I've decided for reasons yet unknown to return to Hearthstone. I've been playing a few years ago, almost from the release, but the last expansion I played was Whispers of the Old Gods. Damn, time flies - it was 5 years ago!
Anyway, a lot has changed and I could use some advice on how to get back to the game. For starters, is it just me or is getting gold much harder nowadays? I remember that from daily quests you could earn up to 200 gold/day (I think, I can be mistaken). Now there's experience instead and it does not look like it is equally profitable. Did the game become even more P2W than it was? I remember that back in the days if you had 10k dust you could play pretty much anything other than control Warrior. Now I look at the decks and 10k is...not that much to be honest. If we add to this the fact it's harder to get gold to buy packs, I'll end up stuck with face Hunter forever :/
Second question - is there any point in buying anything other than the last 3 expansions, assuming I'm only interested in playing Standard? From the Wiki: Games played in Standard format are restricted to cards from card sets released in the previous two calendar years, in addition to the Core set. So I understand that the expansions released in 2020 (Outland -> Darkmoon) will still be available till the end of the year? I find it a little odd because it would mean that now I can play 6 expansions, but at the end of they year it will be 9.
Finally, though probably it will be a while till I get to that point, are there any "universal" Legendaries worth to craft that can be used by multiple classes? I'm talking Dr. Boom level cards :) I don't know the usefulness of the new core Legendaries that were added in the past 5 years so could use some advice.
I recently returned to the game and I used the 4k dust I had left over to craft a T1 Aggro Druid Deck and grind to legend with it for the first time and there is actually way more resources available to players between the ranked rewards, addition of weekly quests, and new XP system can give you a lot of XP when you play a lot.
Hearthstone actually gives you a lot more gold and packs to F2P players than before but the downside is the total number of cards in standard is greater than before too so there is more to aquire
The standard year resets in April if I am not mistaken so yes stick to the latest 3 expansions for packs because the rest will be going out of standard pretty soon so just open Barrens, Stormwind, and Alterac Valley packs.
You might consider opening the previous years packs just for the free legendary in the first 5 packs it might be worth it.
The biggest buff to F2P players overall IMO is that you can't get card duplicates anymore until you have all the cards of that rarity so you won't get duplicate commons or rares until you have all the commons or rares for that expansion..
If I were you I would craft a cheap and competitive meta deck like aggro druid, and play casually for the next few months until the new standard year, with the goal of opening 30 packs of barrens, stormind, and alterac valley because that is about how many you open before you start getting duplicate commons when the packs have their full value. Then save the rest of the gold so you can open a bunch of packs when the new expansion is released then you will have a very decent collection ready for the new standard year
I was in the same boat a few weeks ago. Haven't played Heartsthone in 1.5 years and returned. First I played with the cards I already had and tried to gather dust to just craft the cards I needed for a specific deck.
I haven't bought any cards with real money but you don't really need to. As you don't need a completion of an expansion to have fun. Just try to complete all the quests, buy decks with in game money and spend the dust wisely.
> Is getting gold much harder nowadays? No, there is more gold, but it is positioned on the reward track the way you will get most of it in the end, so at the start it looks like less gold.
> Did the game become even more P2W than it was? No, and it never was. In terms of being F2P it became worse. There are more nerfs, so there are more decks used, so you need more dust now to keep up.
> Is there any point in buying anything other than the last 3 expansions, assuming I'm only interested in playing Standard? No.
> So I understand that the expansions released in 2020 (Outland -> Darkmoon) will still be available till the end of the year? No. After the first expansion of 2022 rotation will happen and 2020 expansions would be removed from Standard.
> Are there any "universal" Legendaries worth to craft that can be used by multiple classes? No, there are some good neutral legendaries, like Mr. Smite, but nothing at the Boom's level of number of decks interested in it.

