The new cards added in The Witchwood have made Elemental Mage and Shamans finally strong decks. I've been running an Odd Elemental Mage ever since day one of the expansion and I'm having great success with it. With these new cards in the Witchwood, Elementals now finally have a time to shine. But what cards would that be?
Bonfire Elemental fixes a problem Elemental Mages had: Tempo. You could either draw cards, or play an Elemental. Well this card does both. You get a card, a 5/5, and keep the Elemental chain going so you can get more Elemental synergy.
So Bonfire fixes the tempo card draw problem Elemental Mages had, so what about Elemental Shamans? Sandbinder fixes that. Direct draws are so good, and Sandbinder can pull out your big or small Elementals, which could lead to a chain.
But then there's all the non-Elemental cards that were added recently that also help, such as Black Cat for Odd Elemental Mages. Seems the tribe has finally been realized. Now we just need some more Elementals with crazy effects.
Mage could already play Servant of Kalimos which was more or less 4/5 draw a card with condition and since it was elemental mage it wasn't like the discover was bad. I'm not sure how much of an improvement bonfire is in that regard.
Elemental Shaman is still doing terrible despite sandbinder so I don't think it helps with the fundamental problem of Kalimos not being good enough endgame for elemental Shaman.

Agreed on Kalimos. Every single time I play the card, my reaction is, "is that it?". A bunch of 1/1s? Great, it's Onyxia for one less mana. Six face damage? The two defensive options are better effects, but they're not finishers. I guess you can deal 12 to face with a Murmuring Elemental, but the archetype isn't exactly pumping out damage to face before that, and control decks have long since stabilized at that point.
It's just a really bad card, imo. Should have been a weaker body with stronger effects.
Elemental decks are just too slow right now. Yeah Elemental mage can really wreck a value game, especially with Frost Lich. The problem is you get rekt by Dude Paladin and Cubelock...Minion Spiteful mage even does better than elemental mage.
Looking back, it's hard to believe that already 1 year passed since the elementals were introduced... I'm still waiting for Kalimos to shine, his servant and him were my favourite cards from un'goro... They are viable right now, but not really good...
I've played a lot of elemental mage in the past, but haven't gotten the new toys this expansion yet. My guess is that Bonfire Elemental helps a lot, that extra point of attack over Servant of Kalimos really does matter. Kalimos is often just unable to trade with opposing 5 drops. I have my doubts about sandbinder in the deck, its good for setting up combos, but its really just a 2/4 draw a card in this deck. I imagine book of specters is pretty great in this deck though, you can keep some high end spells and still draw 2 cards on average.
I have been playing around with a couple Elemental Mage decks, and having good luck with them, but they are so dependent on getting Jaina out on curve, or really close to it. They have just enough to keep you in the game until about T10, but with no Jaina, they fall apart to other decks late game. With her, it's usually game over though.

Lots of people are claiming great success with lots of different decks these days!
Makes me wonder who they are all beating ...

I love my elemental Hagatha deck. I find you can achieve something like good tempo with Murmuring Elemental+Servant of Kalimos
The power is mine!
