First off, please don’t try to direct me to the salt thread. This is a sincere inquiry.
I can’t figure out why guys game induces so much rage. I’ve played countless competitive games I’m my lifetime (3 decades of gaming) and not one game even comes close to this in terms of causing rage. I’m not the only one, as one can look at the salt thread and see how mad people get over this shit.
I’d love to know why though. Is it because luck plays such a big role and skill is completely unnecessary? Is it the stupid high roll plays that have began dominating the outcomes? Is it the fact that people only play 3-4 out of the dozens of fun and viable decks? Or is it something else?
don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the game. The artwork, game engine, and design (for he most part) is great. But it has the ability to cause polarizing emotions. One game is fun and thrilling, then the next causes nothing but frustration and anger. And it’s not really about winning and losing. I think it’s HOW games are won and lost. But again, my overall opinion of the game is positive, so I win continue as long as I find it a worthwhile use of my leisure time.
I’ve began looking into MTG: Arena, which I don’t believe is out yet, but should be soon. It looks a lot more complicated, but the skill-factor is more important, or at least it appears that way. Maybe that is less rage-inducing.
Any thoughts on why this game is so polarizing in emotions?
I dont get mad with this game. The only thing that can trigger ppl is u playing a control match doing great decision making spending 15 to 20 or more mins and then next match u face a pure aggro deck with perfect draw and curve while the game decided u couldn't draw removal spellsor any cheap taunts while holding 8 to 10 mana cards after mulligan. So in 5 min u lose the match and all ur effort and great skill from the previous match just goes down the drain in a blink of an eye.
Many get mad at that. Me personally i just get sad and disappointed cause that stops ppl that could reach legend but cant due to time restrictions. Easy to reach legend when u play a fast deck 6 hours a day. Then they think its skill. Some call it luck i just call it having time which is the most valuable asset in the world
It's just a game dude and it's purpose is to entertain you. Except if you are streaming with the purpose to show others how good you are at Hearthstone, I don't see any reason why this game should cause you anger. For example, a bit of frustration is understandable if you are trying to reach legend and lose some games thanks to RNG, but anger? Seriously? That is too much...
You should probably need to learn to control better your emotions.
Don't let some of the people fool you, HS is not a rocket science. It is way too simple game for its own good. It was designed as a casual game (competitive HS is my a**). Starting with only three card is a joke. It means that you have to be lucky to win. The simplicity of this game (destroy your opponent's health) seriously limiting design space.
Game was basically designed as RnGstone. Most of the games are won or lost based on your mulligan, first four draws and your opponent class (rock-paper-scissors). When you are a newbie you don't realise most of these things, more you play more you realise this.
Anyways as long as you don't take this game serious and play it here and there causally you should be alright.
While some people slightly touched the reason I think this happens. I personally believe it is because by losing you get punished by having to spend another 5-15 more to get to your goal. And the progress you made? gone. (It is the reason I prefer to play faster decks when ranking, more games is more chances to reach your goal)This is also where the most hatred towards aggro decks come from, people who play controll and lose a lot more time per loss. Second of all the way it is designed is a casual game pushed into a competitive format, someone mentioned the starting hand asa big reason if you win or lose, and I agree with that. Often if I have anot terrible match up and a good starting hand, I win. Now I am not saying I, or people in general don't missplay, I think loads of us do that, but that is sometimes hard to see for yourself, so the perception of people in general will then be: I lost a game , wasted 15 minutes of my time because I got unlucky. This is a feeling that can turn to hopelessness if you are on a losing streak, which tends to make things worse. his is why I think for many (including myself) after they hit rank5, it doesn't matter anymore, you achieved your goal, and you play for 5 extra dust.
I personally try to not to get this game get to me, and looking at the salt thread, I seem to be doing okay at that. But man sometimes it just feels like being hit with a brick losing rank after rank..
I think what would solve this problem for many people is more safety ranks, some might argue that will make it easier, I would disagree, it would make it less tedious, which is a good thinng, since tediousness should never be confused with difficulty. You invest time in this game, not skill.
Time and luck trump skill, which is a shame. That’s likely the cause, but I’m sure other things are to blame as well.
like I said, I don’t get any rage from any other game I play, so it’s not like I’m an easily angered gamer. I’m pretty chill. But losing streaks based on luck is so damn annoying. That and he matchmaking system is shit.
I imagine if you're constantly playing decks simply because they are popular or considered meta, and then you proceed to have a below 50 percent winrate, not hard to see that person becoming outrageously frustrated. Course they did it to themselves; that's the price for a lack of integrity.

