This deck seems a bit too gimmicky for me. Two taunts which need Dragons to work is sketchy. No aoe board clear is sketchy. Varian Wrynn doesn't make a lot of sense in a deck that has so many battle-cries. I understand this isn't a typical control deck, but no Alex/Grom combo makes it hard for this deck to finish games. The inclusion of Drakonid Crusher seems very strange as well because it is not a good card. Overall, this deck seems randomly thrown together and lacks polish.
I replaced Varian with Gromash and it's working well.
Here's my problem with this deck and why traditional control is better.
1. Being a tempo deck, if you don't draw your early cards you pretty much lose because board clear is non existent in this deck. No whirlwinds for aggro, no brawl, nothing. Just strictly dependent on drawing early cards to maintain board lead. That is ambitious to put it lightly. This deck NEEDS a brawl.
2. There are just as many aggro decks in the meta, if not more, so 2 taunts might be a little light. They are also conditional taunts and also their taunt is not proced if summond by Varian. Which brings us to our next point...
3. Varian is medicore in this deck. Since you have so many battlecry creatures you're really losing value by summoning them naked with Varian. Nef, TD, BWT, BWC, Boom, etc. Rag would probably work better.
4. The depedency on needing dragons and relying more on luck than traditional control makes this deck overall WORSE than control warrior. Also lacks finishers like Gromash.
Ways to improve this deck
-Add brawl
-Add Gromash
-Get rid of Varian
-More Taunts - Chillmaw might work instead of Crusher
-Might want to add belchers instead of 1 bash and 1 shieldslam/block
It's not a bad deck there's just no reason to play it over more traditional warrior archetypes if you're interested in winning. If you want to try something decent that works decently then this deck is fine for that.
Lifecoach, his bad decks and his completely psychotic moderators can all take a long walk off a short pier. The guy is a complete jerk and this deck is terrible. There are many other Dragon Warrior decks listed that are much more consistent and better performing.
why he subbed Alex with Dragonit Crusher?
Personally, I don't think Varian Wrynn is much suited to these dragon warrior decks, playing him and potentially landing 3 minions will result in you of course getting insane board control, but you loose a lot of you dragon synergy and it's bonuses.
I think the idea is by the point you can drop Varian, you've already got most of your Dragon synergy.
Why is he running a chow?
Since he is running two armorsmiths, alextrasza's champions, and bashs; seems like a bit too much with a Wyrn in the deck.
With the shamans and palidins running rampant, Chillmaw seems like a good replacement.
Tried this deck out a few games before and I must say I love the way it plays. I'm surprised a deck without any Brawls can perform in this kind of meta but with the addition of Shield Bash, I was usually able to deal with my opponent's threats. Even lacking a second Execute didn't feel like a big deal which I found surprising.
The hardest class to deal with is Shaman because those annoying 0/2 Taunt Totems will really slow you down and once a Flametongue Totem is protected by Taunt, you'll take too much damage before being able to stabilize. On top of that, Totem Golem can't be killed by Fiery War Axe so it's really hard to answer with this deck. This is the one matchup where Brawl is needed most but I'm not sure if it's worth putting in just to have a better matchup against Shamans.
The only questionable choice in this deck is Varian Wrynn because putting a Blackwing Technician, Twilight Guardian, or Alexstraza's Champion on the board without triggering their conditional effect feels kind of crappy but at the same time, the amount of board presence you're getting for 10 mana is more than worth the cost.
Edit: So after playing this deck some more, I dropped from Rank 4-6 only to later find out Lifecoach has basically given up on this build of the deck. I went back to playing Sjow's Anti-Aggro Control Warrior, which is in my opinion the most consistent Warrior deck, and am currently on an 8 game win streak. With 2x Slam, 2x Execute, 2x Deathlord, and 2x Brawl, it destroys the current meta and helps big time against the Shaman/Paladin matchup. Pre-TGT Dragon Warrior was never as good as Original Control and Post-TGT the situation hasn't changed much. Yeah, sometimes you can draw into the perfect curve but you also then need to rely on your opponent not drawing into theirs. This doesn't have enough removal and has too many cards that don't do anything to help you win (Blackwing Tech, Azure Drake, Alex's Champion, etc).
Varian does kinda suck since like 90% of the creatures in the deck have battlecries. However, even if you miss out on the battlecries, you're getting a 7/7, a 2/4 and let's say a 2/2 all for 10 mana, in addition to thinning out your deck. I'm still not 100% sold on him, I'm not sure if I'm just biased because he pulled gromm(I run gromm) and Ysera the last time I played him, or if he's actually a really good card. But that's what experimentation is for I guess.
Chillmaw might even work in Varian's place. It's a Dragon, you can play it a lot sooner than Varian, and it gives you the board clear this deck is missing.
chillmaw?
Anyone know the logic here? It seems like a strong card with the current paladin shaman meta.
He said Chillmaw works against you trying to establish a board. The way I see it though is you wouldn't play Chillmaw when you have a strong board so that reasoning makes no sense. He took out Alex and put in Drakonid which I personally think is terrible in comparison to Chillmaw. With all the Shamans and Paladins on ladder right now, I think Chillmaw would do much better. I'm going to run this list -Drakonid +Chillmaw and see how that works.
@LukeTheN Are you sure it's 2 armorsmith and 1 execute? People can't figure out the # of armorsmiths and executes from watching his games.
Last card is Armorsmith.
