Hello fellow Hearthpwn casuals (I'm casual) and pros. I recently decided to start an Asia and EU account on hearthstone and honestly was struck on how building one's card collection can be very challenging as well as frustrating on what card(s) to make first. My goal for the long haul is to have a copy of each card(s) so I don't have worry about what decks I can and can not make BUT for now here are the 5 cards that I found are extremely helpful in the start of a new account/region.
Note: These cards are just opinion and for another players taste may not be as valuable.
The crafting of these cards is also based on two factors: Dust cost and versatility for different deck archetypes.
1. Ironbeak Owl40 dust, Common. Works well in an assortment of Warlock, Paladin and Hunter decks. A silence for two mana even if you are playing just one is a very strong tech card. The 2/1 body is not much but as said the effect is super strong.
2.Piloted Shredder 40 dust, Common. Works In just about every deck type but is super strong in Mage and Druid. This card not only has decent stats for it mana cost but gives you a variety of secondary minions who can have good stats as well. Don't think about it...it is worth 80 dust I swear. This guy is another reason I find Ironbeak Owl so great to get/create.
3.Big Game Hunter 400 dust, Epic. This card is very tech oriented and works in an array of Warrior, Warlock, Druid and Paladin decks. Since it is a heavy tech card (and costly too), creating 1 is all you need. Three mana for a 4/2 body is ok but the effect it does by killing a 7 Attack minion is an incredible effect for it's cost. This as you know also kills most epics including "Dr. Balance".
4. Knife Juggler 100 dust, Rare. This guy has a nice place for mid-range and Aggro decks making him loved and hated in equal proportion (although I would guess it is more on the hated side). Preforms well in Hunter, warlock and Paladin decks. 3/2 body for two mana is good but the ability to deal 1 damage for every minion you play as long as he stays alive is just insane value.
5. Azure Drake 100 dust, Rare. This card has multiple applications. Works in Rogue, Shaman, Druid, Priest and Mage. It works extremely well in Druid (you would almost think it is a druid card itself). 5 mana for a 4/4 itself would not be great but when you take on the fact that you get this body with a +1 spell damage and drawing a card, well now we are talking. I can see this card very debatable whether it is a necessity to craft or not, I tend to feel it is.
Total dust cost: 960, still 640 less dust for one Legendary card!
I hope this will be helpful for those who are new or are starting a new account in another region. I would also like to add that this list is not in any order of importance and if you want or have a more specific card in mind to craft first then do it. :D What do you think the first cards you should craft are? Please let me know/discuss in the comments below.
special Note: If you are wondering what legendary to craft first yes, you are correct it should be Dr. Boom.
Dr. Boom [/card] Unless you're playing a pure face deck, you play this. [card]Piloted Shredder - Again, goes in every deck, makes it better. Big Game Hunter [/card]- The dumbest universal counter card in the game. Again can go as a 1x in any deck.
These 3 are total no brainers. Anything else is debatable.
[card]Sylvannas Windrunner - A decent card you can mash into most midrange/control decks to somewhat improve it. Ragnaros [/card]- An ok card to put in your slower decks.
That's the top 5 for just all-purpose cards that you're likely to be able to play in any deck / class.
If it's just commons, it really depends on your deck.

Yeah, I'll have to say this list seems pretty solid. I was thinking about Abusive sergeant, but he will only see play in aggro and midrange decks (the ones I like to play best). Although there would be an argument that a beginner would probably not have the dust for a control deck...
Thanks for the replys folks. I never thought about a ratio of cost on cards. That is a very excellent point when consider any of them. I guess I find that there has been a few cards that I found valuable enough that I was ok to craft but this point made is something for all of us to consider. so again thanks for the on point topic in this discussion.
I absolutely disagree about "never crafting commons". Sure, it should be avoided, but as a begginer, after you farmed all the gold and packs you get to kick you off... yeah, you'll still have very little, you'll have to improvise decks to get those daily missions done. I recently started an EU account and the best thing I did was to get a lot of GvG packs, as there aren't as many card as in classic, you WILL get a lot of synergy from mechs and those can be used to build decent decks for any class. But even dedicating to GvG I didn't get the second shredder, second mechanical yeti and one or other relevant cards... hell yeah I crafted them and in no time I was playing mech mage w/o legendaries and doing pretty well.
It's not EXCELLENT to craft commons, but sometimes it's just worth it. There are tons of bad commons in classic, it might very well take some time until you open one that you really need.
Interesting thread. I like OPs picks, but I have to echo what a few posters have said. I started an alt FTP account last month and the best advice I can give is start with a low cost deck and build it out a bit. Then, as you earn gold and packs, see what RNG gives you for cards and based on the cards you get start working on another deck or two.
Once you have two decks that you are happy with to start - then consider crafting options. At that point you could craft a common or rare that you really need for the decks.
I would never advise players to craft common or rares. It's such a waste of dust...
Well...
For VERY new players, the first priority is to get a deck that doesn't absolutely, completely SUCK. Given that you cannot make such a deck purely off of just random card packs, new players DO have to craft a few commons/rares to get started.
The SECOND they have a deck that's half decent, however, then it should STOP. Thus the "top 16 cards of each type" is too much, but a short 'top 5' list is pretty ok.
Though honestly I prefer a flat out 'F2P' deck for new players to focus on. Just give them a starting deck they can play with so that they can QUICKLY get out of the "got ot craft this common" phase.

I would generally agree with this. In the beginning you can get few hundred gold from quests that will give you some free arena runs, packs and you'll get a couple more packs from something like the tavern brawl and so you'll get a bunch of packs to make something better than basic deck, and for new players it really doesn't matter what deck you play between ranks 25-15. If you want the fastest collection of all good cards you should keep crafting the ones that are the hardest to get from packs.
At this point in the HS expansion saga new players should craft a few crucial cheap-ass cards like Shredder to get a decent starting deck. After that you can start to collect and only craft crucial epics and legionaries for what you want to play.
This was my general Idea for that was driving me on my EU account. There has been some really good prospective on what may or may not be for card crafting. Thanks so much for the good conversation on this post folks. BUT YES there is an idea of card gain and loss ratio that was mentioned when deciding to whether to construct or not that is very interesting when going forward.

Good list :) I would add 1X Antique Healbot as a priority craft.
Dr. Boom [/card] Unless you're playing a pure face deck, you play this.
[card]Piloted Shredder - Again, goes in every deck, makes it better.
Big Game Hunter [/card]- The dumbest universal counter card in the game. Again can go as a 1x in any deck.

Well first, craft [card]2x piloted shredder, because that card is stupid.
Then you have choices:
Abusive Sergeant, Ironbeak Owl, Loot Hoarder are all great face cards
Argent Squire, Harvest Golem and Dark Iron Dwarf are great tempo/midrange cards
Acolyte of Pain and Antique Healbot are good control cards.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - Sneak Review! http://www.thepoxbox.com/challenges.php?id=batmanvsuperman
Agree on all picks.

shredder should be number 1.

It all must depend on player game style, if player prefer aggro so he don`t need Big Game Hunter and maybe Azure Drake
Control - without Knife Juggler
First card to craft - Dr. Boom )))
Topdeck master
BOOM, BGH, Shredder
solid list, but dr boom has to be in there somewhere.

I think top 1 of the list is shredder, I think I include it in almost all my decks, and I need to craft boom :s
Also sludge beltcher is another card that is very important
Maybe... nah nah nah nah

One does not simply walk into Mordor,
unless they want to be the best they can be.
