Valid points, but you're missing the bigger picture here. Did Frodan get his wallet back?
That could actually be kind of funny. However irony is a hard thing on the internet, especially when emotions starts to roll high. If we all had this conversation IRL we would have been able to see if this was a try to lighten the mood or if you just want to fan the flames. I try to give benefit of the doubt on the Internet but I don't know , man, are you trolling us?
Well, I say we should try to do the right thing, lead by example and very much try to understand each other by communicating and be (gently) curious of one another. But the internet is a hard thing and your non illintended words can hurt a lot, thick skin or not.
There's a sad, reprehensible and vocal minority in gaming that is disrespectful and hateful...and based on their responses whenever anyone calls them on it, they think they are the majority.
I'm fairly certain the majority of that portion of the community are kids, and if they think this shit flies in the real world they better prepare for a rude awakening. Seriously, how hard is it to just be cool and respectful?
I don't watch much twitch, but when I do watch a stream or two I almost immediately close the chat tab. How can people stand that stupid crap? There are some streamers like Hafu, who manage their chats but when you get in those channels where people think its funny to spam the same 3 kappa/smorc emotes.....
The bottom line is, comments on a public twitch broadcast should be sub only (can everyone watch and only subs comment?) that way people can be held at least semi-accountable to what they say. And comments like oh hay its kobe bryant, are one thing and I get that people will make bad or stupid jokes, but the needlessly racist and hateful comments are bad for everyone. When big news programs and people who have never played video games or heard of twitch see this news story, they will just think "hmm all hearthstone people must be racists assholes..."
So yes I do think its a big deal, no I don't think that someone's personal twich channel matters that much and who cares if the chat there is a cesspool, but the chat on a "broadcast tournament" needs to be cleaned up if twitch ever wants to consider itself a legit platform for things like this.
Can you imagine if there was a NBA/NFL game with live unchecked comments were broadcasts by ESPN or NBC? Would not happen.
Look, people, I will be dead honest with you and if you don't like it, well sor...erm...astonishing!
Twitch chat is the most toxic thing that I have ever seen in my entire life. This is not just about Hearthstone but other games as well like LoL and DOTA. Have you seen the things that chat says on LoL streams? However, nobody talks about that. Streamers have been insulted on daily basis, called all kinds of things and a good portion of them were ''raided'' by the chat. Twitch chat is capable of some pretty deprived shit and its users won't hold back on ANYONE. However, you don't really hear about that that often, do you? You don't make a big fuss about when someone gets swatted (this was a BIG DEAL before) or when a 4chan crew raids a stream and causes the streamer to have a break down on camera because ''it is fun lol''. No, you don't hear about that so often yet twitch chat does deprived shit all the time, but we mostly ignore it because we are used to it but YOGG FORBID that a black man gets called a monkey and a thief by twitch chat. :O
That just won't stand! We must rally against twitch chat, moderate it and punish the offenders! Bring the torches! Unleash the dogs of war! What's that? A twitch raid is happening on X stream? An asian dude gets insulted by f0rsenboys? Private info of X streamer got leaked? Someone got swatted? Fuck them, we must save this poor black boy from being insulted. Deprived shit only counts when it is done to black people, you noobs.
My point is that it is twitch chat and it is capable of some nasty shit. If you've ignored much worse in the past, don't be a hypocrite and grab your pitchforks because a black guy got called a monkey.
''But Yogg, thing about his feelings. How did he feel?''
How did other people who weren't black and had it even worse felt? Nobody gives a shit because that doesn't count, right?
For Yogg's sake, just let it go.
If reincarnation is a thing, you are in for a treat.
It's always sad to see threads like this go from meaningful conversations to trolls trying to get a response out of people that actually care. Oh well, thank goodness for the people that actually care, they get stuff done.
QFT on both Novblast and Praise_YoggSaron's posts. Dead on with both posts.
DTBlack, I took your advice on not quoting posts and your post made me laugh. I'd use an apology emote but they took that away, so the best I can give you is the replacement which is... Wow, that's incredible!
I'll be reincarnated as a black guy and get insulted on twitch? :O Yea, a figured as much, fml -.-
