So a class cycle is a widely-accepted term for a card type shared by all classes, like spellstones, or "studies" cards.

You may use cast when drawn on spells as it was retroactively added to Beneath the Grounds.

The latter, I didn't make it clear enough in the challenge, it seems.

Hmmm, what if someone decides to put their class in GvG? Asking just theoritically, not that I plan to do that.

Then I will need to create a special challenge for them. It would be very similar though.

The Custom Class Competition is back for its eighth iteration! Veterans and newcomers are welcome as we kick off the first Hearthpwn Class Competition post-Core Set!

This is the Submission Thread! Discussion here is not allowed as this is where contestants will submit their custom class cards.

Unfortunately, JollyCroquet, LivingOrganism, and wintrmute scored the lowest during Week Two, and they are eliminated.

There should have been 4 eliminations, but there was a large tie for 4-last place so only 3 eliminations took place.

This is where you submit your cards!
    The Discussion Thread is here.

    Posting Tutorial

This is a posting tutorial for the website imgur.com. If you use another website, the process will be similar.

    1. It is recommended you use hearthcards.net to create your cards. Save the generated card to your device.
    2. Upload the image to imgur.com. You do not need an account.
    3. After your image is uploaded, many links will be generated. Find the "Direct link". It will have a .jpg or .png at the end of the link. Copy the link.
    4. On your hearthpwn post, find the "Insert/edit image" button:
    5. Paste the direct link. This is recommended but not mandatory: You may choose to make the image smaller by changing the image dimensions.

    Overview

    1. All contestants will create one custom class, following the layout of Demon Hunter.
    2. The contest will run for 5 weeks.
      1. Week One: 10 Basic cards.
        • This contest, as Demon Hunter introduced Rush and Lifesteal into the Basic Set keyword pool, the list of keywords you are allowed to use is as follows:
        • Battlecry, Taunt, Charge, Rush, Poisonous, Divine Shield, Windfury, Spell Damage, Freeze, Deathrattle, Silence, Stealth
        • The following keywords are banned. Discover: It is strange for a new player starting out with a Basic set to be discovering from cards they have no idea of. Secret: Complex mechanic, requires at least 3 out of 10 of your slots. Class keywords: Blizzard is pretty clear about saving these for Initiate. Immune and Counter: Far too niche to have a place in Basic.
      2. Week Two: 10 "Initiate" cards.
        • "Initiate" means the supplemental 20 cards Blizzard printed for Demon Hunter. Yours do not have to be named Initiate.
      3. Week Three: The other 10 "Initiate" cards.
      4. Week Four: Your pre-Core expansion cards.
      5. Week Five: Core Set consolidation + 15 post-Core expansion cards.

Be sure to read over Rules & Information section as there is a lot to go over this contest due to the complex shifts caused by the introduction of the Core Set.

    Submission Format

You must adhere to the following submission rules or risk disqualification:

    1. Unless otherwise stated, you are allowed three cards to showcase. All other cards must be hidden in a spoiler.
    2. You are also allowed to show off a tooltip featuring your custom keyword. To make a tooltip, head over here.
    3. You may include flavour texts. For the showcase cards, their texts do not need to be spoilered.
    4. All tokens must be in a spoiler.
    5. You may include a single banner at the top of your submission post. It may not be overly fancy. This is entirely subjective and the moderators have the right to remove a banner they feel is too fancy and, therefore, gives an inherent advantage over other posts.
      1. Golden cards are not allowed, nor are huge images that feature your cards with a background.
      2. If you choose to include other images other than a banner, they must be hidden behind a spoiler.
    • Flavour text is allowed behind a spoiler.
    • Golden cards are not allowed.

    Challenges

    Week Three has two challenges:

    1. If your legendary minion costed more than 5 last week, this week's legendary minion must cost less than 5, and vice versa. If your legendary minion costed exactly 5, you are exempt from this challenge.
    2. One of your minions must have three keywords. (example: Illidari Felblade)

    Rules & Information

    • How is the Initiate set split in half?
      • There are 8 commons, 6 rares, 4 epics, and 2 legendaries. That makes splitting the Initiate set in half rather easy.
      • For Weeks Two and Three, contestants will create 4 commons, 3 rares, 2 epics, and 1 legendary.
    • What does pre-Core expansion mean?
      • You may select any expansion before the Core set was introduced! Anything from GvG all the way up to Darkmoon Faire is up for grabs.
    • What does post-Core expansion mean?
      • Either Forged in the Barrens or United in Stormwind.
    • What do I do about class cycles?
      • You must have at least one all-class cycle from your chosen expansions. All-class, in this context, means both a cycle shared between all 9 classes, or a cycle that the League of EVIL classes or Explorers classes share.
      • While, at first, it seems to make sense that your custom class should adhere to all all-class cycles in a given expansion, Demon Hunter, for example, did not have a Prime legendary, therefore you only need to use one such cycle.
    • What about card cycles not shared between all nine classes, like Studies spell cards, or Aspirant cards?
      • You may pick and choose from those, these are not mandatory.
    • What about Hero Cards?
      • So after much debate and discussion, Hero Cards are allowed with an asterisk. More information will be given, but for now, take note that they are only allowed in Week Three.
    • Can I rename the "Initiate" set to whatever I want?
      • Yes.
    • What watermarks do I use?
      • For the "Initiate" set, you can use whatever watermark you think makes the most sense. There is a list of watermarks here.
    • Do I have to follow the rarity distribution of the Demon Hunter Initiate set?
      • Yes.
      • You may not introduce a Legendary spell, weapon, or Hero in the Initiate set as there are none in the current Demon Hunter example we've been given.
    • Do I need to adhere to Warcraft lore?
      • During this contest, I will be experimenting with asking contestants to integrate a little bit more Warcraft lore into their submissions. However, for the most part, you will be free to ignore Warcraft lore.
    • Do I need class-exclusive keyword?
      • No.
    • Can I do a Monk or Death Knight class?
      • No.
    • Can I create my own spell school or minion tribe?
      • We'll try this out this competition: Yes, you can.

