[Now updated for S12!]
Hi, my name is CBass and I just reached Legend on EU with this deck.
It's pretty much a standard Paladin list, which has really no bad matchups, except for Rogue. I played it all the way from Rank 5. It does really well against Mech Mage and Hunter, which are the most common decks on the ladder right now. These decks don't run any AoE, so they can't deal with your board efficiently, while you are able to deal with theirs with your weapons and spells.
However, DO NOT play this deck if you're facing a meta dominated by rogues!
Here's proof of Legend:
Mulligans for most common ladder decks:
Top and 2nd Tier mean pretty much always keep this and 3rd Tier means keep if you have something Top Tier.
Mech Mage
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler (deals with Mech Warper), Aldor Peacekeeper
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Consecration (most of their minions have 3 health sadly)
Freeze Mage
There's basically 2 strats against freeze mages and neither one is very consistent, so this is one of the worse matchups for the deck. You either rush them down before they start AoE'ing you, i.e. with Juggler into Muster into Quartermaster into Loatheb, or you wait until they have Alex'd you, Lay on Hands yourself and pray they don't draw Antonidas.
Top Tier: Ironbeak Owl, Loatheb, Truesilver Champion
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Muster for Battle, Shielded Minibot
Face Hunter
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Aldor Peacekeeper, Consecration, Antique Healbot
Midrange Hunter
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl, Aldor Peacekeeper, Consecration
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Harrison Jones
Druid
Top Tier: Aldor Peacekeeper, Truesilver Champion (espacially with Coin), Shielded Minibot
2nd Tier: Zombie Chow, Muster for Battle (weak against Swipe, but if they don't have it - boom)
3rd Tier: Equality, Coghammer, Knife Juggler
Rogue
This matchup is probably the hardest one. They have so much removal and AoE, that they just clear you board every turn. It comes basically down to you praying that they don't have their board clears/card draw and that you can run them out of cards. If they have all their options available while your not able to pressure them, it's really really hard to win.
Top Tier: Truesilver Champion, Piloted Shredder
2nd Tier: Harrison Jones, Loatheb
3rd Tier: Shielded Minibot
Priest
Top Tier: Knife Juggler (deals with Cleric), Aldor Peacekeeper (against Blademaster), Truesilver (deals with Cleric)
2nd Tier: Shielded Minibot, Zombie Chow, Muster for Battle
3rd Tier: Ironbeak Owl, Piloted Shredder
Shaman
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl, Consecration
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin)
Warrior
Top Tier: Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Zombie Chow, Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl, Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Harrison Jones
3rd Tier: Truesilver Champion (without Coin), Aldor Peacekeeper, Piloted Shredder
Paladin
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle, Knife Juggler
2nd Tier: Consecration (against Muster), Coghammer, Harrison Jones (with Coin)
3rd Tier: Harrison Jones (without Coin)
Handlock
Top Tier: Aldor Peacekeeper, Ironbeak Owl, Big Hame Hunter
2nd Tier: Shielded Minibot, Equality
3rd Tier: Truesilver Champion, Loatheb
If you have any other matchups you'd like to know the mulligans for, just let me know in the comment section and I'll add them :)
I would replace your whole deck for an aggro paladin then.
I know Harrison is really useful in this deck but what are some useful alternatives for him?
i lack him to. im thinking of putting in either another belcher to keep with the mana cost or acidic swamp ooze for the anti-weapon effect, or go with antique healbot for 8 heal.
Obviously I'm not the creator but Acidic Swamp Ooze.
I've found this to be true except against Rogue, where it feels like keeping Harrison Jones to blow up one of their oil weapons they have on standby towards the endgame is the only way I can pull of a win. I've only made it to rank 3 so far though and have sort of plateau-ed around 4-5. Any other thoughts on the rogue match up?
Nice deck ;) from rank 4 to legendary in one day
Want to rank for me xD <3
I find it interesting, that I would lose a game against a Face Hunter, only to then win the next two games in a row against Freeze Mage, one of the toughest matchups you say. Loving the deck, nice work on the Mulligan info!
Edit: I also beat the first Rogue I ran into. He didn't have the AoE only when he needed it most.
How about mulligan guides for Zoolock and Handlock?
Since Febuary 3rd I have been stuck at rank 8 using a control style paladin, I tried this midrange deck and am shocked! It is unreal how consistent it is for having so many one of each card. I am not sure wtf you all are doing to not be over 55% winrate but it is very viable IMO. DO NOT be afraid to use coghammer on a mini-bot or even a token as you want tempo with this deck. After playing 25 games I also realized that often you have to destroy a weapon ( OBV not truesilver , but the rest yes ) to gain tempo.
I went from 48% winrate with deck to 58% winrate by doing these two things. I use to hold on to coghammer hoping to get a decent minion to buff up but realized through trial & error that is not wat to do. I will even buff up a token guy if I get the chance, I will also destroy a coghammer with two charges if it means equipping a truesilver to kill an enemy minion.
I've been playing the same deck -Coghammer - Defender of Argus + Zombie Chow + Sludge Belcher currently rank 2 definitely a very viable deck to legend.
Are you still playing this deck to success? Currently rank 5 NA and swapped to combo druid. I wasn't necessarily doing poor with my midrange Pally, it just lost some appeal with the uproar of rogues.
Since people are getting smarter on how to play around Mind Control Tech (or since you're probably dead if you don't get the right steal from MCT), would it be wise to swap it out for a Blood Knight?
Damn Annoy-a-Tron and Enhance-o-Mechano are everywhere these days, especially with Mech Mage, Mech Shaman, and Mech Rogue. We might as well fight back with Blood Knight.
Of course, if you wanted to draw Blood Knight more consistently, could we take out BGH for a second Blood Knight? Or, would that be too much of a tradeoff?
Great deck! Just wondering if you could do a class mulligan for Freeze Mage? Thanks!
This deck feels more balanced then other Pally decks that I have seen. The only card I feel is out of place is Defender of Argus. I am going to try different subs for it.
You never felt the need for more heal? I mean, Guardian of Kings could be an interesting addition, in place of other tech card, besides providing a great late game body
Sunwalker in a pinch, but I'd go with a fatty neutral as well.
Deck is nice but too expensive
Probably a second Sludge Belcher
Acidic Swamp Ooze
