Let's take a moment to commemorate the average player. We've all laughed at the newbies complaining about the stagnant meta or the 'overpowered' priests. We've all used the 99% win-rate decks of the streamers fuelled by sweet sweet Youtube and Twitch money. However, we never seem to acknowledge the medium-core Hearthstoners. The ones who aspire to be great only to realise that they don't have Rag. The ones who try their very best to get past ranks 15-5 only to be beaten and battered by scum-bag hunters and zoolocks. The ones who spends hours of life away from loved ones at gruelling night shifts in order to scrape up any money they can for packs that yet to hold one decent legendary. This thread is dedicated to them, so they may discuss their whims and woes to their hearts' content.
I am one of these people. I as a fourteen year old, has spent one hundred and fifty of my parents' hard-earned Aussie dollars on less than average packs (sorry mum and dad :/). I try to make fun and unique decks only to fall flat when I realise it'll never work without this card or that card. I follow Trump's arena guides to a tee but will never get past seven wins. So hear me average players! Let us celebrate our average...ness and share our stories of love and loss!

That's me, that's me! I play since the final release (not daily), have no spent real money, own two Legendaries (Leeroy and Tinkmaster), have never gotten past Rank 13 and my best Arena result was 9 wins. It is really tough to see progress if you don't have the cards to built the deck you want and if you can only play like 4 ranked games with a ~53% winrate. I have to admit that I am one of those Zoolock players that simply can't afford other decks and I always feel guilty whenever someone complains about Zoolock and I always feel ashamed whenever someone says how easy this deck is and I have lost 3 time in a row. Just like after I read your comment on Zoolocks. :D Actually, I would love to play some midrange/control deck because that fits my personal playstyle way better but without certain cards it's pointless. I should focus on Arena but I don't have that much gold to afford more than one run a day. Sob... at least I managed to get back again to 15 from 18 yesterday.
The arena guides are good, but only to give you an idea of what cards are better for each class. That doesn't mean picking the card that is highest on the list for every round of the draft will give you an optimal deck. Sometimes a card that is lower on the list will fill a gap or create a synergy in your deck. For the first fifteen rounds take the best card you can, but keep in mind that you have to make your deck function as an archetype before the end. Then for the remaining fifteen rounds try to get the best cards possible to balance the deck.
I am one of these players, although I do have a solid deck that is metas old yet still wins most of it's games (I can easily go on a ten win streak) and the only legendary it has is Leeroy. I haven't spent any money on the game, though I've easily opened 100 packs, which I've spent hours on end making sure I could open at least a pack a night. To only open up three legendaries total (Two of which were Deathwings which crushed me). I keep track of the cards I have, yet I still don't have many decent cards, but I am close to finishing off all of the shaman cards....which I suck at playing shaman. Yet the few friends I have who play Hearthstone open up a decent legendary every other 10 packs, and I had to enchant a decent legendary. I work hard to get what I have, yet most of the time I get lack luster packs, seeing the same rares over and over, when I need about 90 of them. It's a great game, but I don't have money to buy packs, and I wouldn't dare do that considering the type of packs I get anyways. Cheers, to us mate.

I've mostly given up on gaining ranks. I just get to 20 for the card back and do the odd arena run when I can be bothered. Also, zoolocks and the like aren't that bad, it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth when I die to some dumb Leeroy combo while I'm at 20 health and have board control. *Sigh* such is life I suppose.

Well, I will like you guys to know (and maybe I should be making a "below average" player thread lol, but I have played for months and months. I am college educated and beyond, I have a great RL, great job, great little family, and have not even broke the big "30" mark in age and I own every single last card in this game atm, yes, every legendary from every class to every neutral. I find a lot of pleasure in collecting cards (once I realized I was not a legendary player), I complain when frustrated, and I used to be the habitual "netdecker".
Let me go on record to let you guys know, while having every card in the game is nice, all of those orange cards, purple ones, my extensive collection of rare and uncommons (i have a zoo and handlock deck that is made of pure golden cards). The legendary card is one huge smoke screen because of the little orange gem. there are, I would say, 10 (definitely more to the above average player) legendary cards that really do make game changing differences. Leeroy, rag, and alex are, to me, the top neutral legendary cards and Grommash is, once again imo, the strongest class legendary (its synergy its unreal).
I play within the ranks of 13-5 mostly and I have fun with that. I am currently only rank 17 (after getting to 11 and tanking to 20 in 5 days due to the difficult time I was having adjusting to the mage/hunter orgy on the laddy now.. at least at those ranks at those times). I play the game for fun, I play at high ranks yes, but I still think I am below average because unlike you guys, I have the resources to own/craft any card I want, yet I have never been even close enough to sniff legend.
Granted my job is time consuming, I do play wow also in a hardmode progression raiding guild which both take up a lot of time of mine, which is ok and I am happy about. Enjoy life, enjoy hearthstone, keep busting open those packs and you'll get those cards I promise and maybe one day you and I will meet on the ladder and your 1-2 "great" legendary cards in your build along with your average skill, will give you a guarantee star against my "decorated" deck with a below average player behind it ^_^. Be patient, have fun, once again, enjoy life (most importantly), your fun in hearthstone seems to be in its infancy and it will grow, save this post and mark my words, I promise
~Cheers
p.s. tl:dr, I get it, but I also understand where yous guys are coming from. (try dating an extremely, smoking hot woman that HAS hit legendary while you can't...lulz)
I too am your average Joe. I've spent more real money on gold than I have ever earned. I toil just enough for card backs and daily quests. I net deck with the best of them, then lose to some random janky deck in casual. And when I'm not playing, I am watching the HS Twitch channel. I am the player Blizzard and twitch loves to have.
Rejoice Average Joes!! Rejoice!! We keep Blizzard in business. Not the elite players, and not the F2Per's. It's us. Rejoice!
This is, like, totally my thread. Greetings, friends! I am Pacmanexus, a player on an epic quest: To reach Legend playing only Priest. While being F2P and owning no legendaries except Grommash and a Cairne I pulled last night after an 0-3 Arena run! And having never been above rank 7, and currently at 15! Oh, and did I mention that my best Arena run was 7-3? So yeah, it's a looooooong road ahead, but I totally got this. Probably.
At least I'm better than my friend who actually spent money to build Miracle and Handlock, and can't get past rank 19 this season =D

