Hello everyone!
This is my take on Quest warlock in Scholomance Academy with the integration of someSoul Fragment cards to ramp up the speed of the quest completion, as well as add some more healing to the deck.
I would like to highlight my friend Kadakk, who took the time to make a gameplay video for you guys, please check out his channel and subscribe!
Why Soul Fragments?
The Fragment package has extreme synergy, as well as nysergy (The English opposite of synergy) with the Quest. Shuffling additional cards that when drawn, draw you another card counts as 2 cards for the quest, reducing the reliance onPlot Twist to finish the quest as quickly as possible. However, after the quest is completed the fragments can be quite annoying as it is possible to draw them with your upgraded hero power, causing the next card you draw to not be discounted. This package basically increases your survability against faster decks but hinders your combo consistency against control decks. Because the Fragments will be essentially seen as a weakerAranasi Broodmother when drawn, I decided to add two Void Drinker to the deck instead of the traditional Abyssal Summoner. This change was made mainly because of the mana flexibility the card offers for usually the same effect.
I do expect to see a lot more aggressive and midrange decks this upcoming expansion and have really stacked the deck with removals! The new cardSchool Spirits is going to be especially good against Demonhunters, because of the prevalence of 2 health minions.Soul Shear is going to be very effective at dealing with those 3 health minions in the meta likeBonechewer Brawler andFrozen Shadoweaver. AndDark Skies is just Dark skies...nuff said.
Since you do not want to be drawing yourSoul Fragment(s) after quest completion, I have addedLorekeeper Polkelt to the deck as a very powerful tool to shuffle your highest cost cards to the top of the deck and hero power right after to guarantee aMalygos,Sathrovarr, orAlexstrasza for zero mana!!
The differentiating factor of this deck is when you have 3 9 cost cards so your upgraded hero power will discount 2 of those cards to 0 mana. Meaning you can playMalygos plusSathrovarr for 9 mana for plus 10 spell damage and just murder the opponent. Before I see comments of “your burn goes to the bottom” theSathrovarr play means you shuffle aMalygos into your deck, this breaking theLorekeeper Polkelt ordering of the cards!!
Card replacements:
- Spirit Jailercan be easily swapped out forMo'arg Artificer for the extra punch with your early game aoe orNether Breath healing. I omitted the card because with the inclusion of soul fragments, it isn’t really mandatory.
- Keli'dan the Breaker is a really strong card in any Plot Twist deck so it’s a hard one to replace. However, the new Brittlebone Destroyer works similar to playing Kelidan for spot removal.
- The 2 9 cost dragons are mandatory and the core of this deck. If you are missing these, I would suggest heading over to my Midrange DemonLock guide!

Any replacement ideas for Lorekeeper Polkelt?
Lorekeeper Polkelt is what drives the consistency of this deck drawing 0 cost win-conditions. Without this card, the soul fragments aren’t worth it.
Hey guys,
so I found out that I actually have Lorekeeper so I went to try the deck and to be honest I am surprised that it is not played more from other players considering that you can just tap into your highest cost card with the mentioned lorekeeper. If you lookin for a video with commentary you can check it out bellow
hope you can enjoy it :)
I've changed 2x Spirit Jailer for 2x Mo'arg Artificer and it goes way much better now
Yeah that's a solid swap tbh. Just have the jailers for board presence but I can see both working. I'll try it with moargs tho but you still get your voidrinkers buffed consistently?
Lorekeeper Polkelt is totally useless because if you use any shuffle card (fragments) your WHOLE deck gets reshuffled I was at 10 Mana.
Had 10 mana and in hand 0 mana malygos, 0 mana soulfire and 1 mana soulfire next draw would be Alexstrasza (cause Sathrovarr was already in hand) but had to use School Spirits to stay always. Drew Plot Twist and lost
Normally it would be a win but those fragment cards fuck up your whole deck.
One game extrapolation. It’s pretty obvious that anything new reshuffles the deck. That’s actually a positive as you don’t have to draw your whole deck for your burn. You have to time the polkelt well to get the 3 cards...
ALSO TAP FIRST!!!!!
Stupid question, but I do not have malygos, can I replace him or will this deck be unusable without him
Malygos is too unique of a card to be replaced. Without him you won't do enough burn damage
Well it is a deck that revolves around Malygos plus burn spells. Perhaps you can make a quest control warlock list but not sure what win-conditions would be available.
Maly Quest Lock is currently one of my favorite archetypes and I've played several different builds from the slower The Dark Portal builds to the crazy 2 Hellfire 2 Rain of Fire burn everything to the ground builds. I've been attempting to implement the Soul Fragment cards as well, because on paper they seem great. Added healing and faster quest completion feel like a win win. There is a major issue though. The deck revolves around getting your combo off as quickly and efficiently as possible as it's really the only win condition, and the Soul Fragments often end up clogging the deck in the late game and making your new hero power useless. I think there might end up being a magic number here for soul fragment generating cards but I'm finding that 2 copies of all 3 is too many. I'd strongly consider dropping both Spirit Jailer as I feel it ends up being a garbage card that does more harm than good(espeically if you pull it with Sense Demons in the mid/late game). Dragon synergy is also tricky in this deck type. Often times when you do have it, It's a bad thing as you have a full 9 cost dragon in your hand. I've had some luck with Crimson Hothead, there are enough cheap spells to play that his spellburst is pretty easy to trigger and it adds some much needed dragon synergy.
Your point is valid, can cut the jailers for sure. I’ve just been having success with the current list and not planning to change something that isn’t broken!
I have Lorekeeper politely for this very reason, I’m guaranteed To get one of sathrovarr Alex or maly for 0 unless you drew and plot twisted into the worst hand possible.
If it gets clunky I’ll play around with some adjustments for sure.
I'v had some luck with Sphere of Sapience bottom decking shards in the late game as well. It also lets you bottom deck those 9 cost guys until you get your quest done and draw Polkelt.
Sphere can definitely work but it feels pretty bad if you don’t play it by turn 5 I reckon. But something I will be trying out for sure.
It's actually really useful late game. It prevents you from drawing your 9 cost guys at the start of the turn at no discount. Only downside is that you'll need Polkelt to retrieve them or burn through your full deck. I'm always a bit hesitant to do this with Maly, but I've won some game bottom decking my other big guys only to get to a 0 cost Maly with the HP. I think Sphere runs most ideally in a very low minion count deck with The Dark Portal. Like 6 or 7 minions tops 2 of which would be Polkelt and Jepetto. This would maximize your chances of drawing the minions you needed as well as being to retrieve your bottom decked guys. Running with so few minions is pretty hazardous though, although there are probably enough board clearing spells in the current meta to pull it off.
Tried cutting BothSpirit Jailer for one Mo'arg Artificer and Sphere of Sapience.
It works quite well actually, appreciate the advice!
This deck is so much fun, and I'm having success with it so far. Even with a noobie misplay I have still managed to win almost all games against pesky demon hunters who blow their load too early, and divvy Galakrond priests alike. Thanks for it, I decided to make it my "new expansion" deck and I'm not regretting it!
Thanks for the feedback, good stuff!!
