I have only been playing mech mage and got from 20-5 no problem. Now that I hit the rank 7-4 range the % of control decks has increased 10 fold. I am having trouble stringing together enough wins to get higher than rank 4.
So my question is, should I keep struggling as is? or roll a new deck? (maybe start crafting for Freeze mage)
Mech Mage should certainly get you to legend. You might want to adjust to deck according to the meta though. i.e. add Harrison/Loatheb if you run into loads of Rogues & Warriors, Black Knight if you encounter too many Druids.
Do not be surprised by this. It's only natural that you keep hitting a brick wall at that point. Achieving legend is hard because Rank 20-5 is virtually a warm-up. No offense to anyone, but it's considered a play pin by good players and is pretty much meaningless. It's a misconception that getting from 5 to legend is just the last little thing you have to do, in reality climbing the ladder only just gets started at Rank 5. Besides the fact that win streaks stop, the players are just better and every deck is going to be complete with all the legendary and epic cards needed for whatever it is they are playing. It's not supposed to be easy from that point onward and it isn't easy for the average player.
To get legendary, you have to step up your game to the next level. Make zero mistakes, find the deck that counters the decks you play against the most at that rank and plan several turns ahead. You can't just play a typical game and expect to win more than 50% of your matches, you have to play a superb game.
btw, any of the popular Mech Mage decks is viable for getting legendary. There is not a really hard counter to Mech Mage anyway. You mentioned control decks, as if they are the counter to Mech Mage? That's a fallacy, Mech Mage is actually strongest against control decks and weakest against aggro and mid-range decks but really it isn't weak to anything.

Considering players above level 5 good as though those below are not is a fallacy in itself. If I remember correctly blizzard stated that only 15% of players make it to level 5 and above; so what do you consider the other 85%, Crap???

Playing casually these days (work), always happy to talk strategy and deck building.

definately not! i find that rank 8 - rank 3 has players who have roughly the same skills
edit: to be honest i never got higher than rank 3, but i never noticed a big difference in player skills among those ranks
I am climbing the ladder and currently at rank 11 with a Secrets Mage deck that runs Ethereal Arcanist, Illuminator and Spellbender. Check my deck out if you have a moment. =) I wrote a detailed guide for the deck list and I tried to justify each and every card choice as well as I could. I want my deck to make it to Legend and I will do my best to get it there this season. Nobody uses Ethereal Arcanist, Illuminator or Spellbender and yet I still put up a good fight against most meta decks. Oh what's that Malfurion? Your Shade of Naxxramas is at 5/5? My Ethereal Arcanist is at 9/9! Pity you don't have BGH in your hand yet.... =D
As for advice on how to get to Legend... If your deck does not have literally every card it needs to function, including all of the legendaries (Dr. Boom says hi) then you will have a rough time getting to Legend.

looks interesting. how are yu doing against faster decks, i.e mechmage, hunters or zoo?
(tbh neither of those listed, with the excpetion of zoo which i rarely encounter in the higher ranks atm, are very fast aggro decks)
With the addition of Zombie Chow I'm faring a bit better against Aggro decks than I used to. I still have trouble with Zoo because I just run the one Blizzard. If I tossed in a Flamestrike I'd probably do a bit better in the Zoo match-up because Zoo doesn't usually kill me until Turn 8. I'm uncertain of what to drop for the Flamestrike though. Blizzard into Flamestrike clears Nerubian Eggs but I have to take at least 8 damage in the process. =/
My deck is currently undefeated against Hunter. I've only played against 4 or 5 Hunter decks at rank 12-10 and all of them lost to me. Illuminator comes out to heal me after they run out of cards, and then they just surrender. XD
Mech Mage is a pretty even match-up for me. I just need to Frostbolt the Mechwarpers. The only time I have trouble against Mech Mage is when I have no Turn 1 or Turn 2 plays. This rarely happens though now that I've added Zombie Chow.
The only decks that I have a hard time against are Control Warrior, Handlock and the aforementioned Zoo. Control Warrior stacks armor like mad, making it difficult for me to finish him off with Pyroblast. His removal is also insane, clearing my Arcanists with ease even under Spellbender before they can get to 7/7 (they always seem to open with both Executes and a Death's Bite). Handlock and Zoo win because of their insane draw power. My deck just can't deal with the innate card advantage that Warlock has even with Arcane Intellect in there to help me catch up. I do not know how to shore up that weakness other than by adding in a Flamestrike.
The main thing that I really like about my deck is that it does extremely well against the common Druid meta, boasting a 90% win rate against Druid even without The Black Knight. All of Druid's removal spells are eaten up by my Ethereal Arcanists + Spellbenders + Counterspell so that I can drop Antonidas and Fireball him with impunity until he is within Pyroblast range. Shade of Naxxramas isn't even an issue for me because Ethereal Arcanist snowballs much harder than Shade does, forcing the Druid player to use the Shade to clear the Arcanist after failing to do so with Swipe or Wrath. Then Duplicate activates and I drop two more of them. =) Ice Block has on more than one occasion saved me from the lethal Force of Nature + Savage Roar combo, allowing me to Pyroblast in return for game. Druid match-ups are how I get win streak bonus stars =P
Thats what happens you play the most popular netdeck in the game right now, you run into people who arent stupid.

Hmm, neither constructive nor enlightening. Thanks for trying, feel free to take one more crack at this if you think of something helpful.

Well my advice is dont play mech mage past ranked 5
Well my advice is dont play mech mage past ranked 5
That's slightly more constructive, and also pretty much the thought that spawned this whole thread. With so many people throwing stuff into their deck just to deal with mech, it seems like catching them off guard with freeze mage would be easier. Easier...not easy, obviously still takes time and practice to even hit legendary. I threw together an oil rogue but I need a lot more practice before trying it at rank 5+. Starting to really want to make a freeze mage or some variety of druid.
I agree that the climb you do is from rank 5 to legend. Every deck I have played, even fun decks, get me to rank 5.
And you're hearing this from a very average player. I have never been legend. The best I did was rank 2. One time as priest in the buzzard-unleash meta and one time as control mage(?) some seasons ago.
The thing I disagree is that ranks 5 to legend are control ranks. From the experiences I had, that is where the cancer lies. Rank 5, mostly, is the rank where those facehunters and bad cancer players get stuck.
I see those players playing some deck I also play and geting to legend easily. That freaks me out. I don't think I'm that bad of a player, but seing this I can't help but think I'm the problem.
I think my main problem is geting too tiltet from losing streaks. I'm trying to get a better mindset. It is hard for me to quit after a bad losing streak, but I'm working on that.
I'm rank 5 right now and this time I have time to play. I'll try to go with the mindset plan and see if I can get to legend.
I've been playing rogue(a list with arcane golem and shadowsteps and oil), a list similar to zetalot's medic mage, a echo mage, and some demon warlocks I've made, so far.

There are still a lot of aggro decks at rank 5, but my point was that from 20-5 I ran into maybe 2 control decks. Now I see one every 1-5 games and also see a lot more mid range decks as well.
I pretty much stuck to the first thing I tried and this is my first season, so now with some more knowledge and a few more cards I will probably roll something less cancerous for next season. For now, just gunna ride out the mech train... lol
Played yesterday and managed to get to rank 4. I'm trying to take things slowly and not force myself to climb too much(or else I would have had a losing streak to rank 7 by now lol)
Played against a lot of hunters(hunters mostly, I guess was that senX list) some mech mages and rogues and 1 game against a control warrior and 1 game against a druid.
