Well, been stuck at rank 5 for a couple days now.... switched to a zoolock...same thing. Guess it's time to just get better :\
I was 4 almost 3, got in a losing streak, tilted and got back to 7 BibleThump
Then I relaxed, got back to 4, lost and went back to 5 and decided to call it before I was rank 20.
And meanwhile I saw a guy going from rank 5 to legend, in that same time, using a rogue deck very similar to one I have. That freaks me out. Am I this bad? I may assume I'm not as good as he is, but I don't consider myself that bad of a player. But I guess I am

I wouldn't stress too much, sometimes RNGesus is your friend and sometimes he isn't. I went on a streak up from 7/4 to 5/4 then got the worst mulligans ever. tilted back down again... weeeeeeeee... at least now I stay between 6 and 4... getting more consistent I guess. However with all of my decks it seems if I don't get a good start I get f***ed.
I was stuck at ranks 6-7 with quarter pala and mech shaman and I started using mech mage.
However, I noticed that if I lost board control after the "initial aggro rush", the game would be lost. No big guys or late game alternatives other than Archmage Antonidas (just one card in a deck that usually wins/looses before turn 10) or Dr. Boom (great card but there's always a BGH for him).
So I added Piloted Sky Golem, Sneed's Old Shredder, GazloweandToshley to the deck, to have more mid-late game presence, as well as an alternative to antonidas to refuel. I removed unstable portals, one cogmaster and... something else. After a 12W 3L, I'm now at rank 4, so it's kind of working!
Not a lot of games yet, and still but looks promising. It's true that you must be focused from rank 6 upwards, a single mistake means loosing the game! And the opponents in rank 5 up not only have all the cards they need, they also don't usually missplay a card.
The good thing of the deck I'm playing is that nobody expects it. They expect a standard mech mage and spend all their cards trying to stop me in the early turns, but then realize a have a few big drops. 90% of the matches, you can go to hearthpwn, check the popular decks, and find the one your opponent's playing. They do not know what I'm playing, so that's also an advantage.
How are you liking Gazlowe? I have him and have thought about throwing him in for awhile.
Do not be surprised by this. It's only natural that you keep hitting a brick wall at that point. Achieving legend is hard because Rank 20-5 is virtually a warm-up. No offense to anyone, but it's considered a play pin by good players and is pretty much meaningless. It's a misconception that getting from 5 to legend is just the last little thing you have to do, in reality climbing the ladder only just gets started at Rank 5. Besides the fact that win streaks stop, the players are just better and every deck is going to be complete with all the legendary and epic cards needed for whatever it is they are playing. It's not supposed to be easy from that point onward and it isn't easy for the average player.
To get legendary, you have to step up your game to the next level. Make zero mistakes, find the deck that counters the decks you play against the most at that rank and plan several turns ahead. You can't just play a typical game and expect to win more than 50% of your matches, you have to play a superb game.
btw, any of the popular Mech Mage decks is viable for getting legendary. There is not a really hard counter to Mech Mage anyway. You mentioned control decks, as if they are the counter to Mech Mage? That's a fallacy, Mech Mage is actually strongest against control decks and weakest against aggro and mid-range decks but really it isn't weak to anything.
Best advise in this thread.
Honestly - Mech Mage is one of the strongest decks around at the moment (at least on EU - Kezan Mystic seems to be a thing on US judging from streams I've watched).
I got from rank 2 no stars to legend in about 4 hours towards the tail end of last season. If you play enough games you'll make it.

Definitely the best advice but there are some pretty hard counters to mech mage. One being token paly, if you over extend you get consecrated and if you don't you get mauled with muster quartermaster combo and you have no good board wipe
