Update: With the nerfs in effect, this deck has lost a lot of its effectiveness. If you would like to run a deck similar to this when Whispers of the Old Gods comes out, I have updated the deck with Whispers of the Old Gods cards here.
Hello, I'm Conscendo a four-time legend player on the North American servers. I recently opened Deathwing in a pack, so I decided to try it out in a taunt druid deck. It turns out that the deck I made has been performing well above my expectations. I have been having a 71% win rate from Rank 5 all the way through to the legend ranks!
Some tips:
Deathwing: The optimal time to use Deathwing is when your opponent has board control but does not have many cards in their hand. It is often wise to bait out your opponent's Big Game Hunter with Dr. Boom or Ragnaros the Firelord.
Raven Idol: This card provides flexibility to the deck and can help fix your curve. Against decks that have a lot of minions on the board like Secret Paladin and Zoo, get Swipe or Starfall. Against Freeze Mage, get Healing Touch. Against Warrior and Priest, get big minions from it.
Mulligans: Keep Innervate and Wild Growth. Keep Wrath and Living Roots against aggro.
Matchups:
Druid: 66% winrate. It is extremely important to out-tempo them. Get Mulch or Naturalize from Raven Idol to deal with their big minions efficiently while still being able to play your minions. Bait out their Keeper of the Grove with smaller taunts. Essentially, just take the board at all costs.
Hunter: 83% winrate. Just curve out and you will likely have too many taunts for them to get through.
Mage: 62% winrate. Against tempo, kill Flamewaker and save a smaller minion to play into Mirror Entity. As long as Flamewaker doesn't stay on board very long, they won't have enough damage to kill your through your taunts. Against freeze mage, get healing from Raven Idol and save your Keeper of the Grove for their Doomsayer.
Paladin: 64% winrate. Grab the board as quickly as possible while ramping up. If their board become too powerful, Deathwing can clear the board for you.
Priest: 100% winrate. Get big minions from Raven Idol and play around Lightbomb. The priest will not have enough removal for your big minions, so they will fold pretty easily.
Shaman: 73% winrate. Keep Wrath to deal with Tunnel Trogg. Innervate out your taunts. If they don't have Earth Shock you will win for sure.
Warlock: 59% winrate. I've been seeing mostly zoo. Get Swipe or Starfall from Raven Idol. As long as you assert yourself on board early, you will be able to seal the game with a big taunt. Deathwing can save you in this matchup if you get behind.
Warrior: 73% winrate. Play around Brawl and get big minions from Raven Idol. Control Warrior usually won't have enough removal to remove all your big threats. Against Patron Warrior, Deathwing can be a surprise board clear if your opponent gets a board full of Grim Patrons.
I hope you enjoy the deck and feel free to ask me any questions!
seeing a lot of negatives on this deck so i tested it out...To slow at rank 3 loses to most of whats out there...Your win rate for hunter is either subjective our just an out right lie. Played against it and played as a hunter against it...Hunter has the advantage most of the time cause curving is not always gonna happen less you ramp.
Update 36 games 50% win rate...deck is too slow and just bad. Versus warrior you have nothing to apply preasure and all your taunts get taken out by their skills, Hunter just applies a constant preasure that if you dont hit the ramp you can not win...
would you replace lore and keeper now that theyve been nerfed?
Post-nerf I would probably do something like -2 lore, -2 keeper for +1 shredder, +1 jouster +2 azure drake
It might be because I am terrible, but i had a break from this game about 3 months long, I tried this deck and at rank 23 i had about 1 win and 9 loses.
0-7 in casual *boot*
How does priest not have enough removal to beat this deck as you say? Let me see: Lightbombs, entombs, 2 cabals+shrink combos, shadow word deaths, BGH etc.
Control priest owns this deck. Dragon Priest owns this deck a little less perhaps. I should know as my main is control priest and druid is 64% favored for my deck with 89 games played.
It wins vs secret pali though for me to end positively:)
0-3 super bad against zoo, combo druid and patron
If I lack an Ancient of War, would you recommend replacing it with Defender of Argus, Ironbark Protector or Sunwalker?
I tried DoA, works fantastic. Makes taunts even bigger or adds more wall to my board.
70% on NA becomes 30% on EU
71%? HAHA. What a joke.
This deck is pretty awesome, just went 5-1 with it at rank 10!
Great deck! It's always fun to frustrate aggro, against control nobody expects ramp druid so you can make them waste their resources on the belchers, DotC, boom... and then Rag hits the table!!
It may get harder to do in higher ranks, but you always have the power incarnate for the triple surprise :P
I actually have a 66% win rate against druid. It is important to make sure you beat them in the tempo game. Bait out the Keeper of the Grove with the smaller taunts. From Raven Idol get cheap removal like Mulch or even Naturalize. Once you get your big taunts up and the druid doesn't have a big board, you have pretty much won the game. Glad you enjoy the deck!
haha
Replacement for one Ancient of War?
fibonacci has a few good control warrior decks that utilize it.
Do you tend to keep Raven Idol in your opening hand and play it turn 1, or do you mulligan it so that you have a better idea of what you want with it once you play it?
I never keep Raven Idol in my starting hand. Always look for ramp in your opening hand. However, if you do get stuck with a Raven Idol in your starting hand, it is fine because you can pick a minion that will fill out the curve.
