Greetings friends. With all the buzz that Overload is getting with the release of Tunnel Trogg, something hit me. If that one card is enough to make us even dare tinker with Overload again, how come Lava Shock didn't do the same? It's the card that negates Overload's downside completely. Yes, it was tested, but it was dismissed immediately.
When Lava Shock was released and I also realized that it was just too clunky to use, I said to myself, "Well, the card is balanced for what it does. It may be a bit too powerful if it costed 1 mana instead." That's what I was thinking until TGT came out.
Living Roots was released and now that I think about it, I question the balance of Lava Shock. It's conservatively designed compared to Living Roots. I mean, you are already afraid of Druids having many minions in the late game because of the Force of Nature + Savage Roar combo, yet they give Druids a card that's so good at any point of the game. And look at Lava Shock, it only shines on very rare occasions and they still gave it a higher mana cost.
For the love of the elements, how can you let this be? Thrall has been scraping the bottom of the barrel for a long time now, give him some love. Look at Rogues now, with the advent of Unearthed Raptor, it single handedly spawned a new way to play the class. How come Shaman's savior has not yet arrived?
Frostbolt: deals 3 damage + freeze, if you are just killing something with 3 life you don't get anything from the freezing effect, but if you combo it with icelance or use it to hold a minion/hero from attacking one turn you get some extra value.
Quickshot: deals 3 damage, but if your hand is empty you draw a card, in this case you get great value.
Darkbomb: just deals 3 damage, but warlock Hero Power is the best unlike shaman that is on the other extreme being one of the worst.
If Lava Shock was 3 damage it would be balanced sometimes you would just use it to deal 3 damage, like killing a 3 health minion on turn 2, and a few times you would get a bit more and unlock some Mana Crystals just like Frostbolt and Quickshot.
I think you're right. It could be deal 3 damage + unlock overloaded crystals which would make it significantly better. Also all the other class's 2 mana deal damage + do something cards have 3 damage. For example Frostbolt, Wrath, Darkbomb, Quick Shot all deal 3 damage as a baseline
I keep asking myself this, i use lavashock in any control shaman list since is the single card that enables the use of elemental destruction but it being 3 damage would make it good enough to run in almost any shaman deck.
Yes Lava Shock is bad right now, but you cannot compare it with other cards like Holy Smite or Living Roots, as these cards has zero synergy potential.
Lava Shock is going to become stronger with each new good overload card, that gets added to the game.
The question is, if the card ever is going to be strong enough. If we get more cards like Elemental Destruction where most af the manacost is in the overload, then it might end up being a consistent Innervate which would make people call for nerfs instead.
Patience is a virtue. Just wait for a couple more content releases, see what comes out, what makes older cards playable again. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised.
What's up with that trend of buff threads : you don't like a card ? Then don't play it, move on and quit complaining.
Comparing this card to Living Roots is stupid. These are two very different cards : an early removal on one side, and a mid-late game combo card on the other. Thay druid card don't have the potential to gain you 5+ mana like Lava Shock does.
Also, why buff a card that already gets stronger everytime a good overload card is released ?
1)You are not fun. 2)Agree that's why I compare it to Quickshot, etc 3)The card has been out for 3 expansion and still had not impact on the game while shaman has been the worse class for a whole year. The card in theory can be broken but in practice like a lot of cards and cute combos isn't. Also the only card released after BRM witch has more than 1 overload (using Lava Shock even to clear 2 crystals isn't that good) is Elemental Destruction and not all of us gree that is that good of card, stupid amounts of overload, it hit your own stuff, it requires you to combo it with another card and the amount of Deathrattles in the game lowers its effectiveness.
This card is just another example that shaman always get a worse version of cards that other classes already have and in most cases (not this one) comes with overload just so you know it is a shaman card.
Just like Ben Brode said. Bad class, shaman, must exist. So, don't be confused when you compare shaman cards with other class cards, and see a clear difference.
I would prefer Lava Shock be a 1 mana spell, so at least it's thematically in line with the other "Shock" spells. Oh and HighJusticeGrims, I really, REALLY hope you are right. It's just that Rogues have also been at a rock bottom but LoE changed that with one card, and Shamans are still halfway there. In the meantime, I would agree with Tonegart. It's been a long time since I played Shaman and expected to win.

I agree. The best way to buff Lava Shock will be to create more cards that synergize with it.
If they buff the damage, the card becomes a liability when they want to create more cards like Elemental Destruction.
Played a lot of that Tunnel Trogg deck. That card shines. But what about lava shock? Being 1 mana would overclass arcane shot for example , but that's fine! Who da fuck runs that instead of that troll malygos hunter? I know that is a horrible comparison , but if lava shocks becomes less 1 mana , you'll just use it for early removal. Every control shaman needs to run it because of elemental destruction. I don't know why you would buff this . Shaman is definetly the worst class. But that card will get buffed in the next expansions. I don't know why you don't discuss about something that's complete trash compared to other stuff. Lava shock isn't trash.
I have to add in, Loatheb really makes this card that much worse if you plan to space out your use. If you have to Elemental devastation to prevent your death on turn 6 and say you are overloaded from turn 5 or you need to cast a silence with it, if you save your next 2 mana crystals on turn 7 to lava shock your mana back you pretty much lose the game right there. 5/5 charge + extra mana and take an extra turn...
This card is so niche and over costed i'm a bit sad :(, i'd much prefer a cost reduction to 1 mana with either no damage and a draw effect or 1 mana deal 2 damage. It's a shock, all the shocks cost 1 mana as is, why doesn't this one cost 1 mana to be in line with earthshock or frost shock?
Reason I don't like lava shock is that it has 1 mana overload built into it. It's a 1 mana card so you have to overload for more than 1 for you to actually gain any value.

I would change Lava Shock to "Unlock your overloaded mana crystals. Draw a card"
It needs to deal 3 damage.Simple as that.
Frostbolt: deals 3 damage + freeze, if you are just killing something with 3 life you don't get anything from the freezing effect, but if you combo it with icelance or use it to hold a minion/hero from attacking one turn you get some extra value.

At least I have chicken

THE LEGEND!!!! (not really)
If Lava Shock dealt 3 damage, I'd feel really bad about Lightning bolt.
Howdy! [cardimg=gold ]Card Name[ /cardimg] (no space)
Hey, how's it going?
What's poppin,' player?

Blizz wanted a murloc theme for Shaman, but gave best card of the tribe Murloc Knight to Uther.
They wanted a deathrattle theme for Shaman, and now Rogue has Unearthed Raptor.
They are creating half-assed deck archtypes for Shaman.
I would reduce the cost of it to one mana, because if it dealt 3 damage Lightning Bolt would be useless

GG.
How many cards have been buffed in the history of hearthstone? Whether deserved or not, don't hold your breath for lava shock's buff.