If you thought you knew what you think I know, then you'd know I knew you knew I know.
A bit of paradox here - I'm not getting upset when i lose 20 minutes long game full of decisions and thinking, but i'll be pretty angry if i lose game against Dumbadin ( Dude-paladin ), without having a chance to do something with it.
It's so fucking frustrating to win 20 minutes long Renolock vs. Renolock game, and then instantly lose game against pirate warrior.
This game is no different than Poker. Try playing a game where you are dealt 5 cards out of a deck of 52 and each time you have no idea of what you're up against. You bet hoping to win some money. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. There is skill involved in the bet, just like in Hearthstone. You're betting on whether or not your opponent has the tech card or board clear. Sometimes he does, and sometimes he doesn't.
Sometimes I feel like I am not able to win a single game and the worst thing is that since the rng is such dominant factor, you feel like you can't do anything about it. I usually force myself to take a break after 3 losses in a row since after that each loss enrages me to the point when I start thinking about uninstalling the game completely.

Hi there, another "old gamer" here ( 44 years old, gaming since forever ). I think the issue is that in HS RNG>skills, simply as that.
This game is not to be taken seriously, it is just a very light game meant for fun! Have fun and nothing else! :)
THIS (for me anyway) explains a lot.
Also a Old, Decrepit, Gamer (46 years old, started playing MtG when you could still buy Alpha and Beta booster for face value, played in WoW closed Beta, and cut my teeth on computer gaming staring at a monochrome monitor playing MUD's :-)
But yeah, most of my rage moments with HS are the RNG factor. I like to advance in skill in whatever I play, and I like to see that dedication pay off. I have invested the money into HS to have a fairly complete card collection, so building any deck is not an issue, and I have invested the time into watching quality streamers play for hours and hours, and I play HS a LOT.
And with all that, I still honestly believe that half or more of my games are decided no matter what I do. I draw the nuts, and I win, I draw like crap, and I lose. Or my opponent draws the nuts, and I lose. Discover mechanic gives my opponent literally the ONLY card that can save them, ... ect, ect ... the list goes on.
And then there is the matchmaking. Of all the "supposed" random things in the game, I strongly believe it is not random. You have to suspend logic to believe that it is. When your opponents just instantly change when you change decks, every single time, that cannot be explained away with all the typical explanations. When you are facing 90% or more aggro decks, which is what would be expected at specific times of the season, and you switch to a control deck to counter them, and suddenly the aggro decks disappear, and you now see combo after combo deck ... something there is not random.

I wanna glide down, over Mulholland I wanna write her, name in the sky I wanna free fall, out into nothin' Gonna leave this, world for awhile
I always start a session enjoying it, but eventually when I keep getting a cycle of cubelock, secret mage, dude/murloc paladin, and more cubelock the rage starts to build which makes me drink more which makes me rage more and so on until I start wishing for their deaths in the salt thread. It just feels like skill and experience means nothing and the game is decided before it even starts based on the draw you get. Feeling like winning is out of your hands is very frustrating.
There is a legitimate question of "why do you play then?", and for me it's just a way to kill time that doesn't require a huge time commitment like some other more fun games. It's nice having the matches be broken up into 5-10 minute chunks.
I've experienced moments of frustration too it happens in any game remotely competitive. But ive grown to just not let the a GAME get to me that losing can happen and losing stars or rank wont kill ya.
I've played MTG for many more years longer the Hearthstone, to be fair MTG does have a bit of learning curve because of the phases and abilities and you can interact with things during your opponents turn (which you cant do with hearthstone besides with secrets). I myself after watching some gameplay am pretty pumped for MTG Arena, i would definitely check it out and get beta access (hopefully).
What I tell myself when losing to RNG is that RNG can't be controlled, so instead I look at what I could control and how I played the game.
... and then I tilt when I realize I made a misplay
