Ever since we released the original Runescape game back in the day under the terminology: Runescape Classic, it seems like everyone is getting on the bandwagon of releasing original versions of games with the "Classic" moniker tagged on (e.g. WoW Classic, etc). Which is a good thing - it's awesome to grab a little nostalgia and remember how games used to be when they first started (like getting to play the original consoles again, etc).
So it got me thinking about Hearthstone. Now we have moved on through a good few years worth of expansions and rotations, I figured it would be rather cool to have Hearthstone Classic mode, giving the option to play using only cards from the original set (and perhaps the first expansion or so, depending on variety etc).
I vaguely recall they did a Tavern Brawl a couple years back which let us play using a decks from the first tournament/s that were really popular, which was great fun.
It would also give newer players a good place to build and try out their decks when getting all the classic cards together, so they don't feel overwhelmed by all the newest expansions etc. They would be on a level playing field with other players, having a much smaller set of cards to contend with.
I reckon a classic mode would be a great addition to the game. Maybe even a classic ladder of it's own perhaps? And the balancing is already there as well.
I would much rather like an "Unstable" format. Having a handful of expansions rotate in and out every month to help give the game a feel of freshness. Like in January you get Naxx, Ungoro and Old Gods, meanwhile in February you'd get Boomsday, GvG and Meanstreets.
Something like that I think would help this game out in the long run a whole lot more than just a classic ladder (plus it would mean that cards still hold some value after they rotate to wild at the end of their standard life cycle).... though a Classic ladder would still be a welcome addition (for new players like you said).
That would be nice! Maybe they could mix it up like 1 month “just classic” another month with the “just 3 sets”, so the format keeps on changing and never gets stale.. we already have standard for that.

Ah, yes, a regular changing format would be good too. It keeps it fresh, so you dont just get the same decks forever.
It would get boring AF, fast. If new players want to get a sense of this, they can play vs Inkeeper.
I'm not sure that the innkeeper would provide the same challenge / enjoyment in fairness? You might get a vague idea of the core decks, but that's probably all. I realise it got pretty tedious near the end, but if I recall correctly, Hearthstone Vanilla lasted a good year, maybe 18 months before the first expansion hit. And it was going strong by that point. (even with the fatigue)
That all said, the same could be suggested for say, WoW Classic - some might find it utterly boring and I reckon some will probably be shocked at how much of a grind the original game actually was - but some would really enjoy it still, and appreciate the return to it's original state.
Herthstone needs more formats to play so that users are more happy. However, Blizzard wants players to pay and play Standard, rather to provide more enjoyment with the limited collections.

We already see people complain of a stale meta a month after release. A mode with only Classic cards would maybe see a month of play, and then declining numbers until there are few if any players left.

But the game was very new at that point and ppl didnt get a taste of the cards that r in the game today. Goin back to it, it wouldnt be the same environment as back then, even if the card pool was the same.
Personally I wouldn't want this as a brawl or rotated mode, I'd want Hearthstone Classic altogether even if as a standalone game. I had the most fun in this game from beta through release and I'd prefer that over what we have now. If there can be a WoW Classic, there can be a Hearthstone Classic!

Still, they could do it as a tavern brawl or some kind of event. Just for fun.

Can you say "stale meta"

If you are in your first year of playing please read this post.
Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.

Not if there is a new mode that switches sets every month, starting off with HS classic.
