I am new to both hearthstone and this forum. I made my account a couple days ago and did all the Quests, so currently I have about 700 Gold, 100 Dust and cards that I got from 6 or 7 free Classic Packs. Today I played some Ranked matches and reached rank 18 with a basic mage deck but can't get any further than that. Here are some questions I have that I couldn't really find in beginner guides:
- What should I spend my coins for ? I am not really good at arena as for right now (2-3 in the free run).
- How do I effectivley expand my collection ?
-Right now I am interested in standard mode because I think it could be a chance for me to keep track of the new meta that is going to there. Should I save coins for the new expansion ? Is there going to be a new adventure aswell ?
- I want to build one decent deck , so I can reach higher Ranks for ones. Is it worth DE alot of cards and then craft one good deck ? (I really like how Druid and Paladin play so far)
-Should I wait for the new Expansion/Standard mode before I save coins for any adventures ? Because nobody knows if BRM and LOE is going to be relevant, right ? Naxx isn't worth it I guess..
Hey, and welcome to Hearthstone (and Hearthpwn)! To answer your questions, I would watch streamers (who play arena) and learn how to draft and play effectively, eventually you'll get good enough where you can farm a lot of gold (and dust, card packs, etc). Even getting 3+ every time is more value for your gold than just buying a pack. Second, Standard will be easiest for you to play in. There have been numerous adventures and expansions before, and it'd be hard for you to catch up on all of them now. I'd save your gold until the next expansion, and don't make any expensive cards right now because no one knows what the Standard meta will be. DON'T disenchant a lot of cards to craft one deck, it's an awful idea! I know it's probably hard but wait until Standard and then work your way up to decks, it's not worth it to make a deck right now. As I said earlier, just save most of your dust and gold for now until we figure out what Standard (and the new expansion) has in store. Again, the quickest way to make gold and dust is arena, so try your luck at that (eventually you'll get the hang of it). I started with arena and eventually became infinite (7+ wins each run, netting 150+ gold each time which is enough for another run). Arena will also teach you a lot about the game and the various mechanics, so it's just a great way to start. You can also keep playing ranked, it's good practice as well. Sorry if this is a little unorganized, I'm multitasking at the moment. Good luck!
I will wait and see what the new meta is going to be like. Is it worth spending the coins I made so far on more classic packs ? As far as I know the cards in there are still the skelleton for most decks.
Also, how do you guys keep up with whats going on in the meta? What decks are good to build on a budget ? All I can find online is pretty old and outdated tbh.
Hello to the community, since we don't know much about the new mode and the upcoming expansion i would suggest to keep saving gold till then. You can start buying classic packs i guess because cards from this collection will be playable in the standard mode BUT there will be a new collection as well. Naxx will be worthless for you and a waste of gold/money. Also it's not the best time to DE cards because probably some are gonna nerfed and you will be able to DE them for their full dust.
Like I said, you should probably just spend your gold on arena (I don't know if you know this or not, but you get a pack from every run no matter what). You should be able to find tier lists online for arena which recommend cards to choose, and when you're playing you usually want to just trade as much as possible and get as much value from cards as you can.
As for the constructed meta, it's changing constantly and is different between regions, ranks, and times of the day. Right now, you usually find secret Paladins and combo Druids, which are very strong decks that in Standard are not going to exist (Paladin loses most of its cards and FoN+SR is getting nerfed). On a budget, you could build a good zoo Warlock or (dare I say it) face Hunter. When I started I used icy-veins.com, you can find current meta deck-lists there as well as budget decks, decks for people missing the adventures, and old decks. Now is kind of a tough time to start Hearthstone because usually the advice was "craft Piloted Shredders and Dr. Boom, get Naxx, etc" but now since Standard is a thing, it'd be wasteful to get those cards. You might just have to wait until Standard settles, because most of the decks right now, including budget ones, include adventure cards from Naxx or BrM.
2. Avoid Arena at all costs for now! Even if you are good in game and would do decent there, it's better to buy Classic packs for gold, since Arena reward is random and you might get TGT (that you have no use of most likely yet, as you need Classic cards) or even worse GvG that will be removed with new update.
3. My advice is to get 1st wing of Naxxramas in next 10-20 days, because when new update comes it will be removed and you won't be able to get it ever, but if you have 1st wing however you'll be able to buy the rest with gold and it will be profitable both if you plan to play Wild, or if you plan to disenchant all cards from Naxx and get dust for it (a lot of legendaries there so it's better than to buy packs for that gold I think). here is my thread about Naxxramas: Advice for new players!
4. It is usually worth disenchanting cards that are not good or that you are sure you won't play (for example I dusted whole Paladin class, won't play it for sure as Paladins were never cool to me), especially if you are not planning to pay a lot of real $ for game, so only way to have 1-2 good viable decks is to disenchant the rest, or you'll need like a year to make good stuff without disenchanting. However! Don't do it yet, wait couple of weeks, play a bit, know what you'll play, understand what cards are good, and wait for update to see what will be viable then, so while it is the only way to have viable good decks if you are F2P don't disenchant anything yet, just open Classic packs with gold.
5. Only when you are sure you are good in game and can average higher than 4 games and only after update go and play arena, once you saw tutorial videos on how to pick good cards and all that. Even then think twice, since Arena reward is random and you cannot choose which pack you'll get, and you want exclusively Classic for now. Also games in arena usually last a bit longer then on Ranked mode (unless you play some fatigue deck, which you don't) and you don't get 10 gold per 3 wins there, so all in all, just play Ranked the best you can, buy classic packs with gold only, and my advice is to actually go for the first wing of Naxx for the reasons above (and in that thread I linked) however, no need to do it yet.
Good luck!
Just to further convince you....I dislike this guy, but I still upvoted his post ;P

