I don't pay for it with cash, but I have purchased packs with my reward track coins (I gave up on Standard a long time ago). I guess they are still decreasing the number of coins in the world, but I honestly don't think they give it that much thought if there are no dollar signs attached.
My understanding is this.
Blizz has to decide if to maintain his promises and to create something to use the surplus of coins, therefore allowing players to use a universal currency. Universal currency, with the surplus available in the game, will mean a drastic reduction in in-game sales for mercenaries.
Blizzard, therefore, decided to screw up all customers and its promises in order to hope to continue the in-game sales.
Anyway, players in mercenaries are constantly decreasing so much that it is questionable when Blizz will practically continue to do in-game sales for mercenaries.
When the situation will be so desperate Blizz probably will address the issue with a universal currency. At this point, anyway, people would be so angry that very few of them will be back in the game.
In conclusion, Blizz screwed his customers, people will remember. The announcement of the new mercenaries, without an explanation on how to fix past problems, was the final nail in the coffin for this mode.
I agree, but I also think they have just given up on it like many streamers. They'll take the engagement time and any trickle of money that comes in from it, but as soon as the first month of numbers came in, I think they flat decided to have it just be something else people can do since the money return on launch didn't meet projections. Now there's so much negativity and probably so little play that they are just keeping things active and have zero plans to do anything but the occasional merc release to try and grab a little extra cash from whales.
I just can't see how they don't realize that if they gave the mode some energy they would increase engagement exponentially.
