Hello everybody! This topic is for discussion of Week #36 of our Weekly Card Design Competition. One of the awesome things about this competition is that it gets us all talking about what makes a card balanced, fun, realistic, interesting, unique, innovative, exciting, and more. However, to make sure that everything runs smoothly, we need to reserve the Submission Topic for submissions only. Everything else goes here. What is everything else, you might ask?
Rules or Process. Do you have a question about the competition's process? Do you need clarification about one of this week's entry requirements? Are you not sure whether your entry adhered to the rules? Ask here!
Feedback or Ideas. Do you have some ideas you'd like to run by others before settling on one? Do you need help balancing or wording your card? Do you need help finding art that will fit your card? Or do you just want feedback from the community on your entry? You're in the right place! Remember, although you are allowed to make minor tweaks to your entry after you've submitted it, you're only allowed one submission per week, so make sure that you've settled on your card for sure beforehand.
Discussion! Do you have thoughts on other people's cards? Are there directions you don't like that you're seeing too many people take? Or directions you'd like to see more people take? Would you like to help others and contribute to a greater community understanding of Hearthstone card design and balance? This is where you want to be!

Advertising Your Card. This is a new rule during Season 2. Please don't pop in here just to advertise your card only to never be heard from again. This includes only asking short, generic, or insincere questions like "Thoughts?" or "Do you think this is balanced?". Yes, getting feedback on your card is one of the purposes of this topic, but we're not just here for other people to help you. We're here for you all to help each other. 12 hours after this competition begins, there should be plenty of other posts here for you to give specific feedback or for you to comment on a trend. If you post your card for feedback after this time and do not also offer some form of substantial commentary, critique, or praise of others' work, you may find your post deleted.
Plagiarism. Many people post their ideas here before finalizing them in the submission topic. Directly plagiarizing those ideas to post in the submission topic yourself is absolutely not acceptable.
So, without further ado, have fun and get creating!
Here is an idea I came up with. I'm not sure if mulligan is the right term in Hearthstone? The effect is the same as at the beginning of a match, where you can shuffle any number of cards into your deck and draw that many replacements. I could right that out, but if mulligan is understandable, it's much more concise. I tried to balanced the mana cost, but I am not sure how much taking a mulligan is worth. You take it after you cast this card, which means your hand is smaller, and it may not be as effective as at the beginning of the game. Or it could be more effective if you have a lot of cards. In the late game, this card will pretty much only replace itself.
I also considered calling the card something like Second Chance or Fresh Start. It was much easier to find art for Meditation though. What do people think? I could look harder for some less druid-y art when I have the chance.

Thanks, that does sound like a better way of putting it. Do you have any idea if that is what Blizzard calls it? Also, any thoughts on balance?
And gratz on becoming a mod? Pretty sure you weren't one yesterday.

To my knowledge, Blizzard doesn't call it anything at the moment, so your wording is probably fine.
Hello, all! Asylum has asked me to help manage the card design competitions, so feel free to send me a message if you have any concerns about the competition. This includes if others are breaking the rules, or you don't understand the rules yourself. Good luck :)
I have two ideas based on racial abilities of Blood and Night Elves, which one is better?
Since priest is onlyone who has mass silence spell, your Arcane Torrent goes basically against one of the rules (suggestions?) - dont step on what makes a class different from others.
Not sure the otherone would even work, but if it did i guess its fine, mby a bit undercosted, since it will cycle itself and potentialy stop a crapload of dmg, on average (depends how u use it) more then usual healing spells and can be even timed to prevent death next turn and let u have one more turn to finish off your opponent ... so mby at least 3 mana.
@yumyum36 your wording seems a bit rough - if your text is so long you want to cut small words, it is probably too long. Nice idea, but i don't like it as a neutral spell, would be good for priest.
€dit: perhaps: "Randomize the control of all minions. Don't change the amout of minions per player."
------- After my last card got a bit strong, i hope i submitted no undercosted card again. Should it be 6 mana? But keep all the restrictions in mind that go with a murloc deck.
Suppose we have to be a bit harsh on the spells, since they r neutral, but man how often are u gonna have a hand full of murlocs? they r cheap and by T5 ur almost in topdeck mode in most of the murloc decs, not to mention u should have already won/lost the game.

I would say both are kind of stepping into specific classes' territory. Arcane Torrent feels a lot of Mage and Priest spells. Silencing spells are pretty limited right now, so I am not sure it's a good for a neutral spell. Shadowmeld seems more appropriate, although getting Stealth through spells is kind of rogue's thing. Also, it seems kind of powerful relative to Ice Block. It does basically the same thing for one less mana and a card draw. Ice Block's effect is probably better, since it activates when you need it to, but Shadowmeld should probably cost more, and maybe get rid of the card draw. I'm also not sure giving every class an Ice Block-like card would be good.

5 is probably about the right cost for this. Murloc decks go through murlocs pretty fast, so you will probably have 2-3 in your hand when you cast it, unless you're holding them back, which I don't think is a great strategy. You could use it to cast a more efficient Flamestrike (probably wouldn't happen that often), but you could also get unlucky and end up casting an inefficient Consecration (that doesn't hit the hero).
I really like the idea of having all Professions available as BASIC cards in the game, which all do something not too overly fancy at are slightly overcosted.
I could go the easy way and just do a "Gain a random Profession."-card and design 11 cards, but creating unnecessary card-gaining cards is something I actively hate about these contests and I despise most entries that go that cheesy and easy route to garner votes.
So instead I just chose one as example:
Others could be for example "Profession: Alchemy - Swap the health of two minions." or "Profession: First Aid - At the end of your next 3 turns restore 3 Health to your hero." or something.

I like shadowmeld just a little more, though I'm probably a little biased because of my night-elf main back in WoW. Using Racial abilities though is probably one of the best bets for what would be a neutral spell. that doesn't step on the toes of the actual classes.

Yeah, professions would probably make for great neutral spells. though, I wonder how people would make gathering professions like mining and herbalism work...

I would only include "production" professions and the secondary professions: Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, Jewelcrafting, Inscription, Tailoring, Secondary: Fishing, First Aid and Cooking.
I have no clue what the Archaeology profession does, so I left it out.

Here's my idea for this week:
What stirs beneath the sands...
Sands of Ahn'Qiraj: A Custom Hearthstone Adventure
I think that if you word it "Mulligan your hand", it would be a little more understandable.

And thanks :) I became one this morning

@YoThats Arcane Torrent seems cooler.
Any ideas on how to better word this? Or should I just simplify it down to "randomize control of all minions" and change the mana cost.
@yumyum36 I think that's about as good of wording you can get.

Alright. It's pretty late here in Holland, so my brain ain't all that 100% anymore. SO here are some 'simplistic' effects for neutral spells.
(Won't work if you and/or the enemy don't have any minions)
EDIT: Here's one I came up with just now:
Give a man a Murloc, and he'll eat for a day.
Give him a Murloc Knight, and people will hate him.
I would say both are kind of stepping into specific classes' territory. Arcane Torrent feels a lot of Mage and Priest spells. which one, guys? is it more balanced to give the opponent a chance to discard it instead of continuing the cycle?