What is Hearthstone to you? A fun and semi-competitive game with wacky effects and crazy RNG outcomes or just a card game you wanna grind as many wins you can get as fast as possible in?
IMO getting to high rank as a new player is pointless until standard arrives, the ground is shifting under your feet so to speak. (I feel the same way tbh, can't wait for standard)
I'd concentrate on getting your Classic set to a reasonable completion level. Then after standard arrives you can evaluate what to do next.
The best thing about arena is that you have access to all the cards, I'm sure it'll be fun to experiment with them all

Rank 18 for a new guy is pretty good. It's ok.
Higher ranks will come after refining your deck with new cards and when you'll have a better understanding of game concepts of efficient trading, card advantage, and tempo. And understanding current meta, of course.
- What should I spend my coins for ? I am not really good at arena as for right now (2-3 in the free run).
- How do I effectivley expand my collection ?
Basically, it's doing Arena runs or straight buying packs. If you can, try to get good at Arena. Watching twitch streams might help with that.
-Right now I am interested in standard mode because I think it could be a chance for me to keep track of the new meta that is going to there. Should I save coins for the new expansion ? Is there going to be a new adventure aswell ?
I'd say you should focus on Classic packs first, with occasional expanion packs when you feel like it. When starting, keep an eye out for good commons and rares from all sets. Advice from other players might help with that.
According to Blizzard, there will be a new adventure this summer.
- I want to build one decent deck , so I can reach higher Ranks for ones. Is it worth DE alot of cards and then craft one good deck ? (I really like how Druid and Paladin play so far)
I wouldn't recommend DEing cards if you feel like you're going to play this game for a while. Sooner or later, you'd want to switch decks, and you might miss those cards you disenchanted.
Keep getting packs from a single set. When you'll gather most of it's commons, you'll naturally start accumulating dust. Classic set is a good place to start, as it's going to be relevant for a long time.
Only DE when you absolutely sure you won't regret it in the future.
-Should I wait for the new Expansion/Standard mode before I save coins for any adventures ? Because nobody knows if BRM and LOE is going to be relevant, right ? Naxx isn't worth it I guess..
As for adventures, some BRM and LOE cards will definitely be relevent for a while. Reno Jackson and Emperor Thaurissan for example. If you can afford it, buying adventures is MUCH easier and less frustrating than accumulating gold for them (It's frustrating because when accumulating you won't be buying packs for a long-long time).
I'd say, you can spend your coins for Classic packs freely - you probably should start growing your collection.
Another way is developing Arena skills. If you want a rule of a thumb - you'll probably learn enough to start Arena runs when you break that rank 18 barrier and get to something like 15-16. This won't get you to infinite 7+ wins, but you won't feel like it's completely RNG at that point.
Also TrumpSC youtube channel have many good videos for new players. Part of them can be somewhat outdated, but their concepts are still sound. For example: "Warlock zoo-decks are good to learn about efficient trading."
Good Luck, and See you in the Tavern!

