[Platinum to Legend] Circus Amalgam Dragon Hunter
Hi, my battle-tag is Wololo#1780, and I came back to HS after some months of break because of quarantine and stuff to bring you an old Galakrond classic, Dragon Hunter, with some spices from latest expansions, as a last goodbye before it rotates with the next expansion in 2021.
This deck had a 75% winrate with 48 wins and 16 losses from Platinum to Legend.
I hope it works for you too, and I won't said that I will make a guide if X upvote, because the guide is just below! But if you like this deck an upvote or a comment would be good so more people can know this deck and try it. Thanks!
EDIT: I make this replacements for December 2020 climb:
- 2 Adorable Infestation - 2 Wolpertinger
- 2 Faerie Dragon - 2 Evasive Feywing
+ 1 Tracking + 1 Deadly Shot
+ 1 Acidic Swamp Ooze + 1 Frozen Shadoweaver
+ 2 Hench-Clan Hogsteed + 2 Crimson Hothead
I made this changes with the hopes it helps a little bit against the meta, you can change whatever you feel its needed, like adding different techs or a Dragonbane or Veranus if you want.
------------------ Here the thematic of this deck, you can SKIP if you want ------
The new flavor to Dragon Hunter introduced by this new expansion:
The Circus:
Circus Amalgam is THE 4 drop that Dragon Hunter need it. A lot less conditional than Twilight Drake and Crimson Hothead. Yes its just a yeti with taunt but still just being a Dragon (it says All so it counts always as Dragon) is enough, and sometimes you can pull out crazy random stuff thanks to it having all types, like a random hunter spell you got that need a beast, or a random murloc you got somehow haha.
Circus Medic is to be honest the last change I made to this deck climbing and I really regret not have included it earlier. Its really the best answer to the worst aggro and control matchup and its even thematic for this expansion, with the Circus and the Corrupt.
Both help against aggro (taunt and healing) and against control (dragon activator and damage).
Its a cheap deck with only the typical two Stormhammer and 4 rares. Still its sad that you need 3 wings of Galakrond for Rotnest Drake, but I think its pretty irreplaceable for a Dragon deck.
--------------- END SKIP ---------
Mulligan:
Priority: Against aggro at least one 1 or 2 drop first. Then you can keep Stormhammer, Primordial Explorer or Scalerider.
Against control almost always Stormhammer, Primordial Explorer and as much dragons as you want.
With coin could be good idea to keep a Circus Amalgam against aggro or Rotnest Drake against control (especially vs Paladin and Druid).
---------------------------
Guide:
The play-style of this deck is similar to Dragon Warrior back in the day, you can both put pressure or/and control board with your weapon and minions that impact the board ASAP.
Most of the time control the board, as your biggest tempo swings (Rotnest Drake and enabled Stormhammer depend of it. But don't overcommit in board control sacrificing face damage. Remember than in Hunter a good defense is a good offense.
Tap as much as you can, if you have 6 mana is generally better a 4 mana play and tap that a 5 or 6 mana play, except is needed for board control. This way you are in a better position in case of losing board later to AOEs (the opponent is at lower health and you have something to play in your hand because you didn't empty it before)
Also when you can keep some dragons in hand, playing them one by one allow you to secure an infinite weapon and the so needed activators (of the dragon synergy cards).
--------------------------
Replacements / Techs:
Sorry but you can't replace the weapons, other than that almost all the deck is already super cheap.
You can add Dragonbane for extra damage, or replace Rotnest Drake with Krolusk Barkstripper or Deadly Shot if you don't have Galakrond.

Video (thanks to ManGawy)
Thanks to his video I made the change Faerie Dragon for Bonechewer Brawler. If you see his video you will see the Brawlers would have been better.

To finish:
Any question or suggestion you can write here or add my battletag Wololo#1780. See ya!
0/5, gets wrecked by every DH.
Can't do anything versus aggro.
I list some changes from the original deck for this season (December 2020) climb:
- 2 Adorable Infestation - 2 Wolpertinger
- 2 Faerie Dragon - 2 Evasive Feywing
+ 1 Tracking + 1 Deadly Shot
+ 1 Acidic Swamp Ooze + 1 Frozen Shadoweaver
+ 2 Hench-Clan Hogsteed + 2 Crimson Hothead
You can make any other change you want. Good luck!
I really liked this deck, but I had to exchange some cards.
Since I have to pay for Galakrond's Awakening to get Rotnest Drake, I switched to 2x Faceless Manipulator.
And those 2x Blazing Battlemage, were starting to look kind of useless, so I switched to 1x Mystery Winner and 1x Shimmerfly.
I achieved some good victories with these changes anyway.
Well its good to try new things always. Still I don't get the Faceless Manipulator in this deck, is a Paladin Tech?
Yes Blazing Battlemage is boring but is mainly here to prevent a bit early aggro snowballs. Still Mystery Winner could do the same if you roll an Explosive Trap, but you must have a bit of luck too.
