While being the highest achievement in HS, for all those who have been playing this game for a long time it's no longer a great sense of accomplishment as it only requires you to invest a lot of your time and understand the basics of the game, as well as a brief meta knowledge.
Don't get me wrong, it's pretty hard to get legend for the first time. It's just that it isn't hard enough to be the summit of all your HS career, and I'm pretty sure that all of you who play other competitive games will agree with this one.
Many people have already complain about the rewards (or rather the lack of) you get after reaching legend, making all the grind pointless for most of us. However, I think there's a bigger issue. The people who reached legend usually already have a decent collection to work with. Yeah, extra rewards are always welcome, but they're not as appealing as they are for the new players or at least they don't make up for all the time invested, also considering that there's only 1 golden common of difference between rank 5 and legend chest.
When you've been playing a game for such a long time, it's no longer that entertaining to play it just because. You need a new challenge that HS doesn't provide. Obviously it cannot be "getting to top X". How many people who don't play HS for a living can actually aim for such thing?
What in my opinion this game actually need is something more challenging than getting legend that requires even less time.
Don't really agree. "Legend is only about time, no skill" is becoming such a boring untrue cliche.
Yes it requires time, but it is still a feat that requires skill. I like the fact that the pinnacle achievement of the game is manageable without playing several hours a day. If I wanted a game that required so many hours a day, there are plenty other alternatives to sink time into.
Well I actually said that getting legend does require skill and it's pretty hard. My point is that it's not hard enough to be the pinnacle of a competitive game. Of course you can argue that achieving a good legend rank it's the really challenging part, but people who don't play HS professionally usually don't have the time to spend first to get legend and second to get to a high rank. Casual but still veteran people may feel (as it is in my case) that HS doesn't provide the challenge they would like.

Very well put. It is a fallacy that time invested = legend. People can (and have) played 500+ games in a season and failed to make legend, even though most people who make it to Rank5 have pretty solid understanding of the game. On the flipside, you have guys like Kolento, Strifecro, Savji, Xixo, etc who can make legend within hours, holding an amazing winrate. Sometimes streaking up to 30 wins back to back. You can't say that's not skill.
Is it really too much to ask that every player who reaches gets a free pleb legendary (not gold)? I mean come on just one random legendary if you reach legend and maybe like 400 dust or something! Blizzards reward system is really bad right now imo. Reaching legend feels like it means nothing for sure but I'm not sure if it really does mean that. Besides the fact that anyone now days can reach it by spamming broken decks that don't take much skill and people use bots, besides that there is some merit to reaching legend and it does take a little bit of skill.
I have the feeling that people is only reading the title and skipping my whole post. It's long I know, but it would be greatly appreciated. My bad english may hurt your eyes though.
If you want a harder goal than reaching legend, try and get a 12-win arena with all 9 classes. You won’t get a fancy cardback, but it’s a very satisfying achievement IMO.
Hearthstone needs these two things to satisfy competitive players: 1) Tournament mode: more satisfying than climbing legend ranks IMO. 2) Grandmaster League: there are too many people in legend now, so it doesn’t feel special. There needs to be a special league for the top 200-500 people in each region.

Yea I wish they would do that but Blizzard is REALLY stingy with giving out legendaries. Even with a 12 win arena, you are given only the "chance" to score a legendary. If I'm not mistaken I herd somewhere that Blizzard values a legendary to be worth roughly $29USD. I recall there being a discussion about making legendary card purchasable long ago and they decided against it.
Meh, Legend just takes some face rolling on your keyboard with aggro until rank 5 and then a decent meta deck vs whatever the Tier 1 is, this month it seems like it's Patron Warrior vs Freeze/Combo Druid/Secret Paladin/Zoo, after that it's more about the march to Top 100 in Legend ranks that shows serious commitment to the game. I'm sitting at Rank 3 at the moment due to a lack of time, and I can't say it's really that much worse than the average legend player.
Well... yes I have. That's the premise of my post. Not as proud as I would like to be able to claim it, since legend means nothing nowadays. You're fine with the challenge that it supposes for you? Perfect, then this topic is not for you.

I don't doubt you at all Thyndd, but can you please provide a screenshot of your legend cardback? I'm sure you wouldn't make that up, I just think a screenshot would provide validity. Since your online right now, it shouldn't take you longer than a couple minutes. Thanks.

I put "I'm Thyndd" as the deck title. Anything else?
Nope, your good : )
Nice. I don't mean to be rude at all, neither I mean to despise the effort people make to get legend. That's not my intention at all. I'm just saying that the fact that I can reach legend consistently while knowing that I can still improve a lot at this game, as well as 10k people getting legend every month means that it's not that big of a challenge anymore.
Is really the legend rank deserving the top in difficulty when so many (not that good) players can get it with ease every month just dedicating enough time? I'm not saying that getting legend should be like getting the GM title in chess, but...
It's just that it isn't hard enough to be the summit of all your HS career, and I'm pretty sure that all of you who play other competitive games will agree with this one.

My only real issue with this post is the bold part. I have left some other bits in to show why. It seems that you want something hard that doesn't require spending time. Other than Heroic Adventure bosses (or a similar style of challenge) I'm not sure how you could create something difficult in HS without requiring time spent.
Even ignoring the time part (assuming that that is less of your argument than simply wanting something harder than Legend - based on the first paragraph I've left in the quote), surely automatically discounting the ranking system within Legend is like saying "I really want to be warmer. Obviously turning on a heater can't be the solution though" or "I really wish the car would start. Obviously turning the key can't be the solution" or similar. I understand that there is no reward associated with high rank legend (with the exception of global tournament ranking points, which I assume is your reason for discounting it), but if you want to reach the "summit of all your HS career" then just record the highest rank you reach in a given month, or your fastest route/highest winrate to legend. If either or both improves then hey, you're still progressing up your HS career, and have something measurable to show your return on your HS time investment.

you mean PROS? people who are professional and play this game all day?
Was just outside the top 20 at one point last month and wouldnt of played more than 2 hours a day. Not that this was the intention of the post but people in the thread seem to be really confused on what it takes to achieve high rank legend.
Counter to that ive played a similar amount of games this month and only rank 4 still. Luck and matchups is still a big part of this game too

Do you agree? I'm just dumb? Let me know =)
Here is my idea.
Each month the players who achieve legend play a tournament. Top X in the tournament advance for a change to go to worlds
I've gotten legend almost every month in the past year.
This month I've played 100 games and I'm rank 17
I keep getting bad draws/bad matchups
It's like the game turned on me?

the truth is that ladder is becoming more and more boring each month.
first you have no reason to waste that much time to reach legend, unless you are 12 years old and have all day to play the game.
second not worth the time you waste, since getting to rank 5 is anough for the chest prize.
third you just gonna play against the same decks over and over and over and over and over.
its not even fun.