"Infinite" doen't mean "big" - it can be small and have no end.
I would be careful about disenchanting cards from whole classes. If you want to do quests efficiently, you need to be able to win games in almost any class. If all you have are basic cards for one class, good luck with that.
If your objective is to get as high a rank as possible, you will need to concentrate on just a deck or two (or buy lots of packs). But that means you will not be able to win with your other classes in Ranked mode. You can try Casual, but if you win a lot, Casual can be more competitive than Ranked at ranks 17-20. I prefer to remain at weaker ranks so that I can do all of my quests in Ranked.
Other than unlocking one wing of Naxx, your best bet is Classic packs, with maybe a few TGT packs thrown in. Eventually, you will want to concentrate on the new expansion. But you might as well beef up your decks now with cards from Classic packs, since it may be more than a month until the new set is released. (For other adventures, the first wing of LoE is probably much more useful than the first wing of BRM. If you want to spend money, Adventures are the most efficient way to spending it.)
I don't really like recommending new players to try to farm arena. Personally I think it's a long process to get to the point where arena is profitable. I'd say just work on your dailies, maybe play some casual, start messing with the basic mage, priest, and hunter decks by adding what you think are the best cards until you start to build a collection via classic packs. Then once you feel comfortable with your own abilities, start playing arena.
When tavern brawl comes up this Wednesday you should be able to get a pack.
Wow, thank all of you guys for the good response! Seems to be a very nice community.
I played again today and I am just wondering when/if buying the adventures with real money is worth it for me anytime soon. I guess I will spend my coins an classic packs and try to improve to get better rewards at the end of the month.
I don't know whether or not I should buy the adventures with money because I am not really experienced so far and even with better cards I wouldn't be a much better player. Let's see what the standard mode brings us. Are there any somewhat viable decks to build without adventures ? To maybe reach rank 15+ ?? All I see atm are decks with alot of legendaries, and I am only rank 19 right now.
Edit: Just opened four classic packs and got 1 legend, 3 epics and 3 rares(1golden) :) seems like a good start for me haha. Best pack was Alexstraza, golden azure drake, an epic paladin card and arcane golem
Hey man thanks again for the tips. I looked up some warlock and aggro paladin decklists, I would like to play something along those lines. Is it to much to ask for possible replacements for adventure card ? Also I will save coins from now on to buy the first wing of naxx.
If you download Innkeeper in order to upload your collection here and copy in a link to a deck you like we could help you a whole lot better :)

Ever since arena stopped giving classic packs, it started to suck for new players, since for 150 coins you "break even" with getting a shitty pack (for a brand new player at least) plus 50 coins worth of stuff if you go 3-3 (I assume that a new player would get this on average).

Well before the standard announcement it was an easy question buy naxx and craft boom.. now.. well try to get some classic packs and get LOE.. I think that LOE and specially the discover mechanic are really good for new players since they are good stand alone cards..
Since naxx is cycling out and is mandatory in 90% of the current decks I barely have any deck to suggest you without it.. so just accumulate some classic cards and ehn we will see what happens in the new expansion..
about crafting.. feel safe to craft *2 Knife Jugglers the card might be nerfed so you get the dust back anyway, iron beak owl is always good, you can "waste" 80 dust to get *2 piloted shredders and be able to get better quality decks for now.. btw I like just spectating from time to time and give tips feel free to add me if you are in EU.
So, you're new and most interested in standard. I think it's safe to say that there are 2 roads for you:
(A) Open only classic packs for a little while. Not only classic packs are the best packs you can buy but from now and until 1-2 after the nerfs are announced it's the best time to buy them. It's doubtful that there will ever be a better time to buy classic packs because the upcoming nerfs will give you the extremely rare opportunity to disenchant some cards in the classic set for full value.
(B) Gather gold so that you can spend it all in arena after the expansion releases. Surely you will not be good for a little while, but it's a good investment, and probably the best way to get cards faster. Try using heartharena and watch some streamers etc for arena tips.
Worth considering, even though you specifically said that your focus is going to be standard, is that Naxx will get locked (at least for a little while) if you dont have at least 1 of its wings. So, you may want to get just the first wing of it.
- I want to build one decent deck , so I can reach higher Ranks for ones. Is it worth DE alot of cards and then craft one good deck ? (I really like how Druid and Paladin play so far)
I would say that... No, it's not worth disenchanting a lot of cards to make one deck. I'd argue that the first few months it's best to make budget decks with whatever cards you happen to stumble upon.
I will try to get the first wing of naxx this month(120 gold atm) and then save about 600 coins as a backup for future arena runs. Everything else is going to be spend on classic packs