English is not my native language, so, with a high probability, mistakes were made.
I'd recommend giving battlegrounds a try potentially, mainly so you can earn passive gold to build your gold up, the new reward track is good for farming gold and getting recent packs and legendaries so should save you a bit in the long run, good luck bud

Many thanks for the input. This had definitely helped me. I don't mind spending a little money so I bought a welcome bundle which gave me 70 packs. Based on that I got a budget version of Face Hunter and Quest Warrior. Though that's probably it when it come to money spending.
I climbed to D10 and hope to push to D5 for the Epic. I don't think I'll be grinding to Legend and I'll use Duels instead to complete daily quests. I'm having a lot of fun in casual Duels :) Then it's just gold gathering and waiting for the next expansions.
I'll check out battlegrounds though it seems quite complicated at first glance.
Fun fact: I have never been able to get 12 wins in Arena. Highest I had was I think 10. I tried a run for fun a few days ago. Not knowing any of the new cards, just picked them based on the Tier List from HearthArena. Went 12-2 :D
I see so many people on here saying its a mistake to return to hearthstone, I think it's weird because people act like it's like returning to smoking or something it's just a video game not a life decision lol

It's a video game made by a corrupt-as-a-motherfucker and abusive corporation with a parasitic monetization model, that has like NONE of the original creators and designers even working on it anymore (or at the company) due to the rampant abuse, corruption and parasitism.
And then you see posts where folks spend $70 on a whim supporting said abusive company and parasitism, and you can't help but feel that the games industry has turned to utter shit specifically because moronic, utter braindead gamers and aficionado centers who do NOTHING to change ANYTHING, like this beautiful site, made that so, so easy.
It may not be your life, but for the thousands of employees who are regularly abused, harassed, threatened, blackmailed, and extorted by Bobby Kotick and his fucking henchmen, who are all actively enabled by moronic, braindead gamers spending $70 on a whim on their shit, lives do matter. But, as long as someone gets their shitty digital cards, then who cares right?
Congratulations for being a lovely proof of concept for NFT's, or anything else bloodsuckers might come up to become richer, and you infinitely more dumb.

Bro, calm down and take a chill pill. This thread is about a returning player seeking real advice, so he can have a good time doing so. Why so much hate on this thread about other topics? If you dont have anything good to say, dont say anything at all. Common sense and decency go along way, and are sorely needed in these dystopian times. We enough hate out there, we dont need more here.

We’re talking about a person coming back to the game not the actual company stay on the subject. He wants actual input on what he should do to coming back to the game.
Imagine actively hating a game and trying to convince players to “run away” from it while being logged into and browsing through a website solely dedicated to that game.
We’re talking about a person coming back to the game not the actual company stay on the subject. He wants actual input on what he should do to coming back to the game.
Which is precisely what I gave him: Stop playing said game he came back to, and find something else.
Just because you don't want to hear it doesn't mean he doesn't need to.
Face hunter and aggro druid are both pretty cheap and effective for grinding diamond 5 for season rewards.
I would open at most 10 packs of each expansion since you last played to get the guaranteed legendary. You came back at a decent time since we just had some big nerfs, lunar new year free packs and a rotation in just a few months so there will be a whole year's worth of cards you wont need to worry about.
If you plan to play standard only, I would recommend creating a new account because of the apprentice ranks where you get 3 packs for every 5 ranks and a free deck upon completion. That will be a huge boost to your standard collection in a relatively short amount of time. Normally I would say play arena to build out your collection, but I would save gold for now after getting all the previous legendary cards. We have a miniset coming out soon for 2k gold then an expansion not long after that.
If you can afford it, I've found the rewards track pass to be a good investment over packs for the next expansion. If you play a lot it wont really make much of a difference besides getting you there quicker, but if you play casually it will significantly help your gold income.
You can climb pretty easily with just a couple of meta decks, and they have been pretty on top of balance changes unlike when you last played so you can constantly get dust refunds when the top decks get nerfed. I would check out hsreplay(dot)net for tier guides, winrates and dust costs, then make whatever substitutions you need based on your collection.
