Any thoughts? I've moved up from rank 20 to 15 so far with this but I need more games to see how far up it can take me. I am reliant on Messenger Raven to find one of the key Highlander Mage legedaries I am missing. I am also missing Doomsayer which I am guessing is good early or late combo'd with Frost Nova.
I am finding that it gets beat most often early by aggro. If it gets through that, it usually swings one heavy card a turn. Due to this, late game is usually with a mittful of big cards still. I find with Arcane Intellect is difficult to find the free mana to cast it, the game never lets up now.
I am still considering crafting Reno as he should be an insta-buff.
I am open to ideas. My gaol is to break above rank 10.
Deck tracker says I have a positive win rate (~60%), but Warrior is destroying me (~25%). Weapons are an issue as are speedy pirates. Warrior puts me in a hole early I can't crawl out of. I am currently seeing if Stickyfinger is playable in the deck. The 5/2 claw might be common enough to not be a waste as often.
I am playing standard between rank 15-13 currently.
Next weakest is Priest, but I don't think I've fought many Priests so those results may be skewed. I do recall minions raised from the dead wiping me out a few times.
You have been patient so maybe consider waiting a wee bit longer for the nerfs and seeing how the meta shifts. I have a feeling it will be super aggy so Highlander Mage might be a little too slow to keep up.
If it is an aggro meta, a control style mage might be a good option but warrior and shaman probably have better control tools at the moment.
Worst mentality possible. Maybe because some people play to have fun rather than what is the tip top of the meta? Wow, having fun in a video game, what a notion.
He said competitive in his original post. Don't be so judgemental.

