Put it this way. If they made a card called "The motherf**king Lich King" (without stars), most americans wouldn't care and would think it's funny. Some would get upset though because it's a game to be played by children, and we would all agree it's a bad idea because our culture doesn't support swearing around certain people. Perhaps in another country, swearing around children is not a big deal but you have to make the game for your audience. I don't see this as censorship so much as knowing your audience and not wanting to offend them for the sake of mass market appeal.
Yeah it's pretty terrible that such a massive company would, rather than just saying "screw you we're a massive entity and we will do as we please!" That they actually respecting a different culture than their own,
Awful Blizzard, shameful in fact, for as we all know the only culture to respect is the one that you abide in, every other culture is "stupid as hell"
OP I get that you maybe don't like censorship, but you are wrong to question another culture.
Dude what do you as European or American (or wherever you come from) have to do with Chinese culture? Do you live in China? Do their rules and culture affect you? Just stay away from others peoples/countries business.
Imo censoring skeletons is not even weird. Why would you want to show symbol of death anyway?
Hahahaha, symbol of death? What a joke... Next one!!!
Well with that sentence of yours I clearly concluded you are slightly mentally disabled or just a child that wants everything to be at his wish
perhaps people should worry more about their own totalitarian governments instead of acting outraged over pseudo censorship in a distant land.
What the hell are you talking about? I live in Argentina, there is no totalitarian government here. WTF?
Seems like Hes trying to act smart in reference to the United States, which really isn't totalitarian. I mean, we have some distasteful leadership but....

Hahahaha, you are funny my friend, thanks for the laughs! :)

Yes, and it The MF Litch King is a major piece of a new expansion the name will limit how it can be marketed, where they can advertise it, etc. If the Succubus card were nude it would be, perhaps, thematically appropriate but problematic for the target audience (even here in New York where topless women ARE allowed on the street, it's a bit of a taboo). This is REALLY no big deal.
It is really funny how you guys defend other people cultures, when probably those who you defend don't even give a f..k about your existence. What about growing up and don't giving a f..k about the rest of the world? Life would be better for you guys. :)

Some of us disagree with you. That isn't a crime.
You're the one who seems pretty angry about this. Why does a change to the artwork for some foreigh markets matter to you?

Most of the replies here have nothing to do with defending a culture.
The answer to your original question is that Blizzard's decision has nothing to do with the ethics of censorship. They choose to comply with the artistic standards imposed by the Chinese government as a way to expedite business. Doesn't mean they care one way or the other; they just want to get shit done.
If this bothers you, take it up with China, not Blizzard. There are plenty of things about China's government that should bother you, and this is probably one of the least important.

For that matter, there are plenty of things about the damn government right the fuck here that should offend us.
The picture a video game company uses is amongst the very least of our concerns.

Well, that was explained by Sylicas in the first page of this thread. I don't see any reason why some people have to repeat constantly the same thing when I admitted he was right, also in the first page.
I'm a Chinese and I'll share my opinion on this. Personally I consider such censorship to be quite ridiculous, while I don't really care about it being a helmet or a skull. I believe that most people in China feels just the same way as you guys do when they see skeletons or ghosts or whatever, at least in our younger generation. Nonetheless, the censorship can be indeed VERY ridiculous at times, as I once watched a video on Youtube about censorship on WOW in China where they turn flesh and bones into loaves of bread...

If you can bring up weirdly ranty, tangential, xenophobic strawman arguments, I figure anything is fair game.

Also, if the OP admitted that he was wrong in the first page, the discussion should be over. It could be, "yes, at first glance this felt like government censorship, but I can see it as a business and artistic choice to make minor cosmetic adjustments for the purpose of fitting into disparate markets."
By doubling-down and accusing any who disagree with "defending a culture" or some kind of censorship is weird and counterproductive.

Whatch out!!! Xenophobic arguments!!! Dude, please, I haven't really made any xenophobic argument, I have nothing against the common chinese citizen (I have a friend that is half chinese for god sake, the one who lives in China now), it is just that I really dislike censorship and I wanted to share this thing with the people of Hearthpwn. The fact I think part of their culture is totally wrong (this ridiculous thing about censorship, obviously) doesn't mean I have really something against them. Also, as I said, probably many chinese people (like the user Anvylin) think the same as I do, so yeah...

Xenophobia isn't the same as racism. It's contempt for other cultures, such as when you say, "What about growing up and don't giving a f..k about the rest of the world?"
