So I've made rank 10 and sorta hung up there with Big Spell Mage. Kingsbane Rogue, Togwaggle Druid, and Shudderwock Shamans are the hardest matchups for me right now. I think Odd Warrior would be as well but I don't see many of them.

Big spell mage is not a meta deck but odd warriors face the same matchup issues and use Azalina Soulthief to somewhat alleviate it. Combined with weapon destruction and knowledge, this card beats toggwaggle druid consistently. It also gives you game against shudderwok shaman and kingsbane rogue, especially if the opponent doesn't know how to counterplay, which is often the case up to dumpster legend level players, nevermind rank 10
Big spell mage should be favored against odd warrior unless your DK is in the bottom of the deck. Just don't draw cards, abuse your DK hero power, save polymorph for after playing your DK and/or direhorn hatchlings and you should be fine
The best performing deck for me is deathrattle hunter/Secret midrange hunter. Rexxar is the value powerhouse and all other cards can combo or provide early pressure. It's up to you how you use them is specific matchups, but i do not consider them hard to pilot.
I have hit legend before, am F2P, I can definitely help you. I play on US, isee you do too, Jaybaseball1#1802 . I'm happy to spectate your games and give tips..
Well I made it to rank 6 with a nice winstreak before finally losing. I'm definitely pleased with what I've accomplished this season and will not be disappointed if I don't climb much more. I feel like it puts me in good position for next season even if I don't make it.
Here's a very interesting perspective : the meta has a very circular way to go about. There are decks countering decks countering decks. At every given point in time though, there is a type of deck that no longer gets played, because in the past, it was countered heavily, but if people would play it now, it wouldn't find many counters.
Currently that deck is Priest Mechathun on Eu.

This is excellent insight! I've basically always known this but I feel like my major problem is understanding "micro metas"...basically understanding what deck counters the decks people are playing at certain ranks. I think my problem is I study the resources available to me (meta snapshot, etc.) and, while very good information, they're really only helpful to those playing at the higher end of the spectrum (ranks 5+ IMO). At rank 13 you still have a plethora of decks: from unrefined netdecks, to gimmick decks, etc. It's always been hard for me to get a read on what is going to work at those higher ranks. Once I get to rank 10 I feel like I started seeing a lot more consistency with my matchups and I had a LOT more success!
Made it to 5 today! I'm pretty jazzed. Going to be a lot of work to try and climb any higher but...WTH...might as well right? Shout out to my boy jaybaseball1 for the assist today.

Definitely, token druid was great, then got popular, got very countered, went away, came back etc. This is very apparent in ranks 5-2, where I'm perpetually stuck. 9-5 is fine for me, if I get lucky I can do it one win streak. After that, I don't play often enough to get a deck with a favorable meta to rank 1/legend. I get to rank 3 or 2, start facing a different meta, and either sink back or just stop playing and stay there for a bit.
I decided to stop playing at R3 last season so I started at R6 (0 stars). Lost my first 3 games with Big Spell Mage due to an anti-control micro-meta so I switched to Tempo Mage and won 3 in a row then switched to Secret Hunter and won 3 more bringing myself back to R5. Now that I'm out of the counter-control decks I'm probably going to play Big Spell Mage again.
If Yo managed to hit rank3 you will also be able to hit legend. Just need time and i highly suggest to stick to one deck, that you have fun with. What also helps alot is, when the deck doesn't have those 90-10 matchups.
You and I are actually pretty similar here. I've been playing since GvG, never bothered to grind long and hard enough to get anywhere near Legend, and I'm 34, which isn't very old at all in the grand scheme, but, as far as gaming these days goes (and especially in the case of Hearthstone) I'm one of those grandpas who stopped being cool roughly two decades ago but still hasn't figured it out yet. I'd love to do some sparring and have some deck discussions. Maybe I can finally hit the big "L" myself and avoid dying a broken, failed man.

You have to run the right deck, at the right time, and you have to run it well. Rank 3 is when the grind really begins.
