Not EXACTLY, as summoning 5 or higher star monsters by normal means requires you to have board presence and to destroy it in exchange for the monster (as minions in Yu-Gi-Oh are called "monsters" for those reading who don't know). Also, you can only normal summon a single monster in a turn unless you use some type of effect to circumvent that.
Every monster also basically has Taunt.
Honestly, special summons got so insane and tribute summons (monarchs only) got so op that the "one normal summon per turn" rule barely mattered. But the taunt thing is honestly a really solid point
War (the one played with poker cards) sometime in the 1970s...
But for CCGs Magic the Gathering. I first played it about 6 months before it was released at a convention in Seattle. WOTC had some sample cards and was doing demos to generate pre-orders for the game. I ordered two starters and 4 boosters, or something along those lines.
A little while later I won the second DCI Magic tournament playing Blue/Red. Lots of Power Leaks and Psychic Venom along with Prodigal Sorcerers, red damage spells, and dragon whelps. Nearly everyone in the tournament played circles of protection so it was easy to power leak and Venom people into paralysis. At that point, there were no deck construction rules other than 40 card minimum size but folks hadn't really figured out how to play cutthroat yet. Fun times those...
I think I've played around 20 CCGs, though Magic and Legend of the Five Rings were the two I went deep down the rabbit hole with.

Magic the gathering 7th edition. My uncle bought them when I was just a kid, but I thought thorn elemental was the coolest thing ever
No way! I got the same package. Thorn Elemental was the killer! :D
It was my start. I played magic till mirrodin in 2003. After i moved and started studiing i met some friends who occasionaly did some drafting with newer sets. But besides this and the obvious pokemon collection in preschool i ditched all tcg since hearthstone :)
This gives me flashbacks :D and how we looked down and laughed at those who thought Yu-Gi-Oh was cool. We knew magic was way better :) Nothing beats the artwork of old magic cards.

You are totally correct on all points! I stopped after 7th but picked it back up for a few blocks (mirrodin, kamigawa, and ravnica).. I think Mirrodin was my favorite! unfortunately, I had to quit because it was so financially demanding. At least with Hearthstone, you can get gold and dust to make stuff instead of spending way too much money (which is easy to do in this game too). I'm thinking of trying out Gwent more since I love Witcher 3, but I've invested so much time and energy in my HS collection. Even with the bs RNG, this game is incredibly fun :)
First card game? Pokemon! I collected the cards like all the other little elementary schoolers but didn't actually play it ever (none of us knew how). Wasn't really until I started playing Magic the Gathering in High School that I actually learned how to play a card game!
