[Now updated for S12!]
Hi, my name is CBass and I just reached Legend on EU with this deck.
It's pretty much a standard Paladin list, which has really no bad matchups, except for Rogue. I played it all the way from Rank 5. It does really well against Mech Mage and Hunter, which are the most common decks on the ladder right now. These decks don't run any AoE, so they can't deal with your board efficiently, while you are able to deal with theirs with your weapons and spells.
However, DO NOT play this deck if you're facing a meta dominated by rogues!
Here's proof of Legend:
Mulligans for most common ladder decks:
Top and 2nd Tier mean pretty much always keep this and 3rd Tier means keep if you have something Top Tier.
Mech Mage
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler (deals with Mech Warper), Aldor Peacekeeper
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Consecration (most of their minions have 3 health sadly)
Freeze Mage
There's basically 2 strats against freeze mages and neither one is very consistent, so this is one of the worse matchups for the deck. You either rush them down before they start AoE'ing you, i.e. with Juggler into Muster into Quartermaster into Loatheb, or you wait until they have Alex'd you, Lay on Hands yourself and pray they don't draw Antonidas.
Top Tier: Ironbeak Owl, Loatheb, Truesilver Champion
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Muster for Battle, Shielded Minibot
Face Hunter
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Aldor Peacekeeper, Consecration, Antique Healbot
Midrange Hunter
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl, Aldor Peacekeeper, Consecration
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Harrison Jones
Druid
Top Tier: Aldor Peacekeeper, Truesilver Champion (espacially with Coin), Shielded Minibot
2nd Tier: Zombie Chow, Muster for Battle (weak against Swipe, but if they don't have it - boom)
3rd Tier: Equality, Coghammer, Knife Juggler
Rogue
This matchup is probably the hardest one. They have so much removal and AoE, that they just clear you board every turn. It comes basically down to you praying that they don't have their board clears/card draw and that you can run them out of cards. If they have all their options available while your not able to pressure them, it's really really hard to win.
Top Tier: Truesilver Champion, Piloted Shredder
2nd Tier: Harrison Jones, Loatheb
3rd Tier: Shielded Minibot
Priest
Top Tier: Knife Juggler (deals with Cleric), Aldor Peacekeeper (against Blademaster), Truesilver (deals with Cleric)
2nd Tier: Shielded Minibot, Zombie Chow, Muster for Battle
3rd Tier: Ironbeak Owl, Piloted Shredder
Shaman
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl, Consecration
3rd Tier: Coghammer (with Chow or Minibot), Truesilver Champion (with Coin)
Warrior
Top Tier: Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle
2nd Tier: Zombie Chow, Knife Juggler, Ironbeak Owl, Truesilver Champion (with Coin), Harrison Jones
3rd Tier: Truesilver Champion (without Coin), Aldor Peacekeeper, Piloted Shredder
Paladin
Top Tier: Zombie Chow, Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle, Knife Juggler
2nd Tier: Consecration (against Muster), Coghammer, Harrison Jones (with Coin)
3rd Tier: Harrison Jones (without Coin)
Handlock
Top Tier: Aldor Peacekeeper, Ironbeak Owl, Big Hame Hunter
2nd Tier: Shielded Minibot, Equality
3rd Tier: Truesilver Champion, Loatheb
If you have any other matchups you'd like to know the mulligans for, just let me know in the comment section and I'll add them :)
RIP this deck :c
First game i played:
Coin
Zombie Chow
knife Jugular
Muster
Shielded Minibot
AMAZING!!!!!!!
I went 9-2 with this deck
I don't have Harrison Jones or Coghammer so since the BRM release, I teched in a Dragon Consort + a Ysera. The strong 5 drop alone is a good body but getting an early Ysera can end games.
I'm running a more aggro variant:
-1 Sylvanas +1 Avenging Wrath
-1 Antique Healbot +1 Captain Greenskin
-1 Defender of Argus +1 Argent Protector
-1 Loatheb +1 Sludge Belcher
Playing a more aggressive build. I'll admit I'm trying very hard to make Greenskin work. Greenskin + Avenging Wrath allow for a more aggressive play style. Argent Protector helps take the early board, Sludge Belcher helps you stay there. The deck can be played more aggressively, especially with Coghammer, because of Avenging Wrath and Argent Protector. Argent Protector comes down with a hero power, saving a minion and applying Quartermaster pressure.
