It is not as almighty as the OP thinks it is, but it is extremely frustrating to play against.
Quest Druid beats it 99.9% of the times. Also Kingsbane and Pirate rogue, Totem Shaman, Battlecry/Murloc shaman, Big Priest as well. There are many counters, but I fully agree its mecganics are dumb, annoying, uninteractive and oppressive.
The issue is how badly it locks certain deck styles out of the game. I HATE wild right now because of this. It isnt just secret mage but having fun is almost impossible right now in Wild. And, is forces you to play decks you dont want to play. That also sucks.
This has been the case for quite some time now. It's either aggro or combo decks. Nothing in between.
I hate it. Was always a midrange player. Back in the good old days before endless discovery, disruption and all the other BS we have now. There is NO skill involved in this game whatsoever anymore. None. Not the way they've power crept it and added so much garbage & mana cheat. :(
As someone who hits legend every month and is pretty in tune with the meta right now I feel pretty confident in my ability to say the following.
The 1 drop is amazing it's crazy good we all knew it would be, secret mage is alot more competitive because of this.
Is secret mage a tier 0 deck with no counterplay available at all and is it a centralizing element to the meta? No it is very much not.
To demonstrate what I'm talking about I'll attempt to review the secret mage matchup into the most powerful and popular decks in the format.
Secret mage is amazing into shudder that's its biggest saving grace however it loses to all the other top decks and has no tools to really change much about that.
Even shaman can just press the button and build a board faster than flakmage can reliably come online no matter what you do even shaman is destined to pretty much destroy you even if you have the nuts.
Questline druid the actual best deck in the format doesn't even need to think twice about the secret mage matchup, secrets can't build a threatening board fast enough to contend with druid, nor can mage deal with druids more efficient mana cheat minions or ql druids armor or the insane damage ql druid can put out.
Ql dh another popular and powerful deck at the moment isn't especially weak to mage either due to its ability to put out more stats faster than mage while also having no problem countering secrets.
Aggro priest relentlessly puts out damage in a way secret mage can't handle It has no reliable tools to contest priest early nor does it have any recovery tools when you get bursted down in the mid game.
TLDR:
New 1 drop is amazing and makes secret mage more powerful, secret mage is still a good shudder counter pick but has to fight an uphill battle vs other popular decks currently and mage is far away from being a meta shifting titan.
I know it's a band-aid solution but aggro wtih Eater of Secrets could help versus those pesky secret mages at least. Personally would never resort to playing such a simple and outdated deck as secret mage that plays the game for you. 2017 called and wanted their deck back. The irony is that the people who enjoy playing it are too young to have played the original version.

Eater of Secrets can get countered by objection and does nothing to stop them from vomiting 5/5 and 6/6 units on turn 3.
Wild is a toilet bowl now and not only due to this.
I hope the new game mode is good. Wild may end up like Classic with a mostly bots population. Dane has been playing standard. Roffle will leave Wild for new game mode. If the 2 most established streamers dont like wild anymore, fill in the blanks.

Eater of Secrets doesn't work if objection is up. I am sorry, but cheap techs don't work any more against the deck. The most effective way to beat it is to take calculated risks.

Eater is too weak. Not only because you often can't jam it on 4th because you have to play around objection, it is just way to slow.
We just need a card that destroys all 3 mana spells in hands and decks. Joking (or not?)
The way to beat secret mage is to play a deck that cares only about either counterspell or objection. Also cheap ping is great (dh, even dk). Also accept to lose to highrolls like 6/6 on 2 etcpp.

Agree - I switched to Res Priest at D5 and started beating secret Mages more. Its still a cesspool from D5 on down. Its a split between just 3/4 decks:
Hand vomit aggro(Shaman/Rogue)
Druid mill with Dew process
Secret Mage
Thats about all I ever run into. I dont feel like there is ANY skill at all in play here. If I draw well I win, if I dont, I lose. Thats it. LOL.
Now that I think about it I agree that Eater is weak, because it's better to play a one cost minion to deal with objection. You don't always have one cost minions available though. Then there is the problem with explosive runes. You need a divine shield minion to play around it, so maybe pally is a good choice. A pure paladin or reno paladin might work, as long as you have minion debuffs and city tax.

If warlock had a card that can choose a cost and destroy all cards of that cost, id play the hell out of that shit LUL

A Tier 0 is not a deck without counters or bad matchups.
The unnerfed Demon Seed wild decks had counters (unnerfed Mindrender Illucia Priest).
A Tier 0 deck is one with a winrate above 72%:
Like:

Because it is Hearthstone they'll do nothing like they did with Twig for 2 years.
I like the format as always.

Secret mage isn’t even tier 1. it’s annoying, nothing more
It's not tier 0, not tier 1 not tier whatever. Truth is though it is all over the facking place...
I enjoy times when secret mage is on top. When I play against this deck I am forced to make decisions. And they matter.
When I play against big priest or some solitare OTK deck my decisions matter much less and there are fewer of them.
Saying that, we deserve a better tech card than eater of secrets and other crap available.
