Do you miss playing Hunter on ladder because it is considered "tier 3"? Are you looking for a new, fun, yet competitive Hunter build? Want your decisions to make a difference in the outcome of the game? Well you came to the right place!
I'm TheJordude, a competitive Hearthstone player currently for compLexity gaming, and today I'd like to share with you guys my discover Hunter deck that I used to break into top 100 legend for the March season.

For my spreadsheet/data I am recording with this deck, here is the link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-2nhM8ALiXi23e2ECqDK6qUBGUUADcEFRuJlewLbg4Q/edit#gid=0
I'll update the spreadsheet whenever I play this deck to keep up with matchup winrates, quality of discover cards, etc. If you have ways on improving the spreadsheet let me know! (average of discover card function for ex).

Here is the screenshot of when I broke into top 100 on stream:
Card Choices
- 2x Hunter's Mark: Great tempo card where you can trade in your 1/1s to deal with big threats. I use 2 because I do not run any spell damage spells, so I rely on my minions to efficiently remove minions.
- Trap lineup: In a slower/midrange like build for Hunter, these 3 traps are a good combination in affecting the board and it is hard for your opponent to play around all of theme effectively.
- Jeweled Scarab: This card helps generate card advantage against slower matchups, creates a curve, fills in mana, etc. Mainly this card lets the deck be much more flexible, allowing you to discover the best card you need in each situation. This card lets you cut traditional 3 mana cards like Kill Command and Eaglehorn Bow to put other options in like Desert Camel and Brann Bronzebeard.
- Brann Bronzebeard: Synergizes with so many cards in this deck. All your discover cards for extra card advantage, Ram Wrangler for a board swing, Houndmaster for a big buff etc. This card is also a big threat if you play it for tempo and your opponent can't deal with it.
- Desert Camel: This card lets you fish out your Webspinners so you can cycle them quicker and do not draw them late game. Only 1 Camel is needed since you only have 2 1 drops, and this card can be very awkward against other aggressive decks. If you wanted to run 2, you would have to run Zombie Chow or Injured Kvaldir, both terrible if drawn late game. The 2/4 body is also very good when you can buff it or your Webspinner with Houndmaster the following turn.
- Dreadscale: Amazing in clearing boards against aggro or combo with Hunter's Mark.
- Tomb Spider: Similar to Jeweled Scarab, this card lets you keep your hand replenished, and lets you choose the right minion for the right situation most of the time. This card really helps in the control matchup when you can discover multiple Savannah Highmane or other big beasts.
- Ram Wrangler: Have always been a big fan of this card in slower Hunter builds, sometimes you just auto-win off this card. Here's an example :)
Card Options
- Haunted Creeper: You would replace this over Jeweled Scarab if there is a lot of aggro. But if the meta is more midrange or control I'd keepJeweled Scarab.
- Explosive Trap: Instead of Freezing Trap if there is more aggro.
- Piloted Shredder: Instead of Tomb Spider if the meta is faster. If that is the case all of the above you should just play a faster or traditional midrange Hunter.
- Sludge Belcher #2: Instead of Ram Wrangler (preference).
- Dr. Boom: I don't run him because I do not want a Big Game Hunter target. If I want a big threat I can always discover it or get it from Webspinner.
Playstyle and Strategy Tips
- Very similar to midrange hunter in the sense of big tempo/curve turns that can snowball
- Try to play your minions on curve and snowball with tempo swings like Houndmaster, Hunter's Mark, Unleash the Hounds, etc.
- Plan ahead on your discover minions. Obviously play them if that is your only option but if there are other options consider what you can discover, what you need, if you can play it the same turn, what your following turns look like and what you want to fill in your curve, etc.
- Weaving in your hero power is nice, but not as necessary as other Hunter decks, as this deck can grind longer games through discover.
- Try to set up the board with traps, trading, etc when you have a big swing turn like turn 6 Savannah Highmane or turn 4 Houndmaster.
- In aggro matchups try to get a big swing turn with Knife Juggler Unleash the Hounds combo. Aggressively fight for board but start racing if you need to since this deck runs no heal and is vulnerable to direct burn.
- In midrange matchups try to get board early and maintain board control. This deck has a lot of useful tempo cards that gives it an advantage like Hunter's Mark, Freezing Trap, etc.
- In control matchups do not overcommit to board clears like Brawl, Shadowflame, etc. If you have a board make your opponent respond to it, then refill after the clear. Pay attention to their hand, if you see they couldn't board clear when they should have, it may be a sign to up the pressure.
Matchups
As you may see from the spreadsheet I linked above, I do not have enough data on matchups yet. I can say that this deck farms Druid and Control Warrior though, 2 decks that are popular on ladder at the moment. This deck does decent against zoo when you get the Unleash the Hounds combo. This deck from what I've seen is especially weak to aggro Shaman and freeze Mage.
And that's it for what I have to say for now! If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave a comment below, or better yet join my stream when I'm live so I can give you a quick, direct, and live response ^.^

