First game I got Astral Communion while having 8 cards in hand and 10 mana already. Glad it only took 2 games to win this one. I sur will be glad to NOT having to play this brawl again. Not only do we not get to build our deck we have a RNG fest so skill doesn't matter.
This easily makes it into the top 10 worst brawls.
Not being skill intensive is half the reason brawl's exist, its just a bunch of luck...
If I wanted to play a game with no skill I would roll dice.
Would you go to a website and write about how dumb dice rolling is?
If dice rolling pretended to be a strategy game I think I would.
What if dice rolling was voluntary? What if there were different ways to play dice and you had the freedom to play any kind of dice you want? What if winning at dice rolling provided something small as a reward for winning that you couldn't get otherwise? What if you wait a week and a dice game you like better might be offered? What if this one type of dice rolling was never really claiming to be a strategy game but you assumed it should be? What if losing a dice game over luck didn't make you mad and then righteous?
Would you still post about dice rolling?
I'm currently not playing HS for anything else than the quests, only to get enough gold for the next adventure.
If that adventure doesn't make the game better, bailing out.
As to different ways to play dice, yes, there are. You can play dice that always rolls between 1-3 ( With equity ), or one that always rolls 1-6 ( Same ) ; Now sure, you can claim everybody is free to play the first one, but truth is no one will, because while said die could be shinier or whatever, it's just a worse die, period ( And, getting out of the dice analogy here, we're in an aggro meta. Even non gimmicky deck have a freaking hard time surviving, so don't give us "Any deck can be played". I was actually pretty okay with the Grim Patron era, despite said deck ruling the meta a lot more harshly, simply because you actually got a chance to play against it ). As to something I can get otherwise, well we're getting into sunken cost fallacy here, 'cause the only thing I can win via Hearthstone, is more stuff in Hearthstone, i.e it is not something that incentivizes playing it if you didn't intend to play in the first place. Waiting for a better dice game, well that's what I'm doing, though I wouldn't put that much hope in it.
As to claiming it was a strategy game, huh, you might want to check the official Hearthstone web page. You will see the word "Strategy" pop up within the first sentence. Or the multiple prize pools offered for Hearthstone tournaments ( And before you try to pull that trick on me, yes, loads of games like Poker have a good amount of randomness in them, but they're not ONLY randomness ( Plus they play a lot more hands than HS players play games, comparatively ), like Hearthstone truly is turning to be by having games be over in 10 card draws and decks' strength be centered around a single card ).
As to losing a dice game, it doesn't make me mad. It makes me mad when the game then pretends I lost because I'm less skilled when all I did was roll a die.
Your problem is with ladder and casual, and I don't blame you, they're garbage for questing. That doesn't mean Brawl was ever designed to be the questing heaven you want it to be, at least not every week.
Your analogies are weird to me -- poker has all kinds of variants that are luckier and swingier than others. I get you want Brawl to be different just seems like shouting at the rain.
This is one of the worst tavern brawls I've seen so far.
I've played about 10 games so far. I haven't enjoyed a single one yet. It feels like every turn is a game of rock-paper-scissors. Either you tie, you win immediately, or you lose immediately. All of the flavor of the cards and game are lost. It's just a matter of "Did I mulligan cheap minions?" "Did I RNG good spells?"
Let me be clear. I just recently achieved 500 wins with mage because I play a deck that I call "Nonsense Mage." My deck is FAR from competitive. I've never been over Rank 15. I rely VERY strongly on luck to achieve wins with that deck. But whether I do or not, I still generally have a good time playing that deck because of the tempo swings (Either in my favor OR my opponent's). In this mode, I feel like they took a good joke and beat it to death.
There have been some real dogshit tavern brawls, but this is the most aggravating in recent memory.
