With that little money and time spent, you're doing phenomenal. Watch the pros, hire a coach, re watch your matches. All good, viable strategies. But number one thing I have learned about the "dads" who play this game (generally a little older than the rest of us), is that you guys get set in your ways really quickly.
Always be willing to adapt, and change your playstyles, and you'll be even better than you are now! :)
For climbing the ladder really hard I can say from my own experience that all you need to do is get one deck that's good in the meta and play it non-stop. I used to switch decks every 2-3 games and even though I had like 1300 or so wins, I've never gotten past rank 10. Next month somebody told me to do exactly this and I was able to learn the deck (TGT tempo mage) that I piloted it to rank 4 with no problem. Right now I don't care about my rank, only the fun I have, and I switch deck a lot again, and since there is no particular deck I know inside out, I don't get past rank ~7 despite I have a LOT of experience and almost all the cards (3500 wins, been playing since BRM). So basically what I'm saying is this - I've tried both and variety seems more fun to me, but focusing on one deck is the way to success.
Uninstall it. Put on KOTOR. If you last it was meant to be. But for crying out loud, stop spending money! That is for the kids and single people. Us responsible adults are the teen fodder. Play for free and stop asking questions!
I think you're doing fine, especially if you're finding decks that you enjoy piloting. I spend a lot of time between ranks 10-15 just trying out decks and having fun. I've never tried to grind Legend, and I may never do it. And I've been playing since fall of 2014.

You are doing fine, was stuck around ~15 the first months I played. Making it to rank 5 is kind of ok, not sure how I could manage to find enough hours to ever reach legend. So if you find time with two. Kuddos to you.
If you like stat and record on your mobile, you can install Trackstone. That what I use. What is really nice is that there is a windget allowing you to record games without having to close the game. A benediction for iOS players.
dont worry to much about being stuck 20 in the first days of the month. At the beginning i started grinding only from 12th of each month to save time. Don't really like doing Yoyo
I'm also a married 33 yr old & father of two. I've dropped roughly $50 on the game and it took me about 2 yrs to achieve rank 4. I'd say you are definitely on track to beat me 😊
And despite my best efforts I can't convince the wife to try HS... She's a candy crusher
Just enjoy the game and don't worry about rank it took me 2 years to get legend (last month I managed to do it). Just try to have fun, don't pay for coaching because thats BS (watch YT or kindly ask someone to show you how to play certain deck). Also if you are on losing streak always take a short break. Don't always switch between decks find a deck with which you feel good and fun playing and grind with that deck. Sorry for any grammar mistakes I hope you get the point.
Edit: Try to find some time for your family too :) (if possible make your kids play hearthstone :P)
My whole fam plays and it's great to knock quests out with them or goof around in Tavern Brawl. My 7 year old has gotten to Rank 19 already, sometimes pilots my decks at Rank 15 and smacks some people. The Future!

Great news and good work. I'm slowly getting Wifey into cool things: deck builders, FPS, designer board games... it's getting fun! I started with Pokemon TCG with the kids and she slowly got interested. HS is the adult version, but "not as nerdy as Magic" as she has stated.

I love the Murlocs and finding new combos. Legend would be fun, streaming for cash would be a dream, playing with my family is priceless.

It's like buying a video game every once in a while. Doesn't hurt my pockets any, plus i thoroughly enjoy it. Don't want to ask what that acronym represents because I fear it'll derail this thread...
Update: Worked to Rank 16 and was almost at 15 and fell the fuck off. At 17 and one star currently - playing with a budget Murloc Paladin deck. Am 31-32 so far this month...
Those are good ranks for a beginner, keep on rocking. When i first started playing, i was thrilled that i managed to hit rank 12 without using heartpwn or any other website.
It depends on your current aims. If you are headed for legend, then you are doing terrible sitting on rank 12. But if you want to improve your game and reach 10, then you are doing fine. Keep grinding and you will make it. As for me, my max rank each season gets higher. So i suppose if you pay attention on your losing experience and track your decks WR, you can reach even rank 5 after a couple of seasons. Good luck!

I would love to reach Legend. Why do you think i'm doing terrible? What's the expected Rank level, for someone who's REALLY good, starting their fourth season??

1. Well, if you hit rank 5 - it is a half way to legend (no bonus stars and 5 stars each rank to pass), so not reaching 5 means you are not even on a half of your way. Thats why it is terrible.
2. It is hard to predict without watching you play and knowing your average WR what rank is expected. My current WR with shaman is 65% and i am on rank 4(3*). Am i good? Hard to say, because i still make misplays from time to time (and if you misplay once on a higher ranks, it is usually costs you a game). But if you are saying that you play really good, then your rank on forth season must be at least 10 i suppose.
Keep on practicing. Sooner than you think, you'll hit the point where you're not building budget decks anymore. Try reading some guides and studying up on common decks to get an extra edge
Exactly what deck are you using? Paladins are one of the more expensive classes this meta. Even I don't have all most of the cards for a perfect deck. If you want to TriHard just starting out, you might want to look into some cheaper options. If you're looking for an easy way to get better, try watching some streams/youtube. I recommend FireBat or Trump as they both do a good job of explaining their plays with the goal of educating the viewer
You're also doing well above average so far but it depends on your perspective. Most people can't even get to rank 10 in their entire career. But to people who regularly reach rank 5 - legend, rank 10 is easy mode where you can play meme decks
I LOVE playing this game. I've been unknowingly searching for something like this since I was a kid and lost in my first Magic tournament to some 40 year old with a ketchup-stained Hanes t-shirt. He busted my ass in less than five minutes with some bullshit Lighting/Fireball deck. Then I sat there and watched other people play until my dad picked me up hours later. Awkward.
Hearthstone is like the big blockbuster movie with all the expensive special effects that everyone is talking about in the world of DTCGs. As a card game, I think Hearthstone is slightly below averagely designed gameplay-wise, very expensive and "grindy". I mostly play it because everyone else is - I like the online communities, watching tournaments and streams. If you ever have second thoughts about Hearthstone but still love card games, know that there are other options
The start of season is really though cause of the skilled players dumped in lower ranks!

Murloc paladin is my favorite deck so it should be good.
Much respect for helping me out the other day. Helped a whole lot with better understanding trade value. Looking forward to my progress.