I started playing this decklist (minus Dreadscale, cause I don't have it) yesterday on EU-ladder starting on rang 6. I played 10 games, lost only 2.
Looses were against classic combo druid (more due to unlucy draw on my side) and secret paladin. Won games against different types of warrior (controll, patron), druides (combo variants), facehunter, zoolock, and reno-mage (relatively slow meta in my assumtion).
When I tested this decklist 2 days ago I lost every game against tempo mage because of burn-spells.
Overall great deck.
Ramp Druid = Auto Loss
This deck is awesome, so much fun and works fine so far, only tried it so im 3-0 but crushed secret paladin and 2 midrange druids so ...
Gonna keep on playing to see how far i can go with it, thanks for sharing !
Well, this deck gets wrecked by most meta shit decks, like renolock
Since i don't have Dreadscale should i change 1 Hunter's Mark? Or is it still good enough?
4-11, only fun, no more
Funniest deck ever, thanks!
May be best midrange deck in now moment! Fun and powerfull.
Exaggerate much? Ever hear of Zoo, Tempo Mage, Secret Pally, or Mid Pally?
It just my opinion, im not competitive player im casual crab.
Thanks for this awesome deck while waiting for standard, its very fun to play with
"waiting for standard" It's still a month away, long wait don't ya think?
Wait for all the new cards to come out, no one knows all the rebalances and new cards now, so no one actually knows how to change a deck for standard. This is common sense.
fun thsnk
This looked like an interesting Hunter build (for a change as of late) and since I am on Hunter binge (Midrange for last two seasons) I was very interested to try it.
It is very fun to play, but it brings out same mixed feelings as other "alternate" Hunter builds (like Camel) I've tried. I think the trait that defines Hunter most as a class is its ability to put high damage pressure on the opponent. It is unfortunate reason Hunter is currently stuck in that one-dimensional Face/Midrange tier 3 niche, but it also clearly much of its strength. In my opinion builds that dial down that pressure have trouble making up for it.
This deck seems to try play value game (fun part) in a meta that is defined by ridiculous mana to power ratios (MC of Secret Paladin, Combo of Druid, Reno of Renolock, and so on). Overabundance of generic value has trouble matching up to that without ability to confidently finish your opponent off.
Fun, but I'm with the other posters in that I get stomped by aggro.
Ram Wrangler is so much fun. http://plays.tv/s/Kjgw47YQUe6m
I love this deck! It's a new approach on hunter: it's a midrange deck, but with waaay highers chances to beat control because of all the value of the Discovers, while also keeping good Tempo Plays, to have a good chance against other midrange/tempo oriented decks.
I find a bit difficult to stop aggro with it, due to the lacking of healings and taunts. If they manage to sneak some early damage, it's very tough to recover. Perhaps adding a Defender of Argus is a good idea? I did this to other midrange decks and it helps a LOT. I'll try and let you know!
Anyway, thanks for the list!
I'm loving this deck! Only have 30 more wins to get my golden huntard and just can't stomach any more face. I didn't have Dreadscale and don't forsee spending the dust on him anytime soon (if ever) so I took your recommendation of Eaglehorn Bow and swapping Explosive Trap for Freezing Trap and it works wonders! Actually beat a freeze mage by him triggering my explosive trap with 2 hp left!
When you see plebs who don't play hunter pretending to know how to play hunter.
