Warning: Since this deck has appeared on the front page of hearthpwn, people have been avidly avoiding Mutanus. Steer clear of this deck for a while until people let their guard down again.
Hi I've been around a while and all I do is play Shaman.
I won 12 games in a row with this deck. I screwed over several mages and warlocks because of Mutanus. Mutanus the Devourer. You can get an advantage in the mirror matchup in about 30% of your games.
Do not rely on Mutanus against rogues, warriors, or demon hunters. They all have cheap options for getting their quest completed and played in the same turn. Every other class is fair game.
Do not overload on 6 against quest decks. There is a bizarre occurrence of mages being vulnerable to having their quest devoured, but warlocks are much less likely to be vulnerable because they can cheat mana.
If you want to increase Mutanus' chances of eating the quest minion, then make a dangerous play before they finish their quest. Playing a Charged Call and getting a little lucky with a threatening statline will increase your chances of the opponent spending mana to remove it instead of mana to play the quest legendary. This is easier to do with Elemental Shaman because those decks have healthier minions, but it's achievable with this deck as well.
This deck removes Diligent Notetaker in favour of Overdraft and Mutanus the Devourer. It may be because of my playstyle, but I had significantly more success avoiding that Notetaker altogether. It's excellent if you want to keep Doomhammer or Al'Akir the Windlord in your deck instead of Mutanus the Devourer because of the potential for discovering Stormstrike and Rockbiter Weapon.
As it stands, those cards are all cluttery nonsense filling your hand against mages and warlocks. I'd rather have an ace in the hole than a defective nuke in the hardest matchups for Shaman players since the deathrattle hunter meta in 2015.
Mulligans are the same for every opponent except mages and warlocks. You keep the quest and low-cost overload cards against all opponents, but you also keep Mutanus the Devourer against mages and warlocks. It's worth keeping. Have faith. Dream big. Do not Mulligan your win condition.
Aggressively overload even if you have to lightning bolt your opponent in the face. Try and save at least one Charged Call until after you play Stormcaller Bru-kan
WARNING: Sometimes Mutanus is a dead card.
Got Legend with this today. Great list! Thanks.
grats
I have been running mutanus since day 1 of the expansion in nearly every deck I play and only eaten the quest reward like twice so yeah
I've eaten between 30-40 since the stormwind update.
Played 7 games, 1 game I ate Ilgy'noth and further I didn't eat the reward
Never managed a single time to pull that out vs warlock.
1. They have other minions that can be targeted
2. They have so many cards that cost health instead of mana that they play the legendary on the same turn they complete the quest
You've just been lucky
Every win for every player has been a bit lucky for the last few years in hearthstone. I'd still rather have a chance to win vs warlock then none. If you find a quest variant that's consistent vs warlock, please let me know.
No quest shaman just can’t beat warlock if not with tremendous luck. Maybe after the nerf but I have little hope
I've found that adding 2x "Robes of Protection" to almost any deck ups the winrate significantly. This is due to all the single target in a lot of the the main metadecks. Is it as effective as snagging their quest minion? No. But it's a much more constant way to get an upper hand, in my opinion.
I think I'd have to swap Marshspawn to fit those in.
Cute idea. I like it. I've tried to put Mutanus into some of my decks but find most of the time he isn't getting enough value. But on the occasions where he does eat something good, it feels great.
Just curious, wouldn't Diligent Notetaker still be better than Pandaren Importer? Notetaker ensures you get back a spell that you put in your deck, which is going to be one you want... since you put it in your deck. Is there some other reason for this choice?
Totally valid playstyle and I'm a huge proponent of other people finding ways to make Diligent Notetaker work for them.
Pandaren Importer keeps me off my back foot. It happens for two reasons;
The first is that overloading on turn 2 feels gross with the other cards in my deck. There's more value in unlocking my mana with 4 or 5 overloaded crystals on turn 4, after board clearing with Perpetual Flame. It's less awkward to achieve valuable overload on the turn you unlock your crystals if you don't overload on 2.
If Quest Shaman has poor solutions in a matchup, then I have a chance at a way out. Shaman have plenty of excellent removal spells to fall back on and it's beneficial to have options outside your deck composition rather than just copying a spell. Many opponents are familiar with your deck, and will be vulnerable to cards they don't think you have. That's an understated playstyle I rely on. See for example: Mutanus :)
Fair enough. Those are good reasons.
Cheers :)
Wow, this is brilliant