Money Spending Average Players > F2P Average Players and Elite Players
Without the MSAP's, Blizzards "free" business model collapses, and HS is dies a slow death (Or is riddled with in game advertising).
My people! My story is not unlike many of yours. I almost always play at least a couple of games a day. I don't have the time to try to grind for Legend rank or do 1+ Arena runs every day. When I actually do get around to an Arena run, it takes me several days to finish (unless I go 0-3, which has happened more than once). Best arena run so far was 5-3 and I was thrilled!
I *sort of* spent money on the game...had a gift card that I burned on some packs. So I supported the cause without hurting my wallet. Ended up opening up Leeroy with that bunch of packs. Only other Legendaries I have are The Beast, Al'Akir (which got me to give Shaman a try, and I like it), and Cenarius (I never, ever play Druid. D'oh!)
I'll admit that I also play a zoo deck pretty frequently. Why? Because it's fun and quick and that's why I play. I don't have a lot of time to spend playing and I want to enjoy the time I do spend. Plain and simple. Thinking of trying to make a face hunter deck for the same reasons.
I play ranked to get the card backs. Best rank was last season (15). Hope you see some of you, my fellow average players, out there next time I play!
What I find frustrating is I'm pretty sure my win rate is around 35%. I do enough to finish quests everyday. If those quests are warlock or priest I can get up to rank 15 and get lots of bonus stars (I have good priest cards). Otherwise I'm stuck at rank 17.
What I am curious about is: How in the heck, at rank 17 am I facing a turtle warrior, who plays 4 (good) legendaries, 4 epics, and a bunch of decent blue cards in a single game? Or why am I facing miracle at that low ranks? My only though is that some players purposely just concede a bunch of games and smash face at lower ranks.
As for my meta play style:
1. I've never crafted a single card.
2. I've never spent real money.
3. I Disenchant every card that gets modified for maximum dust.
The ones who aspire to be great only to realise that they don't have Rag. The ones who try their very best to get past ranks 15-5 only to be beaten and battered by scum-bag hunters and zoolocks. (snip) yet to hold one decent legendary. This thread is dedicated to them, so they may discuss their whims and woes to their hearts' content.
That is me pretty much. I try to do as well as I can with my single Deathwing (and old murk-eye that is good for nothing as I don't use my murlocs anymore), which I never use anyway. I still try to do my best (rank 11 or something), but always get stuck with the classes that "need certain cards for certain decks" that I just don't have (pally, freeze mage, any mage, etc.). I have to use all these rares and the couple epics (most fortunate pack was Faceless, Faceless Manipulator > Deathwing) to get by with budget versions of high end decks...
Hey everyone, I'm happy to see how many have rallied to this thread. To be frank, I thought people would just say, "Ha newb," and move on. It's good to know that there are others out there, who face and understand our troubles.
If u guys want to improve just watch streams on twitch, u can learn so much from those guys. Having no legendaries doesn't mean u cant win dont forget that!
I've considered pushing for better results - but I'd rather use my free time for reading and socializing than grind-grind-grind for legendary, so while I'm probably a better player than my rank indicates, I'm still definitely in the average camp.
What I find frustrating is I'm pretty sure my win rate is around 35%. I do enough to finish quests everyday. If those quests are warlock or priest I can get up to rank 15 and get lots of bonus stars (I have good priest cards). Otherwise I'm stuck at rank 17.
Well, if your win rate was really about 35%, you'd be sitting almost permanently at rank 20. Occasionally you'd get up to 19 but drop down again quickly. So I suspect you're a little better than you're giving yourself credit for. :-)
Sad fact is.. the standard of play in this game is actually pretty high! I've been playing for months, I feel that I have a pretty good knowledge of the game and a pretty good head for the sort of memory and decision-making needed.. but I don't play that much, just a few games each day really. I don't have an incredible collection.. couple of legendaries, a few good epics for each class and a few good neutral ones. I've never gotten above rank 14. I usually bounce around 18-16 just like you. And the people I play there are mostly pretty good. Good decks, good players, few mistakes made.
