Playing a spell-hunter deck against a tempo mage, I fired off a Freezing Trap directly into his Counterspell. The counterspell, of course, destroyed my secret but the Emerald Spellstone in my hand still upgraded itself.
Is this what anyone would expect of this interaction? I'd think that if the secret didn't resolve that the spellstone wouldn't upgrade, but I'd apparently have thought incorrectly.
Yeah, I think that's how it works. A countered spell is still considered 'played', it just has its effects nullified. So it triggers stuff like Flamewaker and Gadgetzan Auctioneer, as well as Rogue Combos and the like.
Edit: Flamewaker doesn't cast because it says 'After'. I'm stupid and forgot. Stuff like Mana Wyrms do trigger though.
When you have a spell countered with Mana Wyrm in play, the Mana Wyrm still grows, so it's an old interaction.
I'm not sure that it works off of all spell-based triggers. I don't think Wild Pyromancer works, but I could be mistaken. Quick google: "when you cast a spell" triggers happen, but "after you cast a spell" don't happen.

Why Rogue is my favourite class:
My submission for this week's card design competition.
The Secret is still played, so it is only natural that it counts toward upgrading
