Since 2014 I've been trying to make an effective control hunter, and I made some pretty decent control-oriented decks that I got golden hunter with. I always really liked hunter, and my playstyle is pretty controlish. I went nuts when Gahz'rilla came out, and knew he had potential. I can't even count how many times I won because the enemy left him alive on the board.
Even without him this deck works. Here are some choices I made:
- Why no Kill Command?
I don't think there is any space for it, and you don't have that many beasts. I find Arcane Shot better because it can combo with Wild Pyromancer and destroy aggro and zoo decks.
Wild Pyromancer + Hunter's Mark combo is devastating because it can kill big minions such as Dr. Boom and deal damage to all the others, making this useful in lots of situations and in all kinds of matches. Synergizes as well with Acolyte of Pain, and of course, Gahz'rilla.
- Why Bloodmage Thalnos?
Better Loot Hoarder, which has spell power for Arcane Shot and Quick Shot.
- Why Kezan Mystic?
I used Explosive Trap, but I found out that Kezan Mystic makes you instantly win against Freeze Mage and annihilate our hated brothers, Face Hunters. Explosive Trap proved itself ineffective in many situations due to the enemy be playing around it.
Mulligan
Mulligan hard for 1,2 drops in aggro matchups, and if you already have it, keep 3 drops. Against hunters and mages always keep Kezan Mystic.
In other matches, mulligan for 1,2,3 drops. If you already have a 2 or 3 drop, you can keep 4 drops.

I hope you guys like it, and any question about replacement of cards, comment.
EDIT: This deck is better against control, but you can do anti-aggro approaches:
x2 Zombie Chow instead of x2 Animal Companion
x2 Sen'jin Shieldmasta instead of x2 Piloted Shredder
This deck is like a bad man ryddem, very strong, props to you sir!
Yo, Kurmagit. Been toying with this deck for about a week now and I have to give kudos for breathing some fresh life into Hunter.
I'd been hoping to get some use out of ol' Gahz'rilla but my combo-fu was off. Long story short, this is a ton of fun to throw around on the ladder. I've gone from Rank 20 to Rank 14 with it so far playing off and on. I'll have to see how the new edits work, I just noticed them now, and I'm wondering how well The Black Knight would fit seeing as how I've been hitting some annoyingly large taunts I've been having trouble dealing with when I'm low on removal, chiefly from Giant Warlock and every Druid.
Love ta hear back from ya!
I'm not going against a lot of druids, that's why I don't think it's necessary. If you are, try it, BK is one hell of a card.
Switched out 1x Piloted Shredder for The Black Knight.
I tested it out with a friend and then a few ladder matches. It throws off the curve a little, but when it comes together... It's a pretty cool thing. If you manage your removal properly and then drop BK it can swing the whole match in your favor. Just finished a match versus a Pally who lategame threw out a cheapo Molten Giant buffed with Defender of Argus and then both of his Holy Lights to try and psyche me out.
The Black Knight says "No" to that. Blew up the magmatic man and they were easy prey afterward. Really enjoying this deck with or without my tweaks though. It's still a ton of fun.
Someone is a keen bean... A very keen bean indeed.
I remember Spark used Snipe a lot in his Hunter Control Decks. What do you think of this secret here?
I used it, but I was confronting a lot of Zoos, and it sucks when it activates on the egg. And I think freezing trap is better anyways.
Thanks for the list, looks fun. I'm short Bloodmage Thalnos and Ragnaros the Firelord.
Loot Hoarder is always my preference over Kobald, but perhaps the + to SD is more important here?
And I know there's nothing that can replace Rags, but I don't have the dust to craft him, so thoughts on a replacement for him until I can? KT?
Appreciated.
Use Loot Hoarder, you already have Azure Drakes for spell damage. I dont think KT is good in this deck, I recommend +1 Azure Drake
Mate.. this deck is fu*** insane!
Awesome Deck! I'm having great success with it, in my 9 matches I've won 7. -- I don't even have Ghazrilla (Use Gurubashi Berserkerinstead)
+1 from me! Cant wait to try with ghaz one day..!
Hey! Love the deck... I just wanted to know if Mad Bomber is a viable replacement for Steamwheedle Sniper. I don't have any snipers, and I'm not sure if I want to invest the 800 dust.
Mad Scientist is better.
Thanks for replying! I love this deck, I just happened to pack Gahz'rilla right before seeing this. Honestly, this deck is a breath of fresh air for hunter, since all of the hunter decks lately have just been face hunter. I'm looking forward to trying this deck!
Hello. This video games with Russian commentary Midrange Hunter 2 top EU:
I just jammed arenas for a day to get Gahz'rilla to make the deck. I'm like 10 games in and it's been a blast to play! Hunter is my least favorite class bc of how aggro the class is but this deck can actually compete on resources with other controlling decks long enough to finish them! It still feels like a 'big' aggro deck but it's been working well. My only change has been -1 wheedle +1 unleash. Now I'll be able to happily finish my goal of all classes above 50 by the end of the season! Thank you for posting this list!
Hey! How long did it take for you to reach golden with this deck?
This deck is new, I reached golden mostly with a Baron Rivendare hunter last year.
Last YEAR? o.O
