I have been playing with out Illidan Stormrage since I don't have him and have been using RAG instead. RAG works well for late game or to finish off an opponent. Even when I have already drawn most of my daemons the extra card count helps to get a Mountain Giant.
What makes illidan necessary for this deck is his ability to be tutored by sense demons and his synergy with handlocks other cheap and efficient cards. So considering the raw power of illidan with the cards in this deck there's honestly no good replacement for him so if you don't have him either craft him because this deck is sweet or run another handlock variant. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.
Man I so want this to work. Months ago I drew a golden Illidan in my first ever pack and I have really wanted to use him. And my handlock deck that got me to level 5 last season has really struggled this season. Time for some changes.
Alas, I just played four games and lost three. Small sample, but If I can't get him out at turn 5 or 6 he's tended to be a liability. Going to let this deck mature in my mind though.
I definitely suggest playing some more games as some matches even if you're favoured you can still lose with poor draws or missplays or your opponent just having the nutts and four games is a sample size so small its honestly negligible. The deck has awful matchups against hunter aggro same as normal handlock although the voidwalkers help the matchup a tiny bit more so your win percwntage is better than standard handlock. You also have a better mirror match. Illidan I find myself using more often later than turn 6 as then you're better off usually playing giants and taunts he really shines in the later midgame and end game where if your opponent doe snt have aoe or a way to silence / kill him he'll bury them in card advantage as its essentially unleashing hounds every turn which gives you a good zoo matchup and also a way to press more damage against miracle rogue if they don't have fan of knives or blade flurry. I honestly believe the only match that gets worse is druid since you have less way to burst them down when you kill their taunts but having consistent access to jaraxxus is outstanding vs gaara ramp.
tl; dr play more matches to get a feel for the deck and I'm going to post a mulligan guide later tonight when I get off work
I'm excited to try this deck. I climbed 5 ranks with a zoo deck and was looking for something to switch it up, and this looks like it'll be a lot of fun :) I'll post feedback later as I start to climb with this deck; thanks!
I'm excited to hear from ya so definitely tell me how it goes :)
Can you give me tips on what I should be mulliganing for?
Mulligan guide has been posted, I sincerely hope it helps!
I am so glad to hear that you're also having success with the deck! I really love how this deck actually gives Illidan a purpose other than being turned in to dust to craft a better legendary.
Yes very good point I was doing the same thing but admittedly Shaman is such an uncommon matchup on the ladder that I had forgotten to mention it lol. But I'm really excited to hear that you're success has continued with the deck so far!
Looks good on paper. Im wanting to give it a shot as i've been floating between 9-10 for the last few days. I don't have illidan though. Perhaps subbing him out for the 6/6 class demon?
Unfortunately there really is no replacement for Illidan as even Pit Lord isn't good enough as taking 5 damage against aggro is just too big of a loss and he doesn't provide the combo potential either that Illidan does. :(
This deck is disgusting. Thanks man!
The only change I made was swapping a hellfire for a shadow bolt as I felt being able to hit Auctioneer and Azure was worth it over the 2nd hellfire for zoo.
Oh that's definitely a fine change to make Shadowflame (At least I'm assuming you meant Shadow Flame over Shadow Bolt) and Hellfire are pretty interchangeable cards just depends on the decks you're currently facing as Hellfire is generally better against aggro and Shadowflame is superior against control. I'm glad you're enjoying this version though, I especially love Illidan in the zoo match-up as using him + Mortal Coil / Soul Fire to clear two minions draw a card and get two 2/1's is a total blow-out a lot of the time.
Yeah I meant shadowflame sorry XD and I totally agree. I feel like the change works because you have enough tools for zoo already.
I certainly agree with you on that although some times not having to have a resource committed and being able to clear the board is certainly nice.
I'm glad you're having success with it as well :D. Granted a lot of the power comes from the fact that Handlock is just a powerful deck in the current metagame due to the lack of hunters, but I feel this version is significantly more consistent than the standard version with leeroy.
