Hi guys, after I saw that the thread about gender representation in Hearthstone was locked, I really started to wonder why some people take this game so seriously. What is up with some of you?, please... This is just a game, it's also very weird when some of you come here to cry despertatly when some guy you will probably never met in your life BMed you with some emotes during a random match.
Isn't this game mostly about fun?. Why everything has to be taken so seriously and like a terrible problem?. I'm pretty sure that when Ben Brode and Team 5 were designing this game, they were mostly thinking about making it a fun one, and not a headache for it's players. Please, just think about it, why did you start playing this game?. "For fun" is probably the answer, but why it has to be different now?.
So, can some of you explain me and the rest of the community why is this card game more important than life itself for you?.
To be fair, I don't think much of the seriousness in the thread you mentioned was really about Hearthstone specifically. It was more about the world in general.
In a very compact way: when someone ruined your fun it is not fun anymore. If it makes you angry it is normal.
If a guy you don't know that emotes you sometimes during a random match in an online game is enough to ruin your fun, then it seems you weren't having too much fun to being with... Why would you play a video game that is not fun for you?.
To be fair, I don't think much of the seriousness in the thread you mentioned was really about Hearthstone specifically. It was more about the world in general.
Well, the topic was about gender representation in Hearthstone, so I'm just focusing on that part.
That topic was pure BS,most people don't really care, but then some people (whose disabilities are not dire enough that they need prescribed medication) start pouring "feelings" on paper, then the rational people try reasoning with real facts and data, voila! a total fiasco. There is no arguing with people that think emotions(misguided emotions) are facts.
As a poster already said the (nonexistent)problem is general not HS related but those people try to shove it everywhere they can,bad advertising is still advertising,as long as people see them their goal is made, this is what they are after.
If you want i can show you in private some YT videos regarding the SJW maddness.
And i hope my comment won't start another forum war..
Some people take this game serious because I'd say...because of the competitive side? Sure RNG is fun but sometimes it can be a little too much. For the BM part, it's totally up to the person who receives it. I don't take BM's seriously, mostly just for the fun of it. You can squelch your opponent or concede if you know you have no chance of winning and get on to another match that could be way more fun than what you're playing now. Just know there's always gonna be people who get triggered easily because of that. In all honesty, this game should be about fun, if it's not then there is something going wrong.
All games are created to have fun, but still, if you're adding a competitive side to it, you'll always find these kind of players, and more with so much RNG involved.

The best bit about that paragraph is that it's honestly not clear which side of the flamewar you are referring to with each of those groups of people. :-)
I think the main reasons why people take it too serious is that HS is addicting and that it is competitive. The second one is not based on HS itself, some people just take any kind of competition serious. However, i don't think that people take it as serious as you claim and it is not HS related. I admit that i take HS a bit too serious as i should do it, but it is by far not as important than life. But that doesn't mean that i shouldn't complain about BM. For me BM is arrogant and respectless and i can't stand it if someone is so arrogant and respectless ESPECIALLY since HS is only a game. It is not a big achievement to win a game in HS and justifies in no way arrogant or respectless behaviour.
Maybe it is not good that it effects me so much, maybe it is a personal issue i have. However, you should take a look at the causal chain. All this complaining and discussion wouldn't have started if people wouldn't BM. So why just don't they stop it? If they do it to have a psycological advantage in the game and they accept that they behave bad, then they take HS way too serious. If they do it, because they have fun to annoy people, then they might have some mental issues as well. If they do it, because they think it is fun, but their intention is actually not bad then they would stop if they would know that the other person is annoyed.
Considering this, it doesn't make any sense to complain about persons who complain about BM, to defend or justify BM. The role of victim and culprit is simple interchanged. And it is a general problem on the internet. People say that internet is bad and one should accept that. It does make sense to see it realistic, however that doesn't mean that you need to accept it or like it, because it is still something bad. If people can accept that they should at least consider that others might struggle with that or don't want to. If people do not understand that BM annoys other players and can't accept this, then they are ignorant and narrow minded.
