Both of the character sets ruled an expansion trilogy.
Mercenaries were more serious, deeper with character lore, while the Leagues were more over the top, using the characters to create funny situations rather than character arcs.
I prefer the League of EVIL way more, and the Explorers were great too. The mercenaries feel too archetypical imo, I get that they're WoW PC parodies, but they're still boring for the most part.

This is not even a contest. If we include the league of explorers AND the league of EVIL, there are just too many excellent characters and moments.
I like some of the mercenaries, but I think they didn't have as many memorable moments to say they were better.
