It's a mage Assassinate, but it's vulnerable to divine shield and minions with over 8 health. Mage already has a way to deal with giants in the form of Polymorph or BGH. But hey, someone will run it I'm sure. Actually, no. No one will run it.
I play grinder mage a lot and this card seems like a solid removal option for it. The deck only runs one fireball anyway, and the extra two damage is really meaningful against big guys when you don't draw your polymorphs or your BGH on time. Slow, control mages will probably see play in TGT, and this card is just another removal tool for the control mirror match. Sure, it doesn't work in tempo mage, but does that really need a buff? I'll definitely try this out in my majordomo mage.
another tool for control mage as well as a solid pick for arena. i see this getting used in beefy minions metas where bgh can't hit but this can. for instance, what if 6/8 becomes the norm for legendaries? you probably would rather have 1 card to be able to deal with it then always having to use 2 or at worst 3 on them.
Polymorph costs 1 less, kills anything and skips the deathrattle, but you have to ping the sheep. Flame Lance might see some play if the meta is right, but even in the best circumstance, the advantage is minor at best.
IMO, this is about keeping mage removal at the same percentage of cards in Arena.
Must be mage decks out there that somehow didn't have enough removal already.
There are, actually. Consider a grinder mage vs. a control warrior. You want to remove Alexstrasza, Dr. Boom, Ragnaros, and Grom at the bare minimum. You only have 3 ways of destroying these guys, normally. Two polymorphs and a BGH. Fireball alone doesn't cut it. But, if you run Flame Lance, you have the removal you need to eliminate the control warrior's main threats, allowing you to draw out the game and win with the power of attrition, where grinder mage excels.
Some mages do need more removal, as strange as that may sound.
You can hit HERo with it... what is weird on this?
You can't, actually. It's only minion damage. If it could hit face it would be two damage less than Pyroblast for 5 less mana. That's pretty OP, and Mage has enough burn for the decks that run it.
good for clearing big minions if you dont have bgh or out of bgh range like Foe Reaper 4000,Kel'Thuzad or Chromaggus, or a really buffed minion, it seems that this expansion is more new player friendly
Hmm; so it's 2 more damage than a Fireball but has targeting restrictions.
But it does deal with almost any minion for 5 mana. But... Polymorph is a thing for big removal.
Seems weird. Don't get me wrong; it's not bad. 8 damage for 5 mana is good. Compare it to the burst version of Starfall Just... if this was in any class except Mage it would be great.
That said; maybe you want to not run Fireball; and would rather run this because you're heavy on 4 drops? I dunno. I can see that being a thing; especially in a mage which relies on Archmage Antonidas or a more board-oriented control mage which us using things like Piloted Shredder and Echo of Medeivh in their 4 slots already, so would rather have harder removal at 5 mana so as not to clog their 4 slot anymore.
And this card isn't garbage just because you compare it to Fireball. Fireball is an OP card.
Flame Spear over Fireball is ultimately a tempo-based choice, and might swing based on how much the meta is based around bulky minions.
Fireball + Hero Power is enough for Boom. Leaving you 2 polymorph and BGH for the other 3. Do you really want another tech card for that particular matchup?
You wouldn't. You'd run both. This card probably will see lots of use in very slow mages that run double poly but need comfortable answers to big things. It's much better than fireball.
I don't think meta will ever slow down to the point that you want to run both Polymorph and Flame Lance.
If Handlock becomes prevalent in the meta this will be put into mage decks
5 mana BGH without a body, Opie OP.
Handlock runs 4 giants and sometimes a Ragnaros. Mage runs at most 3 giant removers right now (Polymorphs and BGH). Handlock is and probably will continue to be a meta staple, so this actually is a welcome addition to control Mage.

True, I brainfarted a bit there. But yes, the deck does need to tech very, very heavily against control. Speaking from experience, Handlock and wallet warrior are your weakest matchups. It just becomes survival until you can drop majordomo and stabilize.

-Makes cards that are good in arena to make sure people forget that arena will give random packs.
Give a man a Murloc, and he'll eat for a day.
Give him a Murloc Knight, and people will hate him.

- "Why play Sharpsword Oil over Deadly Poison?"
- "Well, you can take both of them into your deck."

I can't believe folks actually like this card.

BGH doesn't proc Flamewaker.
well i can do that with only 3 mana and a 4/2 body
this card is pretty useless

Another crap card. What Blizzard is doing?

This is good, Mages need more garbage cards to balance the class in arena.

Meta changes the moment you switch your deck.
