Today was the release of TGT and I'm excited to say that I achieved Legend today with TGT Dragon Mage. Currently I'm 10-1 with the deck and thought I'd share the fun with you ladies and gents.
The deck when piloted and drawn well can beat anything, but it takes a bit of time to understand what the optimal plays really are.
Edit #1 (8/25/2015) - Decided to make the following changes to better combat midrange and aggro decks. -1 Coldarra Drake, -1 Antique Healbot, +2 Illuminator.
Here is a brief breakdown of mulligans and playstyle:
Vs Aggro -
Opening Hands - 2x Frostbolt, 2x Mad Scientist, 2x Explosive Sheep, 2x Fallen Hero, (If Coin = Yes) 1x Twilight Guardian.
Try to mulligan for your early 2-mana Spells and Minions to keep hold of the board early in the game long enough to reach a stable point in the mid to late game. Always deal with your opponents board position when given the option (lethal comes later). Try to hold your Explosive Sheep to get a bare minimum of 2-3 cards since your opponent typically doesn't play around an early sweeper (until this deck becomes more well known). One of the best plays you can make against an aggro deck is Mad Scientist (Duplicate) into Coin + Twilight Guardian, there's just too much beef your opponent has to fight through. Alexstraza should be saved until your Ice Block has been popped or just defensively in general in most matchups.
Vs Midrange & Combo -
Opening Hands - 2x Frostbolt, 2x Mad Scientist, 1x Explosive Sheep, 2x Fallen Hero, 1x Twilight Drake, 1x Twilight Guardian
You shouldn't need to hold onto Explosive Sheep (unless your up against a Paladin or Warlock) but the other 2-mana Minions and Spells tend to become helpful when trying to stall long enough to get to a Late Game. Try to make optimal plays for board control until eventually you out value your opponent with card advantage and syngergies. Alexstraza should almost always be used as a defensive ability/minion, so wait until that block has been popped, unless you feel comfortable and safe going aggro mode. Don't be afraid to use Fallen Hero as a 3/2 body to trade with or build a board presence, the ability is just icing on the cake if you find the chance. Save your Polymorphs for large and difficult minions such as: Sylvanas, Alexstraza, Archmage Antonidas, Ysera, etc...
Vs Control -
Opening Hands - 2x Frostbolt, 2x Mad Scientist, 2x Fallen Hero, 2x Twilight Drake, 1x Twilight Guardian
The only tough control matchup I have really had was Handlock, mostly because there is no easy way to deal with 8/8s, which if becomes popular could be fixed with a Big Game Hunter. All other control strategies tend to fall over to this deck because of its card advantage and Dragon syngergies. Play your threats wisely (weaker before bigger) and make profitable attacks for value. Try to save your Polymorphs for when you are really desperate or need to deal with a minion that is extremely hard to deal with (Sylvanas, Archmage Antonidas, Tirion, etc...). Setup your Duplicates to give you High Impact threats all while pressuring your opponent. Be sure to play around sweepers (especially Brawl - no more than 2 minions at a time).
Potential Changes:
-1 Nefarian
+1 Ysera
I would make this change if your finding yourself in need of more grind worthy cards in control matchups.
-1 Antique Healbot
-1 Coldarra Drake
+2 Illuminator
Seeing a lot of Hunters and Aggro? Maybe this would better suite your needs.
-1 Antique Healbot
+1 Big Game Hunter
A lot of Handlock in your personal Meta? I would either cut Antique Healbot, Explosive Sheep, or Twilight Guardian to make room for the big guns.
So far this is the only TGT Deck I've tested, but I'm having so much fun with it I'm not sure I want to start testing another strategy yet. It fills my "Dragon" (casual) needs and is highly competitive at the same time.

I have also just finished up a series of guides to help newer or budget players develop decks that can be purchased for under 2,000 Dust each (also Requires Naxxramas Unlocked) and compete with the current Meta enough to help you achieve your goal of High Ranks or even Legend.

