This is of course very similar to PsyGuenther's burn mage, which I am sure most people have played against numerous times on ladder. However, the addition of the Curator package changes several key matchups. The main strength of the Curator package is giving you Alextrasza more consistently no matter what matchup you're playing in.
Card Choices:
The Curator: Again, the main strength and the reason i had this idea is that you want Alextrasza in any matchup in which the game isn't decided by turn 7. Primordial drake is also an exceptional card in the current meta, and this gives you a reason to run it. Overall, I won't claim that this tech is unequivocally better, but at least the in the meta I was playing against it was more succesful for me.
Primordial Drake: One of the best cards to come out of Un'goro, it is just an insanely effective defensive tool. The fact that this deck has an excuse to run this card now that it is running Curator is insane. Is a great defensive curve after playing Curator and can singlehandedly win games against shaman and paladin, as well as provide the final defensive punch versus pirate warrior. Just a great card.
Stampeding Kodo: The best beast available to run along with the Curator. Insane against taunt warrior and if you draw it it makes a close matchup favorable. Solid against both shaman and paladin and can generally find a couple of targets in any deck. Some specifically great targets include Finja, Doomsayer, Acolyte, Mana Tide, and Flametounge.
Volcanic Potion: I have seen some Guenther Mages cut it completely and I completely disagree with that. I considered running two in the current meta, but I think the drake gives this deck a "1.5" volcanic pot feel, which is what I would run if I could. You simply aoe too much against shaman and aggro druid.
Eater of Secrets: Playing the deck today (June 18), I am considering cutting this card as the number of mages has decreased considerably. However, on my grind to legend this card was a must have. This card choice just depends on your local meta, choose yourself if you want to have it and what you want to replace it with if you are not facing enough mages. This is most definitely a tech slot depending on your personal meta.
Counter Spell: This is my personal preference and i prefer it to Ice Barrier but both are good in this deck. I find that Counterspell is great against mages, solid against shamans and warriors, and is just a more tempo oriented secret than Ice Barrier. I think that with kodo and curator this deck plays a more tempo playstyle as opposed to typical Guenther mage, which is why i chose Counterspell as opposed to Ice Barrier.
Meteor replacements?
Polymorph should work, but there's no great replacement as meteor can both be single target and aoe, as well as better value with Medivh.
I'm excited to try this deck. I've been playing many iterations of the Medivh Alexstraza control/burn mage decks with various tech choices and managed to get to rank 4 with them last season. Didn't have the energy to grind to legend.
This version looks interesting with the Kodo, Drake Curator choice. Curator draws dragon (easy Alex for win condition or Drake for clear), I can't believe that I never thought of that before. Currently climbing from rank 15 and will report back with how it goes.
I'm using -1 Flamestrike, +1 Blizzard because often you need reliable clear vs Aggro as early as possible and turn 7 is usually too late. Blizzard is a much better choice imo and the freeze can buy you time to draw the cards you need to set up a win.
I'm glad to see you've decided to give the deck a try. I personally never thought about running blizzard, but now that you mention it I recall some games, especially against paladin, where having it would have been extremely helpful. I'll have to give it a try myself, hope you have success with the deck!
Update: reached rank 11 after going 21-14 with 60% wr.

A few misplays in the first few games cost me some wins. This deck has great potential and can beat almost every meta deck. Absolutely shits on Taunt warriors and most Paladins because they cant predict your cards and you can easily draw Alex + burn to set up a win. Priest is the most annoying matchup thanks to their infinite healing and discover but that's normal for Mage decks. Will update when I reach rank 5.
Thanks for the update! Are you still running -1 Flamestrike for +1 Blizzard? Any thoughts on this whether one card is better over the other in your experiences? I just built the deck and I too am subbing in a Blizzard as I feel the same way you do about aggro. Plus in my experience, I have noticed a pretty common chance of discovering Flamestrike.