What can I replace Tirion with?
I was thinking about Ragnaros/Kel'Thuzad.
Any suggestions would be great ^^.
Sneed's Old Shredder would be a fine replacement
I played this deck a couple of weeks ago, and it did pretty well, but not great. I picked it up again yesterday, and it's doing really well. I made a few changes, though, based on current meta:
-1 Zombie Chow: Most needed vs. mech mage and face hunter, which accounts for 5 out of my 22 last games. One is fine, the second one is usually a dead card.
-1 Coghammer: Good value card, but in addition to what Llynok wrote, this is another card that is most needed vs the two aggro matchups. Even in those matchups, it's not that great because you can't really afford the hp to trade, and you often don't have minions on the board to use with battlecry.
-1 Harrison Jones Not good in this meta
-1 Loatheb Not good in this meta
-1 Dr. Boom Literally everyone is running BGH. This is the only card with 7+ attack
+1 Equality As a replacement for 2nd chow, this is surprisingly good vs aggro as well as control. Vs mech mage you can pull off a desperate turn 3 eq turn 4 concecrate, and the card will be relevant the entire game.
+1 Sludge Belcher Too good to pass up on.
+1 The Black Knight Works in current meta
+1 Sneed's Old Shredder Trying out instead of Dr. Boom. Is a bit slow, but makes up for it by soaking up a lot of silences for Tirion Fordring
Just wanted to say that this guide really helped me tighten up my midrange Pally deck I've been working on!
In particular, the mulligan guides for each class were super helpful as Pally is the one class I've never really played in constructed before.
On the advice of a friend, I tried using Kel'Thuzad to gain some card advantage against other midrange and control decks, and I have to say he can be devastating in this deck when played at the right time. Obviously a dead card against aggro, but I really feel the ability to flat-out win slower games is worth it.
Differences with my deck:
-1 Coghammer Isn't great if you don't get a 1 or 2 drop to stick in front of it and there's a lot of weapons already in this deck.
-1 Mind Control Tech MC Tech is fine, I just find I generally keep board well enough with this deck that I am rarely facing 4 minions on the other side.
-1 Harrison Jones I don't have Harrison and indeed Rogues are brutal without him, but this is a terrible matchup regardless.
-1 Quartermaster Quartermaster is just too often a dead card; it's really hard to activate two.
+1 Kel'Thuzad See above
+1 Equality Also great against control, and actually I find this is useful against mech mage.
+1 Earthen Ring Farseer Found I needed a 3 drop, and I guess I find this more versatile than MC Tech.
+1 Antique Healbot Helpful for surviving the last gasps of aggro decks.
Again thanks for this guide! Really helped me start to figure out Pally.
Am I the only one who isn't seeing much value out of MCT? How often do you really see 4+ minions vs just playing it as a naked 3/3. In my last 20 games using it, I haven't never once played it as anything more than a 3/3.
I have another question. I'm also trying to rank up on EU, what would best replace Loatheb, Sledge Belcher and Zombie Chow?
First and foremost I'd like to say the Nax cards are very special. I highly recommend buying into it eventually simply because it opens the door to a lot of different decks.
A general thumbs up rule when substituting cards is always look at the deck is lacking.
Example: Acidic Swamp Ooze does not replace Harrison Jones
Kobold Geomancer does not replace Bloodmage Thalnos
The Black Knight does replace Harrison Jones since it would better fit the deck to fight taunt decks like druids in expense of being weaker to weapon classes.
Replacing (Subs are assume that no Nax is unlocked):
This deck primarily lacks card draw. So you can use Acolyte of Pain. This also is a good synergy with Aldor Peacekeeper.
Without Zombie Chow and Sludge Belcher, this deck is very weak to aggro. So you could use Sen'jin Shieldmasta or Sunwalker or Antique Healbot. Even more removals like Avenging Wrath could do as well.
If you see that you are losing a lot to a certain strategy or class, chances are there is some sort of card that can fix that up. It really is about experimenting with cards little by little.
