Hi guys, I am INDIGO from Greece, I have been playing Hearthstone since beta and have been legend many times, last season i finished rank 1 legend with this Control warrior list.
Proof:
Good Matchups: Face Hunter,Freeze Mage,Patron Warrior,Oil Rogue,
Bad Matchups: Combo Druid,Midrange Paladin,Midrange Hunter,Shaman
The rest matchups are pretty close to 50-50, for example both zoo and handlock are pretty close because i use double Brawl.
Why double Brawl?
I put a second Brawl in my deck mostly for the patron warrior match up. The last days of season most of high rank legend players was playing patron warrior so i wanted to counter them.Double brawl is also really usefull against both type of warlock decks and paladin/shaman.
Mulligan:
You usually mulligan for weapons(both Fiery War Axe and Death's Bite ) and early game creatures ( Armosmith, Acolyte of Pain and Cruel Taskmaster )
Alex is really important in CW beacause you, as a CW control board, not dealing Face dmg, Alex helps you with lethal
Harrison is important versus Patron, destroying their Death's Bite before patron/berserk turn can win you game
Ysera doing well in control matchups, she gives you more options. I don't have Ysera and I replace it with Ragnaros :)
Alexstrasza is your win condition. Control warrior is all about stalling the game and gaining board control using weapons and removals (executes, shields slams, brawls) and gaining a ton of armor till u can drop ur big guys. Alexstrasza serves 2 purposes: to lower ur oponent's life to 15 and then finish him off with grommash + an activator or to rise ur life to 15 if you are dying. Ysera is a really strong card against control matchup because of the card advantage she provides and all the dream cards are super strong plus she is a big body 4/12, if you don't own her u can use Ragnaros or sneeds old shredder or kelthuzad. Harrison is a tech card, he is used when u face a lot of decks with weapons like warrior, paladin, shaman and rogue, if you face a lot of decks that use spells then loathed is a good choice. Big game hunter is included because dr. Boom is everywhere so there is always a target for him, in the mirror matchup and against handlock is also very useful to kill some Giants.
That matchup vs. Patron Warrior is so satisfying when you get the second Brawl off
Deck seems to fair rather poorly against aggro pally (which I had the misfortune of queuing against 3 times in a row :/) get absolutely destroyed because I can never get any answers (the most annoying match was when a shielded mini bot was kings'ed up to a 6/6, couldn't BGH, drew no executes and he never played any more than 3 minions, so my brawl ended up killing a 1/1 and 2/1, I was also pummeled too often to get the armor to shield slam it).
Ysera is in there for tempo. If you've gained control of the board, it helps to maintain that control with its immediate draw effect into big creature cards or nice removal spells. Also, your opponent will likely target Ysera on his next turns therefore protecting your other creatures on board.
On the other side, if you've used most or all of your cards in your hand for control, then more likely you're opponent will be low on cards as well. It's also very likely his board will be cleared or just have a single minion or two. This condition makes Ysera a great card to play because your opponent will probably not have an answer to remove it and its draw effects will help you again to establish tempo.
So if you're going to replace Ysera, it needs to be a card that's a difficult creature to get rid of and has a tempo-boost effect thats either immediate and/or reoccurring. It won't be as great as Ysera because Ysera isn't a BGH or Priest target and it's one of the few cards in HS with the highest health. Here are some close substitutes though:
1. Ragnaros (Best choice IMO)
2. Nefarian
3. Chromaggus
4. Baron Geddon
6. Hogger <--- only if you don't have any of the above. Terrible against patron
theres no sub the winning situation is normally alex face and next turn grom to cruel to fiery war axe
Grommash is used for several reasons in this deck: Finish opponent off with Taskmaster or Death's Bite deathrattle combo after playing Alex the turn before; creature removal with nice buff effect when all other removal is gone; and just be late game damage when resources have been exhausted.
It's basically the card that "seals the deal" and wins the game for control warrior. The point of control is you're spending more resources staying alive and maintaining board control. For Warrior, that also means less minions and most of the ones you do have are going to be played on turn 5 or higher. That's why Warrior doesn't do much damage until the late game and by then you've probably exhausted most of your cards. Grommash helps you not to run out of steam to where you can't kill your opponent before he either catches back up or you die to fatigue. That's why Alex and Ysera are in this deck because they're meant to help you win the end game rather than dying a slow death.
To replace Grommash, the card needs to either offer good, immediate damage and/or apply heavy pressure to help finish the game.
I think Ragnaros would be the best substitute for it followed by Leeroy Jenkins because Taskmaster can still buff it.
Is there anything I can sub in for the secound brawl? Thanks!
I run two brawls but maybe an owl, lots of people use it.
im guess whirlwind or revenge or baron gheddon
Second brawl was added recently to many control warriors because of the meta of aggro pally, demonlock, and patron. If you're not facing a lot of aggro, I'd suggest swapping out a Brawl with a Piloted Shredder because it can really help establish better board control early on against other midrange/control decks or Ironbeak Owl for silence.
I personally prefer Piloted because of Brawl and that Owl doesn't benefit this deck that much compared to others.
If you're going against lots of aggro, I'd throw in a whirlwind. Even if you aren't facing aggro, it can be used to enable Execute or finish off a pesky minion or two.
I guess it only will help you a little against paladin, with this lack of 1 mana removels also BGH, I don't think that silence is much needed in this deck. But if you feel you need it, cut off 1 [card]Cruel Taskmaster[/card] / Shield Block / Armorsmith and add 1 Ironbeak Owl
Owl fits better into decks that need it for tempo or have a hard time removing a strong minion so mostly aggro and midrange decks like Paladin. You see Owl in Handlock because it silences Ancient Watcher and is good for removing things, such as a taunt or Sylvanas, which devalue your big cards like Molten Giant and Mountain Giant.
Control Warrior doesn't really need silence because it has a good amount of answers for removal, especially with double Brawl. Even if you removed a Brawl, adding an Owl wouldn't really help your deck that much. IMO, it's just too weak of a card in this deck and doesn't help you to maintain control which is the whole point.
I'm running Revenge now instead of Ysera since I run into too little slow games at rank 5. I figured the 1 mana difference is so small there is no point in taking Whirlwind, but I have yet to really use the 3 damage part. It did 3 damage once but that was just a win-more situation.
Hi , i haven´t Harrison Jones and Alexstrasza. Some replacement pls
You could play Loatheb instead of Harrison, it works the same but is aimed at non-weapon classes more. Alex is a bit the special trick of control warriors. Maybe Nefarian instead. I assume you don't have Baron Geddon since he is not often used, but he works fine too in this deck.
Harrison is used to help deal with decks such as Hunter and Paladin where you may have a hard time getting tempo against. It's just an added bonus when you're either playing mirror or Rogue but definitely not necessary against the two.
Since it's used for tempo, I'd suggest a card in that mana range too. Anything over 6 is too slow.
I suggest: Loatheb and then Antique Healbot (only if you're facing lots of aggro)
I'd go with Harrison because as you mentioned the fast meta. As I posted above here I got rid of Ysera entirely because of the fast meta.
U can play loatheb instead of harrison, better body and good vs mages and druids. Ysera can be replaced by ragnaros, he is faster but a bgh target which is bad but u also have dr boom to bait a bgh and then play raggy boy.
Tempo Mage is also a hard matchup :(
