This might not really matter to much I guess, but personally rank 5 and above is just you sorta looking at the screen playing the cards but really your doing something else, and at rank 5 and below you actually start trying to do the right plays and win.
Even at rank 6-7 you see some wonky decks (and classes) which occasionally give you cheap wins, but that is also completely gone below rank 5. Its probably as people have previously said before, its a combination of tryhardism, nothing but solid decks and no win streaks.
So, rank 5 and above is where the grind truly begins? Is that what I'm hearing? I started in March and hit 5, then in April hit 5, now in May, I've topped out at 5 again. Started watching pro streams and trying to decide on the play before they played it and 95% of the time, it was the same. The other 5% sometimes they were better and sometimes I was better. So is it just a matter of grinding after this point?

There are 3 kinds of people in the world. Those that can count and those that can't.
In my experience i would say yes. Unless you have enough time to play hundreds of games each month you will probably end up around Rank 5 every time. As previous messages stated it, once Rank 5 there is no more winning streak bonus so if you're playing a deck with above 5O% winning chances overall you will end up in Legendary Ranking as long as you play enough games.
Took me about 170 games to reach legend, which IMO should be doable within a month by most people. Its really just about motivation and whether or not you can be assed to grind your way up the ranks. Probably 80-100 of those games were at rank 2 or above though, so rank 3 should at least be doable.

@SirGamesalot what decks did you use in rank 10 to rank 5 and in rank 4 to rank 1??

I know you asked SirGamesalot, but I'll offer my experience and found a lot of success with Kolento's Token Druid from Rank 14 -> 5/4.
Also, since posting this thread, I've found a second wind by playing Shaman - it seems like a great 'all-comers' solution (esp. since there's not much Miracle Rogue or Hunter around at the moment)
For me the game really starts at rank 5. Below rank 5 people still make huge mistakes you can capitalize on. At rank 5+ people still make minor mistakes but their play is overall more solid, making it much more important for you to play optimally. Getting to legend is pretty tough, but it's also very satisfying, especially your first time.

I'm so glad there is prejudice against playing hunter/zoo/[insert FotM deck here]. People like that make the life so much easier for those of us who play to win.

I used pretty much the same shaman deck all the way from the start, except that I used different variations as the meta changed. There has been a lot of experimenting with different cards and such, but the main difference in the meta (at least when I played) is that there was a lot of warriors b4 rank 5, so I ran an ooze, and after r5 it was more zoolocks and miracles so I ran a harvest golem. I feel like shaman is pretty solid in the current meta, it doesn't really stomp anything (except for maybe warrior) but it has a solid chance to win in pretty much any match up. It also didn't really seem to matter that much what cards I swapped in and out, as the games were usually decided by the matchups, the draws and the plays and not so much the deck itself. I ran the Al'akir version of shaman.
Yeah, my friend and I are both also perennial rank 4-6. At rank 5 its a zero sum game, so essentially the extra stars being "created" at rank 6 are the only things feeding people into higher ranks.
before rank 5, a 50% winner will see a 1/8th star gain per game. To see the same level of gain at rank 5, you would need to be a 56% winner, which doesnt sound like a big jump, but it is actually reasonably huge due to the high level of variance, and the small difference in skill between players. Even if you are a 56% winner, that still means 200 games (112 wins) to get from 5 to legend.
If you dont play a lot, to some degree you need to just get lucky to hit legendary.
I'm at rank 5 now and just dont have any motivation attempt to hit legendary. I'm really not interested in grinding my way up and prefer to enjoy a couple of games a day rather than playing all day.
Maybe it might change in the future and i might try for legend but for now i'm happy where i am and can show off my rank to all my battle.net friends who are all so much lower than me :D
It's well designed in my opinion. If you aren't hitting more than 50% than you aren't entitled to advance anymore than everyone else at your level. Remember that for every game won there is a game lost and someone else drifting further away from legend.
I hit rank 5 last night for the first time, started playing last month where I reached rank 9 so I have improved. I am playing a miracle rogue and it has done really well for me getting to this point but like previously posted at 5 the struggle is high. I have found it pretty tough running into Handlocks and zoo after that and the occasional burn mage. Should I persist with this deck as I am not seeing rogue so much right now or should I move to Shaman or even zoo to try get to legend. I played Zoo last season so know the ins and outs, I just don't really enjoy playing it, the miracle still gives me a thrill when I pull it off but I would like to try hit legend. I probably have about 30 hours to play till months end, what should I do to increase the possibility of reaching it?
I just did the math and found out I had about a 58-59% winrate, and it took me a good 140-145 games from rank 5 to legend. Even if you have a better win rate than me, you would still probably have to play at least over 125 games from rank 5 to legend. It really is quite grindy. If you want to get legend without a lot of time you would have to have an insane win rate, which is unlikely in a game with as much RNG as HS. if you just played ranked consistently every day you could probably do it, but I generally find that playing ranked is something that is best done in a few long gaming sessions, and most people only really have time for that in the weekends.

In my opinion miracle, shaman and handlock and aggressive druids can beat any deck in the game, so as long as you're playing one of those four decks you should be fine. Just play what you enjoy and try learning how to improve your bad matchups by watching high legend streamers with the same deck.

It's good to know its taking people 140+ games AFTER rank 5 to hit legend. That puts some things into perspective for me. I hit rank 5 maybe last week, but I have other stuff, so that I play maybe 10 games a day, and some days I don't even get to play (Fridays particularly). Sure that may end up being up to 140 games in two weeks, but I think one has to like, sit down and spit out 50 games in a session to get on a serious win streak or just, get some luck. That's something I just don't have time to do this season...maybe next season (o wait, Wildstar comes out at the same time...). Damn, LOL.
So to sum everything up. Yes, once you hit rank 5 the game becomes a slow grind to Legend. Unless you get a lucky streak rolling and get good draws and favorable matchups in most of your matches... Which rarely happens.

Is it just me, or does the game become a lot harder at Rank 5 and above?
I've been hovering between R4 (2 stars) and R6 (4 stars) for a long time. Am I just sucking at the game? It was so easy up to this point!
I'm not normally one to make such 'QQ' threads, but I'm really struggling :'(
Rank 5+ has no doubledipping via winningstreaks, making every win count more.
Rank 5 to legendary is usually a grind of decent luck for most players.

I can't play enough games :(
Best I can get I think will be rank 3-4.

A small update on this:
Having tanked down to R6*** as Druid/Warlock, I decided to give Shaman a go over the past 2 days.
I've played 29 games and gone 21-8 which has landed me, finally, in the R3* position (first time here!).
I don't expect the grind to become any easier, but I just wanted to share my new-found 'light at the end of the tunnel'!
Onwards to Legendary!
p.s. Shaman suffers hard against aggro decks - fortunately there's not many around right now.