More important, there is no meta yet, so saying one archetype is definitively "more successful" is just plain hogwash.
At the time of this post, highlander hunter was more successful based on stats.
Zephrys is a very safe craft. Highlander decks are not going anywhere for a while and he even finds a home in some non-highlander decks that want to draw their deck fast.
If you are really into playing Highlander Mage then you should be aiming to craft Reno (he's not essential but he's very good) and Alexstrasza(classic) is a pretty strong card in the deck to bring them down to 15 health and stick an 8/8 on the board which will win you a lot of games. Kalecgos can be a potent finisher as well although it can be a bit of a high roll. Mountain Giant is always a safe craft as well and is a strong card in Highlander Mage and a top target for your Conjurer's Calling. These are all strong additions although I wouldn't call any of them absolutely essential and they can be subbed out although all should give a bump to winrates.
Zilliax is the best neutral legendary in the game but it's becoming hard to suggest for those with limited dust since it's rotating soon.
Thanks AsherWare. I crafted Zephyr for the reasons you stated and I don't regret it. I didn't realize is gives out of class options, awesome.
I am thinking Reno is next if I can still play this deck after the meta change. Maybe I can do without Alexstraza and Kalecgos since Messenger Raven, Azure Explorer and Dragqueen plus her summoned dragons can all potentially find the one needed in a particular situation.
I made it up to rank 12 with this deck so far from after 34 matches (my first time to rank 12). Win rate is currently at 65% and Warrior is now 40%. Shamman is 62.5% which I am okay with pre-nerf. I am stunned that with coin is ~40% and without is ~80%... really stunned.
I agree, I won't be crafting Zilliax for that reason.
I think I will get a Mountain Giant and find a place for it since it's cheap. I got a Gruul recently which I could trade for that maybe. But I will probably find some dust by dusting gold cards and extras first. But won't spend much more until we see what happens with the nerfs tomorrow as everyone has warned.
Any thoughts on Tortollan Pilgrim being in the deck? Occasionally she turns the tide once in my hand but just as often I can't seem to play her in the given situation with what is left in my deck. Maybe her value reduces too much without Galaxy in my deck. Plus, since I need cards that play early and a dragon, I always boot Pilgrim from my starting hand.
I do get Galaxy in my hand sometimes from the discover cards, but at 7 Mana it is hard to play too. Right now, it seems that if you aren't dropping a big creature every turn by turn 7 you are falling behind. I do play it if at all possible though. Dragoncaster often helps but I find I use that for clear or Conjuers Calling on Dragoncaster to get out of a hole. Perhaps Dragoncaster and the relentlessness of the new meta pushes out Pilgrim.
Any thoughts on cards in the deck that I might consider subbing out as I sub things in?
*I mistakenly put the wrong card name instead of Tortollan Pilgrim and just corrected it.
Amazing, after 42 total matches, if I start first (85% win rate average) I have only lost to Warrior and Mage. 100% win rate against the other classes.
If I start with the coin my win rate is only 35% and have zero wins against 4 classes.
Is everyone else's that weighted? If not, perhaps I need just a little more speed early game.
Hey OP, currently highlander dragon mage is one of my favorite decks. I’d highly highly recommend two legendaries. First and foremost whenever I draw or play Reno it is so satisfying, he is so good. Then in the next 3-6 months as you save dust I’d recommend kalecgos due to him being a dragon and triggering dragon in hand effects and he has an insane ability.
I understand dust is tight but I’m just saying I can not recommend Reno enough. Also it looks like you have about 6 dragon cards. You may find yourself struggling to activate Malygos when you need and if so I’d recommend some smaller dragons to help with the aggro issue.
Yup, he's in there, took out Khartut Defender giving up on health restore. I will update the deck tomorrow. Testing out a deck without Vulpera and Puzzlebox to increase speed tonight. Dragons are usually just barely enough now.
I wouldn’t give up on the deck just yet. I am currently playing Reno Dragon Mage in Wild, it’s a lot of fun and very competitive. At some point when you can afford the wild cards you could transition across.
I’ve only started playing Wild this season after spending 8,180 dust in crafting cards. When I started 3 years ago I dusted everything that wasn’t Mage and Hunter to get me going. Have kept all cards the last 2 years.
There are a number of options for building your Mage deck in standard. Dragons and big spells is one, playing almost spell-less and going minions is another (either with Galaxy or Giants/Book/Conj) and then there is a Mana Cyclone build.
At this point experiment a little, play with what you have and try to work out what can suit. I’m working on a few things at the moment. Mage players like Apxvoid are great to follow also.
A good way to try things is to dual a friend and use their deck with the cards before you craft them.
Up until DoD I had 2 decks I played, cyclone (with the borrowed Flamewalkers) and a mixed Mage deck. I have been trying to get a new Cyclone deck going on the side without the walkers semi successfully.
I'm not giving up on this Draglander deck yet... just experimenting as you put it. I have a modified one I am trying now which shifts for more early play and less late. I seemed to have excess late play cards originally. Not really use to Mage going deep lol.
I am very likely to get Reno now, just want to test out the new deck for a while to see if I need him. Every time I do get him with Messenger Raven he kicks ass.
Thanks for all your help guys. I crafted Reno and made some changes to take advantage of the meta. I see things more clearly now. Im 7-1 with the new deck so far and already hit my goal of rank 10. Let's see how high it can climb.
Face Hunter is still a problem... It's nuts and it's all I am facing now.
I can’t imagine playing highlander mage without Reno. He must bring up the win rate of the deck several percentage points his impact is so crucial. If you tried the deck without him, then you didn’t really give the arc type a chance at all.
never mind, just caught the last comment where you mention crafting Reno. Have fun
Okay I found an installed Hearthstone Deck Tracker. It's in game overlay works. Being a bit of a stat nerd, I think I am going to like that program.
Still not sure how to show a deck here.

There is only my justice now

Agree with the Dragons and actually did so, the deck seems to be one or two cards evolved since I posted to address this.
I will wait to see the actual nerf and comp tomorrow before dusting anything for Reno yet.
Awesome, after looking at my deck I realized I only run 8 dragons but it Feels consistent enough. Cobalt Spellkin is a good add and is only a rare.
Yup, he's in there, took out Khartut Defender giving up on health restore. I will update the deck tomorrow. Testing out a deck without Vulpera and Puzzlebox to increase speed tonight. Dragons are usually just barely enough now.
It seems I have no answer for Face Hunter at all. I'm dead by turn 6. Going to have to look at taunt and health boost again.
I wouldn’t give up on the deck just yet. I am currently playing Reno Dragon Mage in Wild, it’s a lot of fun and very competitive. At some point when you can afford the wild cards you could transition across.

Ya so... the meta is very different up here. Can't win many games it seems. Dead very quickly. Careful what you wish for I guess lol.
I mean I got hit by 5 Leroy Jenkins for 30 damage while at 30 in a single round! I had no idea that was a thing 😂