Thank you for checking out this deck and I hope it does well for you,

As a control player your hand is very big, so a 6 mana 5/5 that reduces 7+ cards costs is insane.
I think Emperor is huge in this deck. There is a big difference in having the option to play Alex on turn 7-8 versus turn 9, not to mention reducing the cost of many of your other expensive dragons. Particularly with an ice block in place, it just makes you very difficult to finish off. I'm not as big of an Emperor fan as many others, but in this deck, I think he's an absolute must. I do wonder about replacing a flame strike with chillmaw, however ....
I am really having a lot of fun with this deck, I've lost games like everyone else but the deck is good, if I had to make changes it would probably be coldarra drake, it hasn't been useful to me, probably switch it out for sylvanas or chillmaw. Illuminator and duplicate have saved me from aggro decks.
the time coldarra was useful to me is when i was at turn 10 vs a hunter (thanks to Illuminator healing), i had coldarra and fallen hero, so i was able to do 10 dmg without attacking by my cards on the board, the thing is i was 20 hp or so, so maybe calling it useful is a wrong word, maybe it was a confirm to me controlling the game.
I am not using 100% the same card on this deck (70% of them or 80%) and i don't find its awkward, it has a point at least for me (not all the cards on it)
Frost Bolt: like most the mages, a skill to remove some early annoying cards
Explosive Sheep: while i didn't have a game to make the perfect use of it, for mage its a decent combo with your hero power for a 2 dmg aoe
Fallen Hero: While fallen hero is the scapegoat most the time , as the enemy can't accept the 2 damage hero power, he is a good tank without taunt :P and good effect when he stays alive
Duplicate: is the core of this build for me as it helped me on many fights to win, vs a warlock duplicating the silence owl helped me to ruin his 8/8 taunt monsters and finish him as they watch! and vs hunter illuminator was the king, and even fallen hero can continue to support your hero power thanks to this.
As i don't use ice block (I don't have the dust to create it, so i am using the 8 armor secret which is not a bad thing, the thing ice block means your illuminator can secure his/her healing as the secret will not be used enemy champion untill they do the killing blow
colddrake: while he demands much to be useful to you, it is a dragon to support your dragon effect cards
Flamestrike: we are mages
and i am lazy to comment about the other cards, but each of them support another card on the deck on a way or another.
Fantastic deck. I have had a lot of fun and success playing it. A little different play style and longer games than most of my aggro decks, but very fun. I had a few small changes below let me know what you think.
yes this deck was good for 1 day. this deck is literally terrible.
went 5-0 first. then went 1-10
deck seems hit an miss, so slow it gets very easy topdecked. basically if you dont get any illuminators you have already lost..
This deck is sick! Most opponents I go up against are totally thrown off because they always think it's either mech, tempo or maybe freeze mage. Then out comes these big ass dragons and all their synergy. Awesome deck again wingsofwax!
I'm running 60% winrate vs secret pallies... learn how to mulligan vs them...This deck is not hard to play
hello, is coldarra really worth having i dont seem to get much use from this card ? im thinking to change it for a kezan mystic cos of all the sectet pallys,,rate up if its good idea so i know plz :D
This deck looks good on paper to me, but it's just *not* working out for me. I own all the cards except Coldarra Drake, which I guess might help but doesn't seem absolutely essential (I replaced him with a Healbot for now). I feel like it gets off to such a slow start that I'm usually unable to recover against anything with either a decent amount of aggression or guys that are good sized for their cost. Face Hunter and Dragon Priest are both pretty nightmarish matchups in my relatively limited experience. Even Totem Shaman seems a little problematic.
It may just be a playstyle thing... I personally would feel better with some Blackwing Technicians and such in the deck though, maybe even a couple Refreshment Vendors to help recover from the early loss of tempo I seem to be experiencing quite often.
Also, side note, but Emperor Thaurissan seems fairly inessential in this deck to me. I realize that the curve is fairly high, but whenever I play him, he just amounts to a meat shield and a couple of Innervates over the course of my next turn or two. I'm fairly unenthused with him in this list at the moment.
Any advice? I suppose I should just watch a couple videos, but idk man. I feel like you need more ways to gain life in there or *something*...
hi! i like so much this dragon-mage, just coldarra in every game that I did not it was useful. what do you think about it?
This deck was way too slow. Replaced a good deal but mainly unstable ghouls and deathlord helped a lot. And personally think hungry dragons are way better the twillight ones. specially with so much hero power.
Edit: Completly forgot about blackwing. Changed deathlord out for those. Both work blackwing just adds more threat instead of slow.
This is a nice deck. I really like playing it, and I'm really succesfull with it. I just have problems with 2 classes: Hunter and Mage.
Hunter: FaceHunter is hard against this deck. I have less than 50% win against them. Actually all kinds of hunter have an advantage against this deck
Mage: I have no problem against freeze mage or mirror battles (dragon mage). But tempo mage or mech mage gets me most of the time.
I have defeated or had close battles against everyother deck. Thanks
Any tips on hunter and mech/tempo mage?
Gr8 deck. Won alot just with Illuminators and secrets. Thinking about replacing Nef with Ysera tho. Not getting value out of Nef plus BGH kills him ez. Also pulled 1 Coldarra and added Healbot but on the fence with that.
I went for a quirky tempo mage style build, using wyrm, mad scientist, flamewaker and counterspell/duplicate secrets. Ysera and chromaggus as finishers. I may be addicted to card draw though
hi why no chillmaw in this deck?
:( disgusting rofl. Not a chance. You'll lose every other game simply from having no Explos sheep to stop every zoolock/pally/hunter/tempo mage deck. Unstable portal is 5+mana to get a random minion in play (Costs 2 for spell, then minion is dropped 3, to a minimum cost of 0, but that's a very low percent usually the minion will cost 3 mana for a total average of 5 mana)
You have plenty of strong minoins and its not good in this deck. its only amazing in tempo mage because so much synergy.
Loothorders do nothing, they don't draw you extra cards or give you card advantage. Loot horder itself is a card, and it draws a card so for 2 mana you get a 2/1 body and replace itself with different card. Duplicate you get to double up on illuminators or your dragon taunters to super heal/sustain any aggro deck (90% of meta right now).
Effigy is a tempo card, has no place in this deck this is a LATEGAME deck and you adding cards that are early game aggression. Sure you can add those cards, but change the other 24 cards in deck to match it's aggro/tempo style.
Quite fun deck and very, very slow. I switched Illuminators and Twilight Drakes with Blackwing Technicians and Healbots.
