Just hit legend with this tempo/small spell mage deck! It has strong matchups vs Pala and Rogue while also being able to defeat druids. I feel like this deck is reasonably easy to pick up, while still offering a lot of interesting decision making!
I know winrates with very small sample sizes are a bait, but this deck feels solid against the ladder meta right now, so i wanted to share it with you guys! (sry for the clickbait)
Mulligan tips & gameplan: (will add more details if you guys are interested)
- Hard mulligan for Lab Partner and Primordial Studies, keep Cram Session if you have either of them.
- Keep Firebrand versus Pala (dont let them stick minions to the board), Druid (kills their 5/4 stealth) and Aggro Decks
- Picking up Counterspell from Magic Trick will often save your live against Druid.
- Don't make the mistake and be too greedy for value in matchups that are not value oriented! Sometimes a Sorcerer's Apprentice or Evocation for only 2 cards can pay off immensely - prioritize your curve and mana usage!
- Regarding Primordial Studies: most of the time you'll want to pick the cheapest options - Lab Partner or Astromancer Solarian to fill your mana curve and empower your small spells. Don't get too greedy on value in tempo matchups!
When in doubt remember GM Zalae's words: "tempo good"!
Depending on what decks you are facing, it might be a good idea to put in a Frostbolt (this card is good vs Weapon Aggro) or Mirror Image instead of Violet Spellwing (this card is good vs Rogue). Brain Freeze is also a bit flexible, in some matchups a replacement might be stronger.
A lot of players are starting to run Cobalt Spellkin in these kinds of tempo mage decks. In some matchups this is probably stronger than Jandice Barov.
For card substitutions also check out the comments!
Edit: I have had better results vs faster decks after subbing in Wandmaker.
You can comment or dm me, if you want more tips or care to see some replays :)
if you enjoy the decklist, please upvote!
while i feel like Ras Frostwhisper is very important for quite a few matchups, and overall a very versatile and strong card, Evocation definitly is one of the best cards in this deck overall, and needed in almost every game. so i would prioritize Evo!
Thanks mate! What should i sub Ras for?
it really depends on your matchups! I don't think there is a proper replacement for it, that does the same job, so replace it with something different that complements the deck's game plan. in the guide and comments i already talked about some replacements that work well for certain matchups :)
you will probably have to try a few of those suggestions until you find out which card feels best against your local ladder meta - let us know what worked for you!
Zero hunters....fascinating
hunter is too fast for this deck maybe that's why. or it was edited out.
i just guessed there are not a lot of hunters on ladder right now. in the last week i did not face a lot of them either - but meta may vary based on rank/mmr/time of day, so probably just lucky i didnt face this matchup. i did not edit the stats in any way
Hey, congrats on legend! I just hit legend today with a very similar deck. It's great.
My biggest issue during the climb was all the weapon damage that seems to be present in a lot of the top decks. I flexed in two Frostbolts and found it saved my face a few times.
I actually raced a face hunter to the win with 1 HP left while he was frozen holding his weapon and an empty hand. I felt very lucky. Would recommend.
It's very tempting to tech in weapon removal, but I feel like the spell to face and freeze fits better with the overall game plan here.
thanks for your feedback! i agree, that Frostbolt is very effective versus weapon decks, picking it up from Magic Trick or one of the spell generators in the deck saved me a few times! I added your suggestion to the deck guide.
Any replacement for https://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/151348-chenvaala ?
Azure Explorer
Chenvaala acts as a powerful value generator, and also an early threat. If you replace it the deck would definitely play a bit differently, but Conjurer's Calling (use it on your giants) should do the trick as a replacement that makes sense - in some matchups this is weaker, in others it might even be stronger.
If somone has the choice to cut either Chenvaala or Jandice Barov I would cut Barov, Chenvaala feels stronger and more important.
Azure Explorer is not a tempo card, and does not fit this deck, in my opinion. If you want that card in a certain matchup for value generation or the spell damage, it is a good pick from Primordial Studies, but it is way to slow as a part of the main deck.
I tried both and i got good results with both. Azure Explorer is not a tempo card, sure. But the +2 Spelldamage AND find a dragon is really huge. So i think the deck works with both options very good.
Thanks , i have played without this card and to be honest i have now 68% so its great ;)
I have replaced this card by The Amazing Reno
biggest chalange for me -> Face Huntard
What do you think about Animated Avalanche?
It plays well here because you're likely to have other elementals at hand. Also has synergy with Conjurer's Calling since it's a (7).
'Sorcerer Apprentice -> Evocation or small spells -> Mana Cyclone -> (next turn) Mana Giant or Animated Avalanche -> (same turn if your SA survived) Conjurer's Calling' has been the win condition for me lately.
i have never considered this, tbh, because it feels like it would not fit a fast paced tempo deck. a 7 mana minion without rush or an immediate effect on bord state seems extremely slow to me. as this is a tempo deck you'd usually want to play very proactive. would be interesting to know: in which matchups did this card help you? priest? also how many times did drawing this loose you the game? (=mulligan, drawn, played winrates)
most games you win end after ~8-9 turns anyways. while it is always depending on your matchups, i feel like weakening your good (=fast) matchups for some late game value would hurt your overall strategy more often than not.
but if it feels strong for your matchups - go for it! i am by no means an expert, and in some situations even a strange pick might turn out to be a great choice.