If you want some sort of starting point I would say...
-1 Loatheb
+1 The Black Knight
(I say this because this makes control match ups even better, but now the deck is a bit weaker rogue and other spell heavy decks)
-1 Sludge Belcher
+1 Antique Healbot
(Sludge Belcher is a very very unique taunt that survives almost everything. Since Sludge Belcher is primarily used to fight aggro, Antique Healbot would be OK..
-1Zombie Chow
+1Kezan Mystic
(Since the deck lacks Sludge Belcher and Zombie Chow, Kezan Mystic would fight the most common aggro decks right now, hunter and mage.)
Using this variation of the deck would mean you would be more draw dependent on Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle, and Coghammer against aggro. Again the lesson here is that experimentation is best when subbing cards. Take my hypothetical subs with a grain of salt.
I wanted to say that I did to Legend with this deck starting from 4. I did modify the deck-list slightly.
-1 Harrison Jones
-1Defender of Argus
+1Antique Healbot
+1Sludge Belcher
IMO Harrison Jones would've been much better, but I lack Harrison Jones. Antique Healbot certainly made fighting mech mage and hunter a lot easier.
As for the sub of Defender of Argus for Sludge Belcher,
--Defender of Argus requires a minion to be out, so tends to be a bit more situational (Harder to play vs aggro IMO) (rouges can just Blade Flurry taunts from Defender of Argus, though Sludge Belcher is more vulnerable to Sap)
--Sludge Belcher is very sticky and makes fighting aggro a lot easier. (Forces a Kill Command almost every single time.
--Sludge Belcher also protects the Silver Hand Recruit for a threatening Quartermaster the following turn.
---I also rather have 2x of something than a bunch of 1x.
Some Rules:
Some general tips I have are:
1. The mulligan guides he provides is a great thumbs up rule vs classes
2. Vs. Tinker Rouge, Get rid of theViolet Teacher ASAP. Don't play Muster for Battle unless you can Quartermaster OR you are probably certain Fan of Knives isn't in his or her hand. This match-up is very very hard (especially without Harrison Jones)
3. Against Hunter. IMO it is OK to keep Antique Healbot in opening hand. I never had a situation where I wasn't glad to draw that at some point. You also play your cards very quickly. It is OK to Aldor Peacekeeper something with 2 attack. You just need stuff to respond to his or her stuff. Overall I've had a pretty high winrate against hunters, and I only narrowly lost due to health. Play your health very conservatively.
4. Coghammer is your best friend. This card is one of the most important cards IMO. I've had Shielded Minibot kill three creatures against aggro, and Loatheb kill an Ancient of Lore.
5. One thing I did find very important about Zombie Chow was it was a great way to activate Mirror Entity later in the game. It also usually wrecks whatever Hunters play first turn.
EDIT: Lots of spelling fix and adding links to cards
Thinking of trying this out, is there any replacement for Zombie Chow? 'Cause I've only unlocked first 2 wings of naxx
i would say Argent Squire
Ok thanks for the tip, gonna try this deck out ^.^
Still added an avenging wrath an extra eq but other than that thx for updateing my pally deck :). I named the deck Cbass Inspires Us All gj man!!
I played this deck for a while and am curious about the lack of silence in your list. In particular, having no silence AND no black knight seems to make you pretty unfavored in the paladin mirror, since you have absolutely no way to handle tirion (aside from killing him and harrison-ing the weapon). Is this something you have thought about/I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.
I mention this only because, in my tweaking of the deck I came to a list somewhat like this, played a couple games against paladin, immediately realized that I couldn't beat Tirion, and added in an owl. Haven't really regretted it since.
Bolvar Fordragon works excellent in this deck, after a couple of musters and an opponent who just wasted a lot of removal on your earlier minions, dropping a 9-15/7 minion on the board tends to be instant concedes. If you're patient, this card can be just as worthwhile as a second Quartermaster, as an efficient reaction to a Muster for Battle can turn out to be their undoing.
I don't have Dr. Boom, Sylvanas or BGH, whats a good replacement for them?
Okay thanks! I will try and get Dr.B and Sylv slowly but I'll DE some cards for the BGH
