(Optional) 5. Feel free to shut down your PC or mobile device and get some sleep, do your schoolwork or go out for a walk. No need to rack up your electricity bill for nothing!
(Also optional) 6. Check back after 25-ish mins. You should still be in the encounter, which you can now power through for more EXP. Select the next encounter and repeat steps 4-5.
(Also optional) 7. Repeat steps 1-6 many time as you want. Enjoy the free XP while conserving your electricity bill :)
And there you have it! Next time you log in to HS, check your Journal for current XP. If you were gone long enough to "get disconnected" from the match, you should have gotten 120 XP (no BP) or 144 XP (with BP).
Winning encounters, at most, nets you 168 XP (no BP) or 202 EXP (with BP). This caps out somewhere around 30 min mark, so if you really wanna milk it, check back after every 25-27 mins so you don't lose out on XP.
At worst you're sleeping overnight and wake up with free 120 XP.
I don't understand why you want to farm exp. The real issue is farm tasks. You can simply put the merc low in the team while you are farming tasks.
It seems very pointless to me your idea.
Free exp = free gold = more of whatever you want.
It's a low commitment, easy way to get exp without roping people out on ladder or tanking matches in BGs. I support this method.
I've done this a little bit at work, while my phone is sitting on my desk next to me. Just start a bounty, queue up your attacks, then set a timer for 30 minutes. Rinse and repeat for 202xp per battle.

It's not free at all you still gotta do things, you just turned a fun game into a garbage clicking/semi idle game.
Checking back and repeat all the steps every 20 minutes sounds horrible and depressing and I don't see what else the op can do in his life that is so significant within these 20 minutes, so yeah it's pretty much strictly worse than playing the game whenever you want and getting xp from it, extremely alienating and unneffective farming method, makes zero sense to use it unless you actively want to sabotage your life.

Do you play this game 24/7? Then yeah, this isn't a method that works for you... I've been playing Mercenaries semi-idle while I work and this is great... oh I have a 30 min call? cool, just load up a game before the call, talk for 30 min, come back and then I get 10x the exp than I would if I just played the battle

I feel like that's maybe taking it to the extreme there... farming is exactly what it sounds like. It's farming. It's not the same as playing the game and having fun. I do that when I can focus my attention on it and actually enjoy it.
Putting my phone to the side and clicking a few things every half hour to get rewards from it is very low impact on my day, but it boosts my overall gold afterward which I can then use to enjoy the game further. So I'd call that a net gain.

You'd be amazed what you can do in 20-30 minutes. For example, you can:
- start making a lunch/dinner, once your food is in the oven you've got some downtime.
- do some housekeeping chores.
- do some warmups and a 10-15 min workout routine.
- watch an episode of your favorite show.
As for "sabotaging your life", I'm perfectly content with mine. I get to be on a computer maybe 2-3 hours a day (because real life obligations) and the current Standard meta just doesn't cater to my interest. While waiting for next expansion or possible nerfs, I might as well just rake the free XP & Gold and hope the meta becomes more varied at a later date.
30 mins of playing whatever game I want -> alt-tabbing into HS to click some stuff -> Back to playing whatever I want for 30 mins -> Rinse and repeat. Really ain't no skin off my back.

I mean yeah it's extreme but, doing something repetitive and alienating every 20min for some extremely marginal gain is not very low impact on my day, it's huge and can cause depression (or less extreme forms of it). I know it's not supposed to be fun but it's supposed to be extremely effective, that's like the one reason you would sacrifice fun, efficiency. And this doesn't sound efficient as farming, you lose 100% fun but you barely gain twice the normal amount of resource it's just bad, no pro player in the world would ever do that and in fact, I suspect none ever has or ever will, they already have full level 30 collection anyway, and doesn't sound useful at all when done "for free" like you said during a phone call or whatever (you're still distracted and I'm not sure your boss is ok with that). It's not like it's even hard to get every merc to level 30 anyway, what are you guys farming exactly.
But I'm also a guy who wasted years of his life doing this kind of stuff to the extreme in games like raid shadow legends. So I know what i'm talking about and I know how ugly and futile it can get, but I definitely shouldn't be the one to judge. I'm just saying, this kind of routine can have huge impact on your life without you noticing a change, even if this sounds insignificant because it's just a few clicks on your phone.
I mean phones basically did that to us already, most people are literally farming attention on social media, to what purpose no one knows, and it is now normal to everyone. A few years back when I was a teenager my parents would punish me for using my phone when we are eating dinner, now on family dinners I'm the only one without a phone on the table at all times. Our brain isn't ready for farming, I guess is what i'm saying, I don't even know I lost myself.

I think your opinion is valid and didn't mean to offend anyone, and said everything I wanted in the previous post if you want to read it. I think distractions are fine but when we're getting intentionally distracted from our distraction is when we're going in the wrong direction for me. I just feel like you're getting more dopamine from it that actual hearthstone benefits and i'm not sure that's good.
For me it seems that 193 xp is the cap. I found this day one. The amount of time per fight. The longer the fight the more exp. You can use a mouse macro just so the battle doesn't time out and after like 15+ minutes finish the fight and your got max exp.

The point of this is to get exp for the rewards track, which in turn gives you gold to use in the game.
The time spent doing this has a real, monetary value, if you look at this way. (and if you care about having more gold in HS)
You make excellent points about people being distracted in general and the dependency on our phones, though. This can definitely get out of hand if people take it too seriously. Everyone's personal case will be different.
That said, if this kind of attention-taking, repetitive action is going to harm your happiness in any way, then I would not recommend it at all. We all need to be cognizant of our own mental health needs and pay attention to the things that are actually important.
For what it's worth, when I was a teenager, I didn't even have a cell phone to get yelled at for having at the dinner table - but the idea that we need to be present for the people around us was still an important lesson I was taught. I hope others can learn that, too.

Oh yes the reward track I forgot about that. Isn't it strictly better to AFK farm Hearthstone instead of Mercenaries though ?
Well, as a fun little experiment, I tried AFKing in BGs just to see what happens.
In roughly 15 minutes of being afk and getting beat up, I lost and got 43exp (with tavern pass)
Sitting in a mercs bounty and then winning the battle for about 30 minutes nets a maximum of 202exp (with pass), so it seems to be a better option for the time spent.
:)

What, you don't like to rack up free Gold while you could do something else on your device? Alright, your loss.
It really is quite rewarding in terms of XP for the tavern pass. My usual recipe is:
1) Start a PvE run
2) Get distracted by something and forget it
3) Come back 30min-2h later and finish the fight, earn 202XP
Exactly what I needed, thank you so much for the guide

Well, as a fun little experiment, I tried AFKing in BGs just to see what happens.
In roughly 15 minutes of being afk and getting beat up, I lost and got 43exp (with tavern pass)
Sitting in a mercs bounty and then winning the battle for about 30 minutes nets a maximum of 202exp (with pass), so it seems to be a better option for the time spent.