    Competition Process

    Week 1: July 7th - July 14th
    Week 2: July 17th - July 24nd
    Week 3: July 25rd - August 1st
    Week 4: August 2nd - August 9th
    Week 5: August 10th - August 17th

All threads close at 3 AM, EST. There may be delays due to United in Stormwind being released. I also do have some overnight shifts at my workplace, so I will give 24 hours notice if there needs to be a delay.

    Challenges

Week Two has only two challenges for everyone, but specially tailored challenge(s) for Annorei and JollyCroquet as they scored the lowest. Conversely, congratulations to Klipce, who has earned immunity through to Week Three!

    1. One of your cards needs a double digit number somewhere, be it in the card text, mana cost, or health/attack.
    2. You must state which expansion during which your class is introduced in Hearthstone. Then, you must create an epic card that uses a mechanic (not a keyword) introduced in a past expansion, much like Nethrandamus does.
      • For example, you introduce your class during MSoG. You can then use Jousting from TGT, holding a Dragon from BRM, etc.

    JollyCroquet:

    1. You introduced only a single form of class playstyle (shuffling cards) in your Basic set, whereas most Basic sets try to diversity class identity by giving tools that support multiple playstyles and archetypes. Your challenge is to create at least 3 cards that form the base of an entirely new archetype within your class.

    Annorei:

    1. You had a lot of 4-line cards for a Basic Set. You can only create 2 cards with 4 lines for this week.
    2. Like JollyCroquet, your class mostly focused only on a single line of playing, healing your hero and minions. However, you don't even include that many simple, direct healing in your class. That being said, you already have so many cards that hinge on healing. As such, your challenge is to make 2 cards that restore Health but also support a different archetype, whether it be your rushing minions or your poisonous ones, or something else entirely.

Slapping an effect on a card or minor tweaks doesn't necessarily mean it is lazy or uninspired, after all, your unleash the whelps is basically the same as unleash the hounds. And I actually disagree with you, the basic set is not meant to be weak, it is meant to be simple. You wouldn't call fireball weak, blessing of kings weak, or holy nova weak.

I think at the end of the day, also being a player that knows every card and has been creating custom cards for honestly way too long lmao, it just so happens to be differing card design philosophies. I see the direction the game is heading in, much stronger cards (large powercreep like new Alex and illidari inquisitor vs king krush all the way to minor powercreep like spawnpool forager vs Murmy and possessed villager) more synergy between cards to the point of entire archetypes, that sort of thing. It comes down to knowing how far you can push your cards, the difference being your class will be mediocre in terms of power and may not have the tools to compete, vs you go too far, like what blizz did with DH. We shall see what the voters have to say, I suppose.

While a lot of your feedback is valid, the fact is that balance just isn't the same as it used to be. There has been a fair bit of powercreep over the last few expacs, so one-to-one comparisons are still useful, but not always the end all be all. If you use only old cards and don't take into consideration the current meta and card power levels, your class will be... "too fair".

Even Blizzard acknowledges this with their buffs to basic cards in the core set, and some of them still don't see play. Instead of using older cards as something set in stone, I would just look at the card and give it a sanity check. For example, excess chitin compared to iron hide. Iron hide saw absolutely 0 play and was printed many years ago, so it stands to reason excess chitin should cost 1 rather than 2, which would make it unplayable. Conversely, if you make it 4 armor, then you have to consider Armor Vendor. Yes it gives the opponent 4 armor as well, but giving a faster opponent 4  armor when you are trying to slow down their fast damage means your armor is worth more than theirs. A 1/3 is also a very strong turn 1 play that develops the board, unlike a 0/1.

    Larva Token

Zag'arak is a Vizier, a high ranking official of the Black Empire. She commands both endless skittering swarms of Larvae, Drones, and other small insects as well as towering Aqir, Qiraji, and Nerubian. Being insectoid herself means strong chitinous Armor and her ties with the Old Gods, coupled with her race's natural abilities, grants her powerful healing.

The Vizier Basic Set introduces most of the core playstyles (creating wide boards, gaining and spending Armor, healing) and offers a preview of two mechanics (creating large minions, bouncing minions) that will be explored in the Initiate set and later expansions.
