Im still trying to fig. out the reasonin of giving this hero such a huge buff for BG. He was already powerful enough with his hero power of +1,+1 for minions. But then they give him a companion that fills the taven with minions of each tavern level. which basically gives the person playing him a free win from the start as most people are wiped out before they even get to 10 mana. I watched as the person playing him was just killing off each person they played by the time we got to 7 mana.
Even myself played him and it was disgusting at how much of a power jump they gave this hero, i was just picking random 6 tier minions for my board watching as they wiped out peoples tier 2-3 minions without any issue and never lost any health the whole run. So yea this one among many other heros that were already tier 1 got major jumps with their companions. While you have heros like "AFK" who got some stupid buddy that does nothing with an already weak hero power to go with it and get killed off pretty early in the game.
The only thing I can relate to here is the part about AFK...
But I didn't even bother trying guff's buddy since he (still) looks so terrible :p
Guff's... not that bad, but suffers from the same weak earlygame as ever since his (deserved) nerf. +1/+1 on a board is often not enough considering the smaller board to keep the buffs targetted, plus the power of other HPs. The buddy, though is great - though high variance. if you get chaff 5 and 6 on the buddy, you're going to be in trouble (made better with the removal of Hamuul, though that still makes me sad). Any tribal focused 6 is sad when you're probably going for a menagerie with one slot free for cycling. If you get a great one? That's one heck of a power spike.
There's more powerful buddies, though, like Mishmash and Wagtoggle's.
I've never thought guff was awful, and I'd say the buff finally gets him to good hero with fun rng effect rather than an average hero with a fun rng effect.
I agree that getting to do extra damage early is part of why he's good, making it less likely people "get there" can help more awkward heroes like guff.
I did play him only the one time since the buff and I did win(coincidentally also won because of the mech lady's nerf, my final opponent) so 100% win rate since buff is pretty good, for guff ;)
The Buff certainly gives him some tempo that might just cut it for him. I haven't tried it yet so you probably know better than I. Buff heroes generally don't perform that well. At least in the 7-8000 range :)
Looks still quite weak to me. Minions in tavern might be high level but they're random.
How useful can a Baron and a Nadina be if you have a board of tier 2 mechs and murlocs? Even a Malygos takes some serious economy and luck to bring into the lategame.
There are some tempo units to be had that can help the midgame greatly, but most heroes have got massive tempo boosts aswell.
If the slowest heroes don't work for you, don't pick them. It's not enough that a hero is good, you also have to be comfortable with its playstyle.

Excuse me, what?
I think what you may have experienced was a dream after staying up playing a little too much Battlegrounds.
He may have just been playing at super low rank with newbies too.