I throw down a 1 health minion, I cast Ancestral Healing. They throw down a 2/3 and cast Velen's Chosen. I throw down a 6 drop, I cast Flamestrike on an empty board. They throw down a 6 drop and cast Mind Control on my 6-drop. I manage to gain a 3-1 board advantage early on. 3rd minion casts excavated evil and I destroy my entire board and give him excavated evil. I throw down and cast Light of the Naaru on my opponent's face. They throw down and cast Fireball.
I'm going to fucking kill someone.
This tavern brawl SUCKS.
YEAH MAN! Why don't they make the brawl more like the RANKED! WHERE EVERYTHING IS BALANCED!!
had a tavern brawl quest, and did 7 wins in a row, i just COULD NOT LOSE. Literally everything went my way. Guess i am out of luck for the rest of the season....
I like RNG in this game but this is way too much. Winning or losing has nothing to do with you (or your opponent). It is just flipping a coin. What a stupid joke!!!
As as an MTG player who runs a deck that is LITERALLY based on flipping coins, I enjoy this brawl.
I've built similar decks, and those decks in Magic are fun. This brawl is the exact opposite, since it's not being played in a casual setting for no prize potential. I'm pretty sure you didn't walk into States or even your FNM group with that deck, you'd play it in casual multiplayer games for fun.
Furthermore, you built the deck, so you knew exactly what you had in it. Statistical probabilities still leaned towards your favor. This brawl is the exact opposite. Only about three classes are actually worth playing, for starters. The spells range from the absolutely broken (Animal Companion) to the horrendously awful (Astral Communion). Your coin deck didn't have just whatever the hell in it. It had specific cards with a linear design. The creatures in your deck are just as awful, you can range from Tirion all the way to Frozen Snowbold.
As another former Magic player (technically current, if you want to count Magic Duels), I can't see how anyone could possibly like this brawl unless they just hate themselves for some undetermined reason.
I understand your point entirely. So I guess I'll just smooth it instead and say I enjoy this random bullshit brawl because idc about the consequences of losing the tavern brawl, I'm just playing it for fun, not for reward. I got my reward in due time and my quests aren't going anywhere
I can't believe Blizzard didn't go all the way with the RNG and have the cards you draw have random stats/mana cost. At least they showed some restraint.
While the RNG is turned up to 11 on this brawl, there is still some modicum of control here. You can control your trades, and except for the odd board clear, you can also control your board state. You have to weigh the risk between trading and dealing damage first before playing creatures or to just praise Yogg at the start of the turn for some sort of favorable benefit and knowing when to do either - that takes skill.
Worst, most frustrating brawl ever created.
So much RNG that one cannot be happy or upset with wins and losses. just go through the motions and move along.
Adventures are fun! Toxic Clowns are not!
This tavern is literally the best I've played.
I don't care whether I win or lose. The rng is just hilarious.
I love Hearthstone for it's RNG aspects.
I don't play to win. I play to have fun.
I saw this tavern brawl and got excited.

This sucks. I hope they don't repeat this one.
Bobo.
damn you blizzard.
this brawl is awesome!
Game1: Opponent - pass. Me - Coin Knife Juggler into Call of the Wild. Opponent - some 2-drop into Astral Communion.
Game2: T1 - Vilefin Inquisitor into Evolve. T2 - Steward of Darkshire into Dark Wispers - 5 divine shielded wisps
normally i hate these RNG brawls, but this time:
had a tavern brawl quest, and did 7 wins in a row, i just COULD NOT LOSE. Literally everything went my way. Guess i am out of luck for the rest of the season....
Won my first game. But what an absolute clown fiesta.

Dead but dreaming
Still not sure what the correct strategy is.
Thus the only reliable and controllable aspect of this brawl is your hero power & the class minions you have access to.
Rogue has an advantage (spells that require you to have a weapon), as do classes with minions that give access to spells & weapons (Mage & Warrior).
Tbh though there's barely any strategy to it at all.

I hate this brawl.
god is this lame... i just throw cards on the board and something completly random happens... such skill, much wow

I like it but sometimes the game is just making fun of you...
