Hi friends!
Tommy Wave here with the first in what will hopefully be a series on budget decks. While I don't profess to be the best player, I have had a few friends talk to me about budget decks lately and figured I'd try and help y'all out!
The first class I'll be taking a look at is Priest, and boy was it a fun one! Before we get into things, lets establish some loose criteria for the series.
Criteria:
- No set dust limit.
We don't want to set an arbitrary number to go by, but still be conscious of how much we are spending and provide downgrade/sidegrade options when available. We also want to generally steer clear of Epics and Legendaries. - Focus on the CORE of a deck.
Let's define the absolute necessities of the deck. Identify what the strongest cards are and build around that. - Have a reasonable upgrade path.
Using budget versions of existing archetypes provides players with the ability to spend more dust to have a 'complete' deck. This way, if someone enjoys the deck or has more resources, they get more bang for their buck! - Prioritize cards that aren't rotating.
A new season is almost upon us and it's a smart idea to avoid crafting those year of the kraken cards. We want our dust to go long AND strong!
With that in mind, let's take a look at the core of combo priest;
The Core:
2 Inner Fire
2 Northshire Cleric
2 Power Word: Shield
2 Divine Spirit
2 Radiant Elemental
2 Kabal Talonpriest
You can watch the video above for a more in depth talk on these cards, but they are our most impactful and important pieces. Start with these if you are crafting your own version!
The Expensive stuff:
2 Duskbreaker
2 Twilight Drake
One of the most powerful early game sweepers ever made, Duskbreaker is too good to pass on! While I think Drakonid Operative is stronger than Twilight Drake, it rotates out soon and the drake is more flexible. If you have the dust though, definitely slot some Operatives in over the Scalebanes! Speaking of;
Meat on the bones:
2 Netherspite Historian
2 Novice Engineer
2 Acolyte of Pain
2 Tar Creeper
2 Cobalt Scalebane
If the core is a deck's skeleton, this stuff is the muscle! Once again, check out the video for some more in-depth talk. Here we round out our Dragon package and include some draw to dig for our combo pieces.
Flex slots:
1 Silence
1 Potion of Madness
1 Kooky Chemist
1 Spellbreaker
This is the combination of 'flex' cards that I settled on, but you should customize things to your liking! If those aggro decks are giving you trouble, a second potion of madness with go a long way. Kooky Chemist is a cheaper version of Crazed Alchemist, if you have one then swap it over.
Feedback:
Think this deck is too far out of your budget? Got some card suggestions? Had some good/ terrible luck with the list? Let me know! This project will be ongoing and I'm always looking for ways to improve.
I'm also looking for suggestions on the next deck for the series! You can hit me up here on Hearthpwn or at Twitter.
I see this deck is now wild, tommy are you planning to adapt it to the new expansion so that it can be played in standard again?
I have! You can check out the deck over HERE!
Hey! I have Anduin Shadowreaper owreaper and Velen, can they fit in this deck? And any replacement for Netherspite Librarian? Ty!
Anduin is interesting, maybe cut one of the flex cards? A few people have had luck with Faerie Dragon instead of Netherspite. Good luck!
I love this series! Keep up the good work. (And I hope you will help us out for the new expansion as well. Would be great ;-) ) It's perfect if you want to learn something about deck building with your descriptions about cores and stuff. It actually helped me a ton.
P.S.: Got Lyra the Sunshard yesterday and it's a perfect addition for this Priest. The deck is now a little bit more like the one from Orange and not that budget anymore but really, really fun.
Cheers!
Thanks for the support! I'll definitely come back to things once the next set is out.
Congrats on the Lyra, certainly fits in and is a ton of fun to play with! Good luck!!
Is there any fair replacement for Netherspite Historian? I ignored ONIK and I don't want to unlock all the andventure now
A few people have suggested Faerie Dragon and seem to be having some luck with it!
Can I swap Kooky, Potion of Madness, and Kabal Talonpriest with some other cards that won't get rotated out in a month? It doesn't sound like it's worth crafting them now but I do want a cheap ladder deck. I finished all of Karazhan, but would prefer to only craft cards from the expansions that aren't getting rotated out this year. For Kooky replacement, I'm thinking Crazed Alchemist (which I already have), not sure about others.
those are common cards, i would craft them as they are really really good and they costt so little, you will earn the dust back in two or thress days, but can enjoy playing them for at least a month. (i'd craft at least the talon priests (they are core to the deck!) and the potion). thatst not a waste but a really good deal :) one pack of cards is worth 100 dust on average. that means four commons is the equivalent of only 2 packs or two-three quests or one quest, a few wins and the first tavern brawl win of the week :)
Alchemist is a great swap for Kooky (I actually suggest it in the writeup!) but the others are tough. Smite is great for early board control and Unidentified Elixir could help with the toughness buffs!
This is the first deck i decided to craft... EVAH! and i love playing it! not even seen your vid or absorbed the description entirely and already won some matches just goofing around. Thank you very much! New to HS, playing since a week. Just got to rank 20, now aiming to gain some more progesssion. Now off to the beamer to watch your vid and enjoy my last beer for the night :D
That's awesome to hear mate! Glad you're enjoying the experience and hope you can climb up the ranks, good luck!
Yep, got to 18 in a few hours of playing and experimenting (for me thats a milestone) and still loving it. I watched your vid and it was a great help! And now got some better cards, i crafted shadow visions which helps a lot. Maybe you can give me some advice: i have Dragon Stone since the first pack i opened. Would that be a good adition? I think it might be because this deck is heavy on spells and it happens quite often that i play 3 in a turn. The combo strategy can also be changed then, since because you get more board control when doing the combo +x, divine, inner, the dragon provides better board presence, allowing the combo to be used earlier in game (and more often) so not aiming for the OTK anymore? This is my first attempt at strategizing so be easy on me if it is bollocks ;)
That's great, the shadow visions will really help!
Regarding Dragon Soul, It might be a reasonable addition! The only concern would be that it's a card that gets value over a long time and the deck is more suited to trying to end the game quickly, or at least sandbagging until you can combo off. Give it a shot and let me know!
Went 13-4 from rank 20 to 15 in Standard, good starting budget deck for casual players. I swapped out the Cobalt Scalebanes for a Drakonaid Operative and Kabal Songstealer, or two Operatives. Lost to two shamans, one evolve, the other elemental, devolve screwed me both times, meanwhile the other two loses were mostly from missplays.
That's a great record! Songstealer is another strong option in the Scalebane slot for sure.
can i put the Marin the fox and Crazed Alchemist combo on this deck?
That sounds pretty fun to be honest! If you've got the cards, go for it! Awesome suggestion!
I made some slight adjustments in -1 twilight drake -1 spellbreaker -2 netherspite historian for +1 acidic swamp ooze +1 kooky chemist +1 mass dispel and +1 potion of madness
