Well comparing it to volcano you have to take into account that this doesn't overload, plus ot does cost 2 less, also an advantage. Seems like a solid anti-aggro tool to me.

Volcano not punished by hand size and does 15 damage. so this is weaker. It wont kill any big minions
It's a really solid card for control warlock. If played on curve, you could eventually wipe the board. There is a huge difference from playing this at turn 3 and waiting for turn 5 to play volcano...
Two things that you need to keep in mind. One, it always does 1 dmg + ammount of cards you have in hand, so if you have seven cards it will deal 8 dmg. Two, spell dmg is super good in this, because it doubles the damage done.
Its not Defile, but its a very good board clear that handlock needed to be viable. Handlock with a dragon package seems like a legit deck now in the DoD meta.
Might be better than people think. Handlock turn 3 should have 7-9 cards in hand (and nothing on board), so that's probably an instant clear. The 3 mana cost curves better into your 4-drops than Hellfire (if you're going second, it can still curve into Giants).
Additionally, this card is better depending on the ratio of minions you control vs your opponent controls. If you have one large minion on the board vs 4 smaller minions, each shot will have a 4/5 shot of hitting theirs (that ratio reducing as they die). This card can also go tall if there's just a single minion on the board.
It's also going to be better than Hellfire vs divine shield or reborn. I'm looking at you Khartut or Zilliax!

...ehhh. I mean, at its absolute best it's a mini Volcano. Is that worth anything?

Ok, not great.

At its absolut best, it's a Spreading Madness that doesn't hit face.
That said, it fits the Handlock archetype, which is Control oriented, so no hitting face sois worth something.
I mean it can be ok. But why ever run this over something like hellfire?
Why u hav to be mad? is only card gaem.

This is one of those cards which can be analysed better when played in that archetype.
If you do nothing and hero power on 2, it deal between 6 and 7 damages .
I think it's really powerful in a handlock deck
3 mana non-highlander Reno
Finnaly some handlock cards. Been waiting for 2 years.
For a full hand handlock is similar to Volcano...so really good in that archetype
Might be playable, with increased hand size from warlock legendary
Very nice card for handlocks.

Easy - 5 stars warlock card.