Seems interesting, I would go for Deadly Shot against big minions but still seems good to try different things. Good luck!
Have you ever tried out running Frizz Kindleroost in the deck ? I feel like you have left him out for budget sake or does he actually suck ?
I have tried in the far past, if you want to include it I would say you must run the full dragon package.
So I would make this changes:
- 1 Acidic Swamp Ooze - 2 Bonechewer Brawler - 2 Circus Medic - 2 Scalerider
+ 1 Frizz Kindleroost + 2 Faerie Dragon + 2 Evasive Wyrm + 2 Evasive Drakonid
You could add some card draw if you want too, Hunter doesn't have much but maybe another Tracking or some Manafeeder Panthara to make profit of the Frizz discount, maybe taking out Frozen Shadoweaver but remember that the DH matchup is hard enough even with them in the deck. Also they can work as a freezing trap for a turn too against big minions while you clean the field for a Rotnest Drake kill. So there is that too.
Try it if you want and tell me how it works, I hope it does because I remember Frizz was fun at release.
im gonna try it im currently on dia 10 so best area to try out new stuff ^^
epic deck bro, made a video showcase, hope u like it, feel free to add it to the post
right now i will try to hit legend with it and post another video of it <3
Wow really good job man, thanks for the highlight. I will upload it in the deck now.
Also I see now thanks to your video that the Faerie Dragon are not needed as much as I thought, and in some of your matches would have been better with Bonechewer Brawler.
So I think I'll make this change, and your video also is a good proof of the motive of this change.
Again thanks for that, and good luck in your climb!
Next weekend im gonna try and grind legend, this deck can do it in no time :)
Added a small trap package with 2x Phase Stalker 2x Explosive Trap and 2x Pack Tactics and of course Dragonbane.
Minus Scalerider and the anti-weapon tech.
(Always hated Scalerider, found it inferior to Burrowing Scorpid but maybe that's just me)
I know it contradicts the dragon theme, but explosive trap is a lifesaver against Aggro (and 2 damage to face), and Pack Tactics gives you an extra dragon sometimes. Opponent will go for trades to protect their big guy from your explorer, or because they can't target the others with spells, so it's more free stormhammer swings.
Best games are turn 1 Demonic Companion or Intrepid Initiate, turn 2 coin into Stormhammer and swing, turn 3 Primordial Explorer and then continue to swing every turn, dropping a new dragon whenever they kill the last. Good to save one in hand for Rotnest or Corrosive Breath activation.
Curious to try Polekelt in here, since that would guarantee Rotnest Rotnest for the next two turns...
Yeah it may be needed it, I played a similar deck successfully in May:
https://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1349884-tempo-dragon-hunter-d5-legend
It had Burrowing Scorpid first but I cut it later for Bone Wraith. The Scorpids are good but still in a lot of situations the Scalerider are better. Still is a good inclusion, maybe instead of the Circus Medic.
It didn't have Explosive Trap because I relied more in the Bone Wraith + Pack Tactics combo against DH. And if you could add Guardian Augmerchant and Bonechewer Brawler you would have the full pack, but it may be hard in this deck as it has too much "must include" already.
I didn't include legendaries to keep the deck as cheap as possible (sadly Rotnest Drake is not so cheap already) but yes, both legendaries you mentioned are really good.
I'm trying a mid-control hunter with secrets and some few legendaries (not a highlander but may could go well) and if I get to Legend with it I'll upload it later, if you like that style.
Thanks for the good suggestions, and good luck with your climb!
don't play this)))
Now that you said it I'll have to play DH or Pala then. Sorry for trying to make something else work.
(Well at least it worked well for me last climb, proof's above).
Thoughts against Evolve shaman? I feel like I keep the board clear, freezing face to delay the hares evolving, but I can't keep up. Feels good against some other decks though
Mulligan hard for early curve and Stormhammer and trade almost always, try to play Circus Amalgam when you can to make their 4 attack weapon less effective. Then pressure face so when they get taunts from evolve you can finish it from hand.
I see you added the blazing battle mage, acidic ooze & frozen shadow weaver. I also run the battlemage think it's a great call. I was running ooze but removed it for the shadow weavers. Maybe both is the right call. I am liking the shadow weaver over ooze if just running one of them.
I taked back 1 Tracking and 1 Ooze for the faerie dragons, maybe too much tech is bad too haha. And yes ooze its not so good because it always comes when they have no more weapons.
I made some changes in the deck to adapt to this meta climb (December 2020), it may be not the best but I would keep changing them if needed. Any suggestion of changes that you think could work comment it here if you want. The changes are specified in the deck. Good luck!
I do like both battlemages, one ooze and one tracking for tech. The rest I'm not sure about.
The faerie dragons are nice because I've had people waste aoe spells just to kill that one minion. Plus it's a dragon so it helps with the other cards that need a dragon in your hand.
Demon companion is nice on turn 1 also.