About discussions here on the forum. I spend a lot of time here, too much actually, and read many threads, but actually most topics are not interesting for me. Topics of the threads are repeating very often and often i simple don't care about most of them. The reason why i still often write here, is not that i take HS too important or the special topic, but the way people discuss here. It actually happened twice that i replied to a thread where the topic wasn't so interesting and i wouldn't have wrote anything to the matter, but in the end i replied because i didn't like the way the OP replied to some guys. I just can't stand it when people attack other people and at the same time showing big mistakes in their argumentation. I also don't like it when people just claim something and might mislead other people. Then i feel i need to add my points to give a second point of view. And when they are confronted with it they are often too stubborn to reflect their argumentation and admit mistakes. And even though you tell them in a normal way, they attack you. The worst for me is when people allege that someone is stupid and coming with some poor argument. That this annoys me so much might again just a personal issue i have, but the problem is not that i take HS too serious, but i take logical, rational thinking and a mature discussion very serious. I have the same issue if i follow other discussion. Be it a political talk on the TV, a stupid talk show or any kind of discussion thread on the internet.
So in conclusion, it is not really HS that i take so serious, but all this stupidity, ignorance, arrogance, respectless behaviour and poor logic. I spend a LOT of time to write this post, since i tried to write my arguments in a good, structured order. I know i am stupid to do so, but if i read something and i find logical mistakes or i don't agree, i feel like i have to add my points. Especially since it is public and everyone can read it, so a second point of view or the right argumentation should be provided. I can't speak for others that take HS too serious from your point of you, but i think many have similar reasons as i have. And again, in this whole discussion the causal chain is important and should be considered.
To be fair, I don't think much of the seriousness in the thread you mentioned was really about Hearthstone specifically. It was more about the world in general.
Exactly! Which is the main reason why that thread was locked. It started off as a more or less 'okay' thread and then it went downhill when people started talking about gender equality around the world. We try to keep all controversial topics that are not about hearthstone, nor impact hearthstone in any meaningful nor constructive way, out of Hearthpwn.

I think it's a little misleading to say that discussing certain things about HS automatically means you care about the game more than real life. I was quite active in that thread, being polite and articulate, but that hardly takes up my day; it's just something to do on breaks.
If anything, people are debating the implications of Standard more than gender in HS, and I wouldn't say anyone is neglecting their real lives to do that.
That said, I originally thought this topic was going to be about people being addicted to the game and playing it over going to work or school, or spending time with friends.
@OP What a god awful way of starting a discussion by saying "why is it more important than life".
Are you hoping for some constructive discsussion when you open a thread with that title or do you just want to be flamed?
Dafuq. People being taking the game seriously might be one problem, the other one are people like you that just add more salt to injury by creating threads like this that leads to jack shit.

I appreciate your thought out post. I would agree with a lot of it.
I would also add, though, the part of why people come to discuss, or complain, about BMing is because there is an entitlement mentality in our culture that is growing. IN this sense, I would argue that people feel entitled to not have to exert effort to affront something that displeases them, or that hinders their perception of what they want or think they should have or deserve. In other words, some might think that they shouldn't have to encounter BMing because it's rude, and by being rude, not good, and we all should stop what is not good.
This fails to realize that an attempt to stop what is not good should not come alone, but it should be accompanied by direct efforts to defend against whats is not good. A person who wants to change something in the world that affects them in a bad way will look to whatever they can to try to change it overall, or around them, but if they forget to defend against that thing on a specific, individual basis, they are going to suffer more of what they suffer because of said bad thing.
For example, home invasions that a result in torture and rape and murder of the family are bad. Those that see it, or even worse, those that suffer from it, will want to attempt to get society to stop it, and change it because it is bad. Unfortunately, this is not possible in perfection. We may reduce these types of things, by whatever means (criminal system, i.e. punishments, deterrents, etc...) but really, this will not stop all cases from occurring. What must be done ALONGSIDE such efforts are specific acts of defense to prevent it on the individual level. Lock your doors, get better doors, get a home security system, purchase a bat, paper spray, a handgun, shotgun, or 16" semi-auto.
