Since 2014 I've been trying to make an effective control hunter, and I made some pretty decent control-oriented decks that I got golden hunter with. I always really liked hunter, and my playstyle is pretty controlish. I went nuts when Gahz'rilla came out, and knew he had potential. I can't even count how many times I won because the enemy left him alive on the board.
Even without him this deck works. Here are some choices I made:
- Why no Kill Command?
I don't think there is any space for it, and you don't have that many beasts. I find Arcane Shot better because it can combo with Wild Pyromancer and destroy aggro and zoo decks.
Wild Pyromancer + Hunter's Mark combo is devastating because it can kill big minions such as Dr. Boom and deal damage to all the others, making this useful in lots of situations and in all kinds of matches. Synergizes as well with Acolyte of Pain, and of course, Gahz'rilla.
- Why Bloodmage Thalnos?
Better Loot Hoarder, which has spell power for Arcane Shot and Quick Shot.
- Why Kezan Mystic?
I used Explosive Trap, but I found out that Kezan Mystic makes you instantly win against Freeze Mage and annihilate our hated brothers, Face Hunters. Explosive Trap proved itself ineffective in many situations due to the enemy be playing around it.
Mulligan
Mulligan hard for 1,2 drops in aggro matchups, and if you already have it, keep 3 drops. Against hunters and mages always keep Kezan Mystic.
In other matches, mulligan for 1,2,3 drops. If you already have a 2 or 3 drop, you can keep 4 drops.

I hope you guys like it, and any question about replacement of cards, comment.
EDIT: This deck is better against control, but you can do anti-aggro approaches:
x2 Zombie Chow instead of x2 Animal Companion
x2 Sen'jin Shieldmasta instead of x2 Piloted Shredder
hunters are not for control decks, sorry. at least for now
I think Blizzard should really buff this kind of hunter, but for now we have to use what we have in the best way possible :)
I agree. I have always loved Hunter, and tried out every control Hunter deck I saw, and some were pretty sucessful, but it needs help. I was very disappointed when I saw the Hunter mechanic for BRM wanted you to dump your hand.
To people who claim Hunters should not be controlly: the only reason why Control Hunter is not a thing in the meta is because not many cards support it. The hero power is NOT useless. It is used as a source of damage throughout the game so you can use less win conditions and more removal.
Anyone can get a 74% winrate with bloody murloc pirate priest at that rank and you even put it in the title ... really mate?
haha are you serious?
Its funny how people, in the middle of the season, when there aren't many good players left in the lower ranks, post 74% WINRATE Z0MG then forget to mention that its from ranks 12 to 6, which is, let me remember you: UTTERLY, TOTALLY, RANDOMLY AND COPLETELY IRRELEVANT!!!!
It's halfway through the season and you are trying to say all good players are already legend? Please, try to troll a little better next time.
Really wanted to like this deck because I stopped playing Hunter after the nerf on Undertaker. I had a similar deck actually. But the early game here is really bad. I had the 4 possible best cards in my hand against a face hunter, including the Kezan Mystic and still lost. I feel it's missing taunts to gain back some tempo lost on the poor early game. I got 200+ ladder wins with Hunter but I would not take this on the upper ranks of ladder, loosing 3 games on Casual feels really bad ;). It's a fun deck to play though and thanks for making something with Gahz'rilla.
I tried to make it better to aggro matchups with healbot, but always feel free to make changes to the deck according to what you think. Maybe some senjins instead of Piloted Shredder.
I feel it needs a 1-drop to get some kind of early board presence. That's why I miss Undertaker because it would allow you to get into later parts of the game easily. Maybe a Zombie Chow or Leper Gnome maybe to throw off people ;)?
Look at the post now, made some changes
Just crafted Gahz'rilla last night and saw this deck on the front page haha! IT WAS DESTINY!!! There are so many combos in this deck for Gahz'rilla that if the opponent allows him to live a turn it's sooooo bad XD ! The damages! I must say I really like Ragnaros in this deck as well! Great deck had a good time playing it! Here's some gameplay :p ! ENJOY!!!
Glad you're enjoying!
this is one of the worst fucking decks ive ever played
Maybe Face Hunter is better for someone at your skill level.
Very nice! I run a very similar deck:
Gahz'rilla is truly an underrated card. You never see it, so no one knows how to deal with it (save priests).
I used to run two Acolytes, but I felt like the opponent always had 3 damage to kill it, or I would waste pyromancer combos to activate it. I also tried running Clockwork Gnomes for the extra pyro triggers, but I've found that Webspinner fills that roll of one drop+card draw pretty well. It also let's me run Kill Command again, which I've missed dearly. I'm curious about the spell damage strats though.
Overall I've just tried to smooth out the curve a bit more, 4 drops are hard to come by for hunters. Kezan Mystic def solves the hunter-mage problem.
It's great to see more than just face hunter.
Good job man!
Thanks!
This deck is really fun! You can almost see the confusion in the opponents play as they try to figure out why a face hunter would play Steamwheedle sniper.
Subbed both Steamwheedle Sniper for 2 zombie chows
