough to get you all commons and rares plus many epics and a few legendarys. To play any competitive deck you should have the dust to craft what you need. Would be restricted from gimmick decks but should have no issue with ladder on wild or standard.
That's an excellent point. Thanks for breaking that down. It's completely viable for my HS economy (2500 dust, 4100 gold)
The money i spent on this game are on the required adventures and around 20 euros in packs and some arena when i didn't want to spend gold for it. Unfortunately i miss some mandatory legendaries, like Sylvanas, Ragnaros or Dr. Boom, i crafted some for my favorite class (Paladin) like Tirion or Eadric the Pure and i got most of the cards required to create decent decks. That said, i reach every season rank 12-13 and i'm fine with it, even if with secret paladin i know i could reach higher ranks, i don't care, that's enough.
I'm really looking forward to Standard because it's somewhat a fresh start and overpowered cards, like the mentioned Dr. Boom o Sludge Belcher, are going away. Even this cancer aggro meta that you are required to follow if you want decen ranks is going away, which is awesome.
Holy cow I will never understand how people will pay hundreds for dollars for something that can be aquired for free and has 0 resell value.
time = money, simple as that
The ironic thing about this is you are saying you are willing to pay for the luxury of not "having to" play the game as much
Sorry but that's not it at all. There are two factors - time and money. Very few people have both. Those with time and no money can be f2p and spend time building their collections. Those with money but little time don't want to sit and grind out daily quests just to get gold to buy packs - it's inefficient and a waste of time. I would rather spend money and have everything I need in order to play the decks I want to play.
I rarely get more than 30mins - 1hr a day to play HS. If I had to spend a week grinding to get a card I wanted I would probably just stop playing. The money I spend on HS is worth less to me than the time it would take me to build my collection as a f2p.
F2p is not better than p2p and vice versa. The option you chose will depend on your personal situation.

Well said. There are times when I discover awesome new decks that I MUST PLAY NAOOOO!!! So I end up buying a 40-pack and then try to DE cards to complete those decks. Ain't nobody got time to grind for weeks, or months, to craft one deck (not me, anyway)

That's true. The year of the kraken has soooo many anti-aggro options. I'm looking forward to see the rest of the WotG cards.
I payed a total of something like 250 max to catch up. Playing for 11 months now and my collection is almost complete. What were you aiming for with the 600 bucks? Golden collection? I mean that 600 bucks plus all the dust should be more then enough for all cards?
I made some noob mistakes while determining how much $ I was willing to spend. The result was crafting various epics and legendaries, only to open them later in 40-pack purchases. Feelsbadman.
The ironic thing about this is you are saying you are willing to pay for the luxury of not "having to" play the game as much
It's not that ironic really, I mean for some it is about building random decks and playing "fun" stuff that isn't going to be great on ladder. This means that earning gold through playing can take a long time. I like playing the game, but I don't enjoy any of the high tier decks (I have played them all, don't get me wrong, I just find the play style and cards themselves boring).
So for me spending $ is a way for me to give me variety in what I play, I can hop from class to class and I have access to many cards to create decks that suit my mood.
I used to play with a lot more of a competitive attitude, but for me personally it gets really boring playing the same few decks over and over (I did get to Legend when I was really tryharding but that was more to get the cardback and prove to myself I could do it and the actual experience wasn't much fun).
I'm the type of person who loves the thrill of opening packs, trying all sorts of decks, and being able to formulate any deck that I please. I've spent $620 on HS so far, and was set to keep on spending for years to come.
With the announcement of Standard/Wild formats, card rotation, and the fact that there will be two expansions and an adventure each year, it's going to require more money than I'm willing to put out each year to stay competitive (and to fulfil my love to play any deck I want)
I'm sure that many of you have spent more than $620 on this game and are happy to spend even more. However, I'm at the stage in my life where I need to plan my funds for upcoming marriage and buying a home. Spending on HS at an even faster rate is not something I am willing to do.
Anyone else in the same boat?
If you can play every day (at least enough to do your dailies), don't spend any gold at all. Save up, then dump on the next expansion. Rinse, repeat. I only started saving a few months ago, and I'll be hitting 6000 gold banked today. $70 worth of WoG packs for free!

I think I can do that now. After spending so much money, I have a near-complete collection with about 4100 gold and 2400 dust. :)
I have spent more than that. I also pre ordered the new set. That said, I suspect that I will be down on my spending moving forward but that is also in part because I feel like I can mostly supplement my need to spend money with in game gold. You need to get your collection up to date before you can kind of coast.
I suspect I will spend my money on the game still, I do want to open a good 100 packs of every set and I do want to have access to most of the legends for building whatever I want to have fun with. I like deckbuilding rather than net decking and part of that is having a good collection to shift around with.
EDIT: for the record, hearthstone standard will be cheap in comparison to MTG standard. I have played at least 8 years of MTG standard over the years and its a lot more expensive. They have a mythic card in standard right now that runs $90+ each. The difference between cardboard crack and digital is minimal in my mind.
but your cards in magic are also worth money. your cards in hearthstone dont even actually exist. quit hearthstone today, you are down X amount of dollars. quit magic today, and you will get most of your value you put in back.
or you could keep your cards and 5-10 years later they will be worth even more.

I beg to differ. You will get some money back from selling old magic cards but you won't get anywhere near what you spent on them in the first place. If you've been collecting since beta it's a different story, you could probably make money but other than that, you're going to lose for sure.
As someone else mentioned, at least all HS cards stay the same dust value (for now). Yes, you don't get anything back when you quit but you also have the added bonus of not getting stuck with files, boxes, sleeves etc and the hassle of actually trying to sell the stuff.

The flip side of this is this:
MTG cards are rarely worth what you pay for them. You have to have access to selling a lot of chaff to get your money back out of a card which most players do not have. There is also a difference in reprints in magic where when they reprint something its price may tank. Hearthstone is cheaper to get all the cards and you can disenchant cards that are no longer relevant with rotation and salvage a portion of the worth. If I were to go and cash out of my magic collection right now I would probably go to a vendor and get something like 30-40% of its value back in cash.
For the cost of one decent standard magic deck you can practically have a full hearthstone collection. Magic decks in standard also fluctuate in playability very frequently too so if you need to shift what deck you play it adds up incredibly quickly.

These are all valid points. I've never played MTG but, from I hear, it's a super expensive endeavour compared to Hearthstone. I also like how all calculations are done for us in HS... I can imagine the pain it would be to keep track of all effects and such in MTG.

I actually thought this was going to be the main gist of the thread. Once you have a solid collection of Basic cards, you don't really need to spend money ever again.
Cardbacks and whatnot will likely keep me diving for my wallet, but I fully recognize that these are frivolous expenditures.

Some people just use the time some people use on farming gold to make real money. And they make so much of it that they do not mind buying some virtual goods without any resell value.

I honestly don't understand this logic of thinking. Just play wild and just keep doing what your doing if you dislike standard so much.