Yes, one shouldn't have to, because it's an act that is a pre-acted reaction to the reality of the potential, and nothing bad should ever happen, but it does. So one MUST. If one is to accept personal responsibility, one must defend. I'm not saying one has to do all the things I suggested in the prior paragraph as a defense, but it is irresponsibility, ignorance, and outright disrespect to oneself not to at least being to take some measures to defend against that which is bad (and shouldn't happen but will/might).
BMing is bad. It shouldn't happen, because it's rude. It's unfortunate, and many will continue to complain and want the system (game) changed in the same way there are those in society that want the system (gun control laws and drug laws and more laws against bad things) but the system changes cannot perfectly prevent against BMing in the same way system changes can't prevent against violent and horrible events. Defending becomes a necessity.
How should one, if they feel that they are detrimental or will be detrimented by BMing defend against BMing? Squelch every game. Small effort. great result.
I would like to see a permanent squelch button, but that would only be a convenience. It would still just be implementing a defense that is already available, but needs to be done at the beginning of each match. I will give my opponent no more power over me than what is the minimum, therefore I squelch every game. Simple as that. Am I missing the point of the game? No. The point of the game is to conquer the opponent with your cards, conquer their deck, reduce their health to 0. Am I to admit that there is emotional elements to the game? Yes. Nobody can say they don't have an emotional response, ever-so-slight to Tirion being entombed. I will reduce the amount of negative emotional response, because I can admit that emotional responses do have a slight impact on the cognition of thought and strategy, and if I want to maximize my cognition, I will defend against anything that might result in an emotional response.
Now, to the BMing. Does it have the ability to cause can emotional response in the other person? Yes. Can you use this to your advantage? yes. You can frustrate your opponent into making mistakes or conceding. Saying sorry when you entomb Tirion can elicit an inadvertable emotional response in the other player, to different magnitudes based on the other player and their circumstances, chosen and unchosen. It can be used then as part of the battle. The game allows it, and thus, as the game allows things to move towards wins, people will use it. Most don't use it, I think, as a part of their overall strategy, but rather as gratification and some other reasons, but some do use it as a weapon.
Will you let them have power over you, intentional or not? I wouldn't. I don't. (the you i speak of is the proverbial all, not the writer of the quoted post).
I think the main reasons why people take it too serious is that HS is addicting and that it is competitive. too long so I only read most of the first paragraph. but I agree with you on it. It does seem like arrogance when others do it, but I know the truth is many of them aren't even paying too much attention to the match. they behave the way they do since it's designed to piss you off. That's why i play the way I do sometimes, and why I get most of my enjoyment out of the game from some of the brawls. sometimes the possibilities allow so much control over the match that it results in having a sense of control over the other players. the fact they have no chance to win sometimes, playing in a way that lets them think they can win for a long time in, and roping the match form mulligan while highlighting moves I want them to make like minions i want them to attack with and which I'd like them to remove. I know my cursor highlights it on their screens. I also move over their portrait once in a while since I know some people hate that. it feels great knowing some of them are VERY pissed off by the time I put the whammy on them and animations block concede (I imagine some can't bring themselves to do it by then anyways) so that they're forced to wait it out or go options quit then restart or else sit through the animations after I just wasted ten minutes or more of their time. either way I control their behavior there by limiting their choices after they just realized they wasted their time. it's a great feeling
This is Blizzard's fault. every other game gives you some progress, no matter how small, on a loss. gold is how you progress in hearthstone, it's like life. you need money to make money but you need to make money to have the money to make the money. this frustrates people. and for osme, like myself, it makes it such a monotonous grind that we can't even find any sort of enjoyment in the game any other way. I wouldn't play if I weren't given the ability to do this to people sometimes. in fact, for the longest time now, I have only played tavern brawls because of this and only the brawls I can work with well enough and I'll concede the matches where I know I won't have control. I don't touch randomonium for this reason, it's one of my most hated brawls ever. absolutely no fun for me, though I know it certainly is for some people. but I'm thinking about a sense of gains, and it's either gold or satisfaction in controlling a person's experience and making them miserable for a moment. I'd take apermanent gold ban if I didn't have to wait every other week to figure my way around the brawls in order to have that pleasure. since I would certainly feel incentive to spend money more often than just expansion pack preorders.
