Well, maybe this will sound familiar to some of you players out there, I want to share my frustration in the current meta.. or in any meta for that matter, it’s called Hearthstone :P
At the moment I’m kind of stuck on ladder, like many of you out there, I am stuck between 10-6! I reached 5 almost 4x now. But RNG or my lack of skills are simply holding me back.
So, when playing Secret Mage I run in to a lot of mirror matches and a lot of priests, and hardly any Warlock, what is a good matchup for secret mage.. . But when I play Zoo lock I run in to many Warlocks, so they are out there, plenty. Blizzard just won’t let me face then on my mage deck. As a mage I lose from priest like 60% , but when playing Spitefull priest I lose 60% from that same secret mage deck...
But there also moments, like the one I will show you an example from, just simply not having the board clears to deal with the agro push and they just steam roll over me. I have a perfect example of this situation VS an agro druid.
Maybe you can tell me what I did wrong.. With the mulligan, I kept the Netherspite historian and a Dragon, so I could fish for a Duskbreaker.. but I had no such luck. 2 mind controls in hand..
in any case, I hope this short game will give you guys at least some sort of amusement.. at least it put a smile on someone’s face then :) I added the mage and he told me he has this atleast 60% of the time.. No wonder so many agro decks on ladder atm.
Woah I never played Priest, but I watched 10 seconds and I already see a mistake. You coin out a 2 drop ( a bad 1 drop btw statwise) before even knowing what kind of Druid he is,while holding two 3 drops ,and u hold a dragon that benefits from your handsize!!! He plays Direwolf . Now u get lucky and get a two drop . Now he buffs his Wolf and trades into your two drop .
On turn 3 you play your 3/5 taunt into his 5/3 , now you decide for whatever reason ( he used already a lot of his buffs ) to gift him a 2/4 ??? Wut??? With pleasure he trades his 5/1 into your 3/5 and plays a Fledgling.
From there on his Fledgling does what it does highrolling to victory.
But still this is no excuse for such awful early gameplay , you even got lucky to topdeck a twodrop imo.
As a competetive card game compared to other games in the genre Hearthstone is a bad game. It does earn millions of dollars a year and is stupidly addictive and enjoyable to a degree, but it's a bad game none the less.
The game system is just too simple, and the cards are way too swingy. Add this to starting hand of 3 (I mean this got to be a joke) and you have a luck of the draw fiesta started at the beginning of each match already. The simplicity of the system (destroy opponent's hero) limits design space and as the goal of the game seems to be all about quick matches queued after one another, they can't just print Chillwind Yetis and Oasis Snapjaws, cause it would make the games too grindy/chessy without the x-factor.
We are now in a situation where a 13/4 statted Fledling with windfury is a possibility if you don't happen to draw the answer early enough. And I'm not just bashing the Fledling, but the nature of "Answerstone" in general. If you had destroyed your opponents board with a Duskbreaker that would have also been a shitty moment, albeit not for you anymore. The power level is insane when the games can fly out of the window in two turns not because of misplays but because of the luck of the draw or the lack of an answer.
My gripe is that people seem to take this game semi-seriously as a competetive game and that the huge influence Blizzard has to a wide customer-base is taking too much foot-hold from potentially better games. Also the fact that when a discussion arises where people start talking about "great games" and they mention MtG as one of them baffles the shit out me! If someone could point out an older card game to me than MtG, please do, but other than that leave that aged miserable system alone and start consentrating on the future and better systems dear lord!
coining out the 2 drop, is okayish u got rewarded for him beein aggro and topdecking another 2 drop. But u also had 2 3 drops which tempowise would have been the better play (turn 2 3/5 taunt > turn 1 1/3)
than playin tarcreeper over Glimmerroot was another questionable decision havin in mind he had a 5/3 on board, u know u dont have to end the game at 30 lifes. Ur Lifetotal is a ressource u have to use and playing tarcreeper to save 5 facedmg was a very bad decision imo.
but the worst was tradin the 2/4 into his 5/3 holymoly. cant even imagine what was the intention to do this.
PS: oh also keepin scalebane in hand is kinda meh. i know u did it cuz u had historian in hand but why not the 4 mana dragon? considering hes aggro both cards are bad to keep but twilight can be dropped a turn earlier and would probably offer better trades as a scalebane.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, aspecially from you and wingdude 22! Looking back and with your response I totally agree the other play and coin on 3 could have made a better impact on the game. I was to desperate to fish for a Duskbreaker on turn 2..
And yes I did asume it was agro, but in my defense, its been 90% Agro druid and 10% jade since 10.2
its clear to me, its both ^^ I suck at hearhstone and I get rekt by bad RNG :D

???? OP asked a question . What inspired you to do a rant about Hearthstones design Philosophy?
Btw. there are many players from other games ( poker, chess) that find HS , hmm not hard but appealing. Also even smart, successful and equally minded Pros can have long discussions about the correct play.

yea i thought the same, so I just figured best thing to do was ignore his reaction completely :D

Mainly it's just Flappy Bird going out of control, which it tends to do if you don't have an immediate answer ready.
What is important to realize is that Spiteful Priest does not run Shadow Word: Pain/Death or Potion of Madness, which is a sacrifice it makes to get consistently good results from Summoner. However, this means you rely on Duskbreaker as your only board control in the early game and sometimes you just don't draw or discover it. So your choice of deck does put you at a disadvantage against this opponent.

The design philosophy is what leads to these situations. Of course in the video there were a couple of questionable plays, but what is the saddest part in my opinion, is the fact that the platform enables these huge swingy plays and yet all day every day people start threads about nerfing x, nerfing y, while in fact the whole system should be booted! :)
I congratulate you OP, on your mature acceptance that you did a mistake....the only way you'll grow and learn to be a better player!
As for the game, it's sometimes like that, you make a right play but still lose, you have to be able to recognize when that's the reason of your loss, and when you did something wrong (that can bite you in the ass 10 turns later, not necessarily immediately!) you have to be able to pinpoint it so you can work on it in the future :)

This is very true indeed. Even in a short game like this, anyone could miss it.. it can happen in the smallest details.. like coining on the wrong moment :D

As Secret Mage, you are favored against all current Priest decks (even Spiteful, though just slightly); that's one reason Secret Mage is so popular.
Secret Mage's bad matchups are Aggro and Murloc Paladin, Spell Hunter, Token Druid and Demonlock.
Of course this depends on your tech choices to some degree, but generally speaking, that's the outlook.
If you are serious about climbing the ladder, I would advise against switching decks. You really need to learn to play one deck well, and you'll gain experience even when suffering through unfavorable matches.

its 44% winrate for secret mage vs spiteful, but this is since the patch 10.2 has come out, so probable not a good sample size yet.. I do beleave its good to learn the other decks to get to know their weakness and strong sides, so you know how tp play against them better.
The coin to drop 2 was a good choice against Druid you have make sure to outtempo him early on

Uhhmm , No.
There are several reasons why this was a bad play, maybe you take the time and read all of the comments in this thread, even the Original Poster agreed with some of the lines that were suggested .

the player might be bad but the coin was actually good it helps alot to control the board

With the hand they had the coin into 2 drop was the worst tempo play you could make. Playing nothing and coining 3 drop on 2 and playing the other 3 drop on 3 was a much stronger tempo play.
Hi guys,
No chance, and lost from the get go! Do you know that feeling??
Well, maybe this will sound familiar to some of you players out there, I want to share my frustration in the current meta.. or in any meta for that matter, it’s called Hearthstone :P