You make it sound so minor, but that's not the extent of how you are going to be treated your entire life by other people. Being denied opportunities and connections to people you could've really gotten along with, just because of skin color.
Saying offensive words towards someone and actually having racial bias that effects your judgement towards someone are two different things. Granted this is a heated debate that's probably as old as people have pondered their innate differences. Regardless while trying to stay neutral no matter what dream hack tires to do to solve community issues will arise in problems. Sub chat or no chat much like Nintendo uses will spark flames over user freedom, input and an insulting feeling of personal persecution that they aren't trusted to talk in chat even though its just a sweeping generalization. Too much freedom and people will spout whatever they want. I don't think there really is a clear win-win solution here for both sides. Community issues generally have to leave someone out :/.
The solution to all of this is simple- better moderation. Nobody cares so much about being racist that they're gonna keep creating accounts just to get one message through. They do this just to get a bunch of idiots following them, and the idiots copy the stupid racist crap other people are doing just so they can be a part of something. That's why once it gets out of hand, it gets way out of hand.
Sounds like their moderators for this event were just a sh*t show of whoever happened to volunteer with no central leadership or guidelines. Twitch also needs to give them more power, let them ban an abusers IP address or shut them out from watching the stream for 10 minutes. There's always gonna be a few assholes that try to ruin the chat, shut them down at the source and don't let them accumulate a bunch of followers and it's possible to keep this stuff under control.
This is the most popular thread today. There are thousands of views and mostly positive messages. We need to send a letter to Dreamhack. There is power in numbers. Does anyone have Dreamhack's emails or contact information? We can translate our energy into action and impact.
Share the polygon article and let your friends be aware of this problem. I've been talking to trolls in the thread one on one in private message and we had good conversations. I didn't approach them in a accusative fashion and we ended up getting along. I think they saw my humanity and changed their tone. That's what this is about, it's about seeing each other's humanity.
When i begin this fight I have 0 illusion that we can stop all racism. But through all history there have been the complacent and the fighters. I rather be a fighter and make the world better little by little. When MLK fought against desegregation, with rosa parks, and the Freedom Riders, the obstacles they fought seemed insurmountable and unstoppable. But they chose to be fighters not the complacent. If they can do all they did, then we can get the simple task of having dreamhack be sub mode only with an increase in moderators.
If i had a company thats is doing such a huge event i would probably turn the chat off. On the other hands it's freedom of speach, you are sensivite - you loose. Cruel reality sorry.
Being complacent is what keep your "reality" that way. Slavery was the norm in 1862, but people fought and changed that. Racism is an extension, and while there are more verbal assaults than physical ones, it doesn't change that these ignorant mindsets keep racism alive and going. We can end this too. And here.
Kinda funny how everyone is crying about TerrenceM, because some internet trolls made fun about his skincolor and nobody cares about Ant who got bullied by the chat because of his weight.
That's because only Black Lives Matter, it the current fad for the average SJW.

While I don't agree with Ant getting bullied, if you're fat you can lose weight, but you can't change the colour of your skin.

How does that change what happened? I'm pretty sure Ant isn't less insulted, just because he can avoid getting bullied again.
Even if Ant would lose a lot of fat, he wouldn't avoid being bullied. I always find very funny that some people out there think that the reason for someone being bullied is having some physical flaws. LOL, please, how old are you?
But he got bullied because of his physical flaws believe it or not. Btw my age doesn't matter.
LOL, he wasn't bullied because of his physical flaws, some people bullied him using his physical flaws, which is very different. Like really, don't you know the difference? And yeah, your age probably matters here.

There's a reason they have the option to turn off chat. I never look at chat on big channels like Kripparian for example.

A glorious bundle of salt.

When I looked up "Ninjas" in Thesaurus.com, it said "Ninja's can't be found" Well played Ninjas, well played.
